Cuesta
College Paramedic Program underway
The
Central Coast Paramedic Program (CCPP) has received approval from the
California Community College Chancellor's Office and the Local Emergency
Medical Services Agency (EMSA), just before the start of the Fall 2006
semester. The CCPP will also be applying for national EMSA approval in
2007.
The
CCPP is a collaborative project between Cuesta College and Allan Hancock
College preparing graduates to take the Paramedic National Registry
Licensure Examination leading to licensing as a California Paramedic.
After
prerequisites are completed, the Paramedic Program is three semesters in
length. Students have Clinical rotations on evenings and weekends
throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. The internship
phase begins during the final semester, and students work with local
contracted Emergency Medical Services providers.
“This
program will create new and exciting opportunities for Cuesta College
students,” said Coordinator of the Paramedics Program, Dave Melendy.
“And provide essential training for Emergency Medical Technicians in San
Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara counties.”
The
main source of funding for the Paramedic Program is the George Hoag
Family Foundation, donating $165,000 to the Nursing and Allied Health
Department in July 2006. This grant supports the establishment of the
Paramedic Program by providing two years of faculty salaries and
equipment.
