CUESTA COLLEGE
PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS
“A FALL FESTIVAL OF CHOIRS” ON OCTOBER 23
Attention music lovers: four Cuesta College vocal ensembles will team up
to perform classical and jazz vocal music in one evening, at “A Fall
Festival of Choirs” scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October
23. The performance is under the direction of Cuesta music instructor
John Knutson, and plays at the Cuesta College San Luis Obispo Campus
Conference Center.
The Festival of Choirs will feature three of the student
vocal ensembles at Cuesta College – the Chamber Singers, the Concert
Choir, and the vocal jazz ensemble Vocé. A special addition this year
will be a guest appearance of the new Cuesta North County Choir under
the direction of Cassandra Tarantino.
The evening promises to be filled with
quality performances. Vocé has consistently been one of the most renowned
vocal jazz groups in the state for the last 20 years. The group was
among six in the world to be invited to perform at the International
Association for Jazz Education convention in Toronto in 2003; was among
three in the U.S. to be invited to the American Choral Directors
Association National Convention in February 2005; and was a featured
performer at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in July 2005.
Vocé
members are Molly Beaumont and Brad Rounds of Atascadero; Kimmi Graton
and Heidi Swangler of Templeton; Chris Lane of San Luis Obispo; Byron
Jones of Pittsburg, CA; Jessica Tillman of Modesto; and John Saylor of
Valencia.
The Cuesta
Chamber Singers have consistently performed music at the highest level.
The group won numerous honors and awards in past years, and is fresh off
their tour of Europe this past July. “They did nine performances in 15
days, which I now know is too much work!” said Cuesta Music Instructor
and director John Knutson. “But the fact that seven of those nine
concerts resulted in standing ovations made it all worth while!”
The
Chambers Singers will be performing works from around the world—Spain,
Africa, Latin America, plus an eclectic mix of pieces from the
Renaissance through the 21st century.
Tickets for
the “Fall Festival of Choirs” are $10 for adults, $8 for students,
seniors and children under 12. For more information, contact Cuesta
College Performing Arts at 546-3195.
