Welcome to Engineering Dynamics
Hybrid Section
Note: This is the Summer 2009 welcome letter.
Updates will be posted here
6/2: Email sent to all enrolled students about temporary access to Blackboard.
6/8: Another email sent to all enrolled students about the availability of your Blackboard account
Dear Student,
This
summer will be the first time the hybrid section of Engr 251 is
offered. Some of you may be confused about what that entails.
This page is to help clear up that confusion.
First, please read the welcome page for the online section. The similarities and differences between the two sections are listed below:
Ways in which the two sections are the same
- Both sections cover the same materials and follow the same schedule.
- You will watch the lectures online on Blackboard no matter which sections you are in.
- Both sections will use the same textbook (Beer 8th or 7th ed.)
- There will be the same reading, homework and assignments.
- You may submit assignments either as a scan on Blackboard or as paper in class.
Ways in which the hybrid section is different from the online section
- There will be regular class meetings (MWTh 9:30-10:45am in 4118). These class meetings are required.
- During
class meetings, there will be quizzes and exercises at the beginning
and end of each class. In the middle, depending on the class
request, I may go over an important concept, go over a tricky problem
again, or cover new sample problems.
- The quizzes and
exercises will count for part of your grades. Online students who
attend the class meetings will receive extra credit for completing them
as well, otherwise, online students are to use those quizzes as
self-tests.
- Homework need not be turned in for the online section. For the hybrid section, they need to be submitted in class.
Ok, I've decided I want to take the hybrid section of this
course.
What do I do next?
- Register
for the class. For Summer 2009, the class is sections 50178.
- New or former students who have been absent 2
or
more semesters
will need to apply first.
- During
registration,
you will be assigned a Cuesta email account. Make sure to check
this account regularly or forward emails to your regular email
account. I need to be able to contact you in the event that
Blackboard is down.
- If the section you want is full, you may add the other section and let me know within the first week that you want to change.
- Around late May/early June, I will send you an email (though your Cuesta email account) with
details on how to gain temporary access to Blackboard. Since the
summer session is very fast-paced, you are strongly encouraged to get a
head start on the course.
- By Thusday before class starts, I will send all registered students an
email (though your Cuesta email account) stating that a Blackboard
account have been created for you. If you registered for the
class in the last week, it can take a week to get this set up so you
might receive this email later. Contact me if you are registered but have not received
this email by Saturday morning.
- Your blackboard username is the same as your myCuesta username. The default password is STUDENT (in all caps).
- Log
on to your Blackboard account and complete Assignment 0 prior to the first class meeting.
- You must attend the first class meeting on June 15 or you will be dropped.
- Assignment 1 is also due at the first class meeting (or at 9am on Blackboard) as well.
