Welcome to distance education at Cuesta College!  This is your welcome letter for Spring 2009, CAOA 250, CRN# 30932.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of important details you will need to know prior to the commencement of the Spring 2010 semester and the commencement of this online class.  Please read this letter carefully!

My name is Virginia Findley.  I will be your instructor of record for this online class—Advanced Word Processing – Microsoft Word 2007.  You will be contacted prior to the start of this class (Spring 2009 semester), at which time I will submit to you more information about accessing the Blackboard web site  http://blackboard.cuesta.edu

This course is being taught using Blackboard, a web-based tool to facilitate teaching online classes.

Class Requirements:

You will need the following:

Ø  An e-mail account to access the World Wide Web.

Ø  Microsoft Word 2007

Ø  A textbook—Advanced Microsoft Word:  2007/Desktop Publishing, Signature Series, by Joanne Arford, ISBN 978-0-76383-118-9

This textbook:

·         can be purchased at the Cuesta College bookstore—either the San Luis Obispo or North County Campus;

·         can be purchased online at the Cuesta College bookstore, http://bookstore.cuesta.edu/

·         is  required;

Software program – Office 2007 OR Word 2007.  You must have the software installed on your computer before you begin this course.

Computer Requirements:

Ø      Minimum Specifications:

·           Windows 2000, XP, or higher

·           Pentium III or better with at least 256 MB of RAM, 1 GB of free disk space

·           Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape 4.0—JavaScript and Cookies must be enabled

·           An email account

·           A reliable Internet connection

Netscape, Firefox, or the Internet Explorer Web browser can be downloaded to your computer at no cost.

Hotmail Users:  Your mailbox may not be set to accept “group” emails. In order to be successful in an online course, you must have reliable and available technology for email communications.  Hotmail does not always fulfill this requirement.  Yahoo and G-mail are free email providers and work well with online learning.

If you are using a web access email account or an account with high spam settings, it is likely that you might not receive some initial emails that detail important class information. My suggestion is to obtain a new email account with yahoo or gmail. The majority of email correspondence during the semester will be within WebCT.

Add my name and email address to your contact list to ensure that my emails are not blocked, and you are able to continue in the class without missed deadlines or being dropped.

Course Registration:

After your browser is updated, the next step is to enroll in this course.  The log in for Blackboard is:  URL:  http://blackboard.cuesta.edu

You will not be able to register in Blackboard until you get an email from your instructor saying that the class names have been uploaded. Please wait for this email. Note:  You should have received your Cuesta College email address. If you have not received this email address, please contact the Admissions Office at (805) 546-3140. I will be using this email address to contact you!

There is a mandatory meeting for this class:

Saturday, January 23, 2010 from 10:30 am-Noon on the San Luis Obispo
campus in Room 3413
of the High Tech Building (second floor).

Assignments & Tests:

The assignment sheet posted on the Blackboard website will have due dates.  All assignments are due no later than 11:30 p.m. on this date.  It is strongly suggested that all assignments are completed several days in advance before the due date.

Late assignments will be accepted only one week after due date and will be penalized 20% off total points possible. After the one week late date, no assignments will be accepted.  Assignments will not be accepted after a Unit test or the final exam.

All tests will be submitted on the date posted.  Make-up tests are not allowed—no exceptions.  To avoid calendaring problems, it is suggested that you mark your calendar for all assignment due dates, tests, and final date at the beginning of the semester.

A portfolio containing designated work you created will be due at the end of the semester and will take the place of a final exam. More information with details regarding this portfolio will be given at a later time.

As soon as your class registration is completed, send your instructor your current name and email address.  This information is important and is kept on file.

The course syllabus and assignment sheet will detail the schedule for all homework assignments and tests.  This will be available when you access the Blackboard site on or before the beginning of Fall 2008 semester.

Office Hours:

My office hours are by appointment.  Email is the fastest and easiest method to contact me.  My email address is:  vfindley@cuesta.edu

I will contact all students prior to the start of the class.

If you have any questions prior to the first day of class, please feel free to e-mail me.  I look forward to meeting and working with you.

Print this letter for future reference.
