Student Computer Setup

Using the following setup procedure, configure each student computer to boot Windows 2000 Server configured as a member server in the Contoso Windows 2000 domain.
In This Section, You Will Install and configure Windows 2000 Server on all student computers exactly as outlined.
Installing Windows 2000 Server on Student Computers
Start the Windows 2000 Server Setup program by using one of the processes outlined above in "Installing Windows 2000 Server on the Instructor Computer." The Welcome To Setup screen appears.

1. Press ENTER to continue the installation.
The Windows 2000 Licensing Agreement screen appears.
2. Select I Agree by pressing F8.
If another copy of Windows 2000 Server is detected, a Windows 2000 Server Setup screen informs you that you can repair the installation.
3. If another copy of Windows 2000 Server is detected, press ESC to continue.
A Windows 2000 Server Setup screen appears, prompting you to select an area of free space or an existing partition on which to install Windows 2000, create a partition, or delete a partition.

Warning Repartitioning the fixed disk will delete existing partitions, and any data stored on the disk will be lost.

4. If any partitions exist, delete them by pressing the D key and then following the on-screen instructions. Once the disk(s) contain only unpartitioned space, go to the next step.
5. Make sure that the unpartitioned space on Disk 0 is selected, and then press the C key.
A Windows 2000 Server Setup screen appears, showing that you've chosen to create a new partition in the unpartitioned space and informing you of the minimum size and maximum size of the partition you will create.
6. Specify the size of the partition you want to create, at least 2000 MB (2 GB), and then press ENTER to create the partition and continue.

Important After creating the partition, verify that you have at least 2 GB of unpartitioned space on some fixed disk in the computer.

A Windows 2000 Server Setup screen appears, showing the new partition as C: New <Unformatted>.
7. To create a second partition, select the unpartitioned space on Disk 0, or if there isn't at least 2 GB of available space on Disk 0, use any other fixed disk in the computer and create another partition that is at least 2000 MB
(2 GB) in size.
8. After you have created the second partition, verify that the new partition named C: New <Unformatted> is selected, and then press ENTER.
A Windows 2000 Server Setup screen appears and prompts you to select a file system for the partition.
9. Verify that the Format The Partition Using The NTFS File System option is selected, and then press ENTER.
This process will take several minutes. After the format completes, a Windows 2000 Server Setup screen appears to inform you that setup is copying files to the Windows 2000 installation folders. Eventually, a Windows 2000 Server Setup screen appears and a red status bar counts down for 15 seconds before the computer restarts.
10. If there is a floppy disk in the drive, remove it.

Important If your computer supports booting from the CD, then after Windows 2000 Setup restarts, the computer might boot from the Windows 2000 Server installation CD, causing the Windows 2000 setup process to start again from the beginning. If this happens, remove the CD, and then restart the computer.

A Windows 2000 Setup message box appears, followed by the Welcome To The Windows 2000 Server Setup Wizard page, and the installation continues when the Installing Devices page appears to inform you that Setup is detecting and installing devices on your computer. This process may take several minutes.
