"Phantasmagoria"

CUESTA COLLEGE ART GALLERY PRESENTS “PHANTASMAGORIA” ON SEPTEMBER 23

Tired of being told what to think? Come to your own conclusions at Doug Highland’s “Phantasmagoria” exhibition, opening Friday, September 23, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. in the Cuesta College San Luis Obispo Campus Art Gallery.  Highland, a Full-time Photography and Art Instructor at Cuesta, will be present to discuss his large photo-murals showing grisly masqueraders, stuffed deer, and a living statue of liberty. Highland will conduct a enactment of processes used for his photographic mural work at 7:30 p.m. that same evening.

In Highland’s exhibition, which runs through November 10th, “nostalgia and contemporary concerns meet to question what is fact and what is fiction in our present time,” he said. His work combines traditional, non-silver, and digital photographic processes. While immersed in digital technology, he views it with an artist’s detachment. “My concerns are for people’s disconnection within our everyday world with its ever-increasing pace and reliance on technology. I feel that this disconnect is at the root of social and ecological problems.”

Highland, whose roots include both fine art and commercial photography, has taught at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, the University of Arizona, Lake Tahoe Community College and Alan Hancock College. His work has been exhibited at many venues throughout the Southwest and California, including the Center for Creative Photography and the University of Arizona Museum of Art in Tucson.

This event is free and open to the public. Cuesta College Art gallery programs are generously supported by a grant from the Promotional Coordinating Committee of the City of San Luis Obispo. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  For further information call the Gallery at 805-546-3202.
