LA GUITARRA CALIFORNIA SCHEDULED AT
CUESTA COLLEGE SEPTEMBER 23, 24 AND 25

Central Coast guitar lovers should mark their calendars. La Guitarra California, a three-day classical guitar festival, will be held at the Cuesta College San Luis Obispo Campus Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 23, 24 and 25. A complete list of times for festival events can be found online at www.laguitarracalifornia.com.

The festival is sponsored by Cuesta College Community Programs and presented by the Cuesta Guitar Circle, and will feature twenty renowned artists performing in sixteen separate events.  In addition to the concerts there will be four master classes; numerous outstanding luthiers (guitar builders) exhibiting their guitars; a guitar market place; and a display of the famous Forderer Collection of Rare and Historic Guitars.

Artists scheduled for the internationally known festival include the brilliant headlining guitarist Fabio Zanon from Brazil (via England); the world renowned Roland Dyens from France; the fantastic Kuropaczewski-Bryla Duo (guitar and violin) from Poland; Cem Duruoz from Turkey pairing with Coco Trivisonno from Argentina on the bandoneon playing tangos; the amazing young guitarist Elena Papandreou from Greece; and the brilliant Adam Del Monte from Spain with his Jazz Flamenco Quartet.

American artists include the sensational guitarist and composer Andrew York of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet; the Venere Lute Quartet; John Schneider, a specialist in alternative tunings and contemporary guitar music; James Edwards of Cambria who will premier new works by local composers; and David Doty, who will lecture on “Just Intonation” of the guitar.

The Friday night opening concert is a double feature that includes James Edwards with three of his own works, and also featuring works by local composers Craig Russell, Garry Eister and the previous festival director, the late Reed Gilchrist. Following this performance will be Adam Del Monte and his Flamenco/Jazz Quartet with flamenco singer Jesus Montoya.

Playing on the stage in the Student Center courtyard during lunch and dinner breaks will be the Venere Lute Quartet in an open rehearsal, the Devine Guitar Quartet and local guitarist Jeff Peters.

This year's festival will be the fourth La Guitarra California. The event has been presented every other year at Cuesta College, beginning in 1999.  It has become a world-class event during this time period, considered one of the finest classical guitar festivals in the United States.  For tickets and information call Cuesta Community Programs at 546-3968.
