Women's Health Issues - Health Education Three

Required Text: Contemporary Women's Health, Kolander, Ballard and Chandler, 3rd Edition

Focus of the Class: This course is designed to provide a broad-based exploration of health and wellness issues. Aspects of this class will focus specifically on women’s issues with emphasis on a cultural perspective of chronic disease prevention, promotion of positive body image and application of self-empowerment strategies.

TIME ZONE:  We have an east coast server, so all deadlines are stated for the east coast.  In your instructions, I state deadlines for 'our time' zone or pacific time.  ALL IS NOT LOST ----  You can change your time zone to avoid any confusion.  See the announcement board for time zone instructions.

1. Make sure you have completed the proper registration process for the course including your correct email.  If I do not receive your proper registration information, you may be dropped from the course.  If you are using a free email (Hotmail or Yahoo), make sure your account accepts my emails.  

2.  Blackboard Learning System is the host site and requires access information.  The host site address is http://cehosting.blackboard.com/.    On the first day of your scheduled course, access instructions will be sent.

3. The course is divided into four sections with requirements for each area. When a section begins, you will be reminded of your requirements through course email.   However, you are responsible for knowing all requirements and due dates.  You may work ahead at any time, but you must be aware activities and group assignments have assigned dates of participation.  In addition, periodic announcements will be posted to the course homepage.  It is recommended you access the course at least once a day for important updates.

4.  Course participation is required.  If you fail to participate, you may be dropped from the course.

5. Students are expected to comply with academic honesty standards of the college. See Cuesta College Catalog.  Students are responsible for communication using proper Netiquette.  "Netiquette" is a contraction of Network Etiquette, and it refers to the way we behave online.  If problems develop with Internet communication, I may request personal communication.


Assignments:

1. Homework – There are homework assignments for each section plus some initial assignments during the first week of class. Assignments are to be submitted using the form contained within the assignment page. Assignments must be turned in on time with late work receiving half credit and no late assignment acceptance after section has been completed.   If you have questions regarding assignments, please clarify with the instructor PRIOR to the due date.  Make sure you keep a copy of all your assignments!

2. Activity/Discussion– There will be class activity-discussions and critical writing assignment completed on an individual basis. Discussion questions will relate to material covered in the course and you will receive instructions when required.

3.  Assessment - You will have a total of four assessments with set dates and NO make-up scheduled.  Assessments are multiple choice/true-false and are completed online within a twenty-four hour time frame.  They cover material in assigned textbook reading, learning modules, discussions and class activities.  Assessment instructions are provided with the initial assignments completed during the first week of class.  Any and all assessment discussion, will take place during my scheduled office time.  Please feel free to schedule an appointment.  For security reasons, I will not send any information over the Internet.


Grading: Your grade will be based on total accumulated points with 335 possible: 90 to 100% is an A, 80 to 89% is a B, 70 to 79% is a C, 60 to 69% is a D and 59% or below is a F.  Points are based on the following:

Activity/Discussion (4 total): 80points (20 points each)
Assessments (4 total): 120 points (30 points each)
Homework (4 total) 120points (30 points each)
Initial Assignments (*Three assignments – see points below)
 *Online Orientation: 5 points
 *Personal Introduction: 5 points
 *Sample Quiz: 5 points
