CUESTA COLLEGE HIRES NEW GEOLOGY FACULTY MEMBER
Cuesta College hires new geology faculty member, Dr. Debra Stakes.
Stakes will begin teaching fall semester and will be teaching classes in
Oceanography and Marine Geology.
Stakes’ undergraduate degrees are in Chemistry and Geology from Rice
University in Houston Texas, and earned a PhD in Oceanography from
Oregon State University in Corvallis. She then went to work for the
National Science Foundation as a Program Associate and a professor at
the University of South Carolina, teaching introductory courses in
Oceanography and Geology and leading field trips both to the Appalachian
Mountains and the salt marshes of the Baruch Marine Center.
Currently Stakes is involved in geological exploration using remotely
operated vehicles at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and
teaching part-time at Monterey Peninsula College and CSU Monterey Bay.
“I am very excited about working with the students at Cuesta. Earth
Science is a key to deeper appreciation of the natural world” said
Stakes. “I work to de-mystify the underlying science surrounding
critical environmental issues that will enable our students to have a
real voice in finding appropriate solutions.”
Stakes decide to accept the a faculty position at Cuesta College because
the Geology Department shares her view that students need to get out in
the field and see geology in its natural habitat.
For more information on Debra Stakes or the Geology Department please
contact Anna Davies (805)-546-3125.
