*** Lab Setup Instructions *** Added instructions for students doing labs at home: Here are instructions that supercede the instructions in your lab manual. Doing this now will save you grief later, trust me. Insert CD into CD drive, close drive and reboot. The computer should boot from the CD. If it does not ask the lab attendant to check the BIOS settings. At the first screen, press enter to install At the next screen, press enter. At the next screen press the key marked F8 to accept the terms of the EULA (license). At the next screen, delete all existing partitions. You will then add these: -Drive c: 2500 megabytes -Drive d: All available space minus 1000 megabytes Unpartioned space 1000 megabytes All partitions need to be formatted with NTFS quick formatting Install Windows XP on the c: drive After this the computer will shutdown and reboot. Leave the CD in its tray but do not touch any keys durng the reboot. When the machine comes up again, you will be in graphical mode. At the Region and Language Settings dialog box, press next At the next screen, enter your student number as studentxx. I will assign you a two digit number for this purpose. It's important you use this name. For the Company name, you can use Cuesta College, or any other name, as long as you put something there. At the next screen, you will be prompted to enter the product key number from the yellow sticker on the CD jacket inside your textbook. It's easy to mis-type this number. At the next screen, the computer name must be changed from whatever it is to computerxx where xx is your instructor-assigned student number. (It's the same xx you used with your studentxx login.) An admin passord is required. ALL PASSWORDS IN THIS LAB ARE password. That's password, not PASSWORD or pAsSwOrD. That means your student login, local machine admin password, etc. At the next screen, correct the date and time as necessary. At the network settings screen, choose typical settings that automatically configure the computer. You will change this later in the course. At the next screen, choose to join the CONTOSO domain. Ask the lab tech to supply a domain name and password to authenticate; they'll know what to do. The machine will reboot. As it shuts down, remove the CD from its tray and return to its handy dandy sleeve. Allow the computer to be activated by Microsoft, but do not register. |
