Learning Styles Summary Model
The following learning styles summary was well written. If you want maximum credit on your summary, it should be as comprehensive as this one. Please use this model to guide your writing of an acceptable summary for the learning styles assignment. A good summary should flow smoothly and be written in essay form, not outlined. There should be no spelling errors. This is accomplished in two ways: using a spell checker and proof-reading for proper word usage.
Summary
Learning styles vary from person to person. I have always been a good student, so I never questioned which learning style suited me best. Though after taking the Learning Style Test, I discovered that the area in which I scored the most points was the collaborative section. The results told me that I work best in small group discussions and students designed aspects of courses. After really thinking about it, this categorization is very accurate. In large lecture settings, I find myself uninterested and inattentive to what my professor is saying. Large lecture classes have also been the classes that I‚ve had the largest problem attending regularly. With hundreds of students in one room and a professor who doesn‚t know you from the next student, a lot of room is left for slacking.
Classes where I can work in a small group on projects or partake in smaller scale class discussions have proved to be beneficial for me. When working with other students, I am able to openly discuss any idea or hesitation I have. I can bring to the table any questions I have without being intimidated. A group setting also allows for people to play off of each other's strengths. One person may be strong where another is weak, and they are able to balance each other's talents, creating an evenly composed group. The results found that those who prefer collaborative learning styles are popular in today's business world. This statement has already proved true to me.
I am currently participating in a summer internship where all of the interns must work in a team to complete common goals. I do not prefer to be in large groups when I am initially learning something, though I do like to discuss the new material once I've been able to look at myself. The area that I scored second highest was in the participant section. I attend class regularly and I am motivated by whatever the instructor has asked of their students. By frequently attending class, I can stay on top of my workload and not fall behind. A regular size lecture where the professor encourages discussion is ideal. Getting to know a professor through discussion is key, so I can better understand his or her point of view. The learning style that is least suitable for me is the avoidant style.
This style is characterized irregular class attendance, uninterest in class material, as well as a tendency to avoid being called on in class. While these behaviors are not typical of myself, I admit to occasionally missing a class here or there and preferring not to participate from time to time. Some days I just don't feel like being social in a classroom atmosphere and prefer to keep to myself. I think that is typical of all college students, it's human nature. I also did not score very high in the competitive learning style section. While doing well is important to me, beating out other students is not. I try my best in my classes and how that measures up against other students is irrelevant. I like to know how my test scores compare to my classmates so I can see if my inconsistencies or accolades are common.
Understanding my learning style will help me to find classes and environments in which I can excel. Although there are times when as a student I am required to take a class that doesn‚t provide the most favorable settings for my learning style, I now know that if given the opportunity, I will choose the classes that offer the learning style that is best for me.
