Hollister Bridge remains on schedule
Bridge Photo Gallery Update 09-21-09
The Hollister Creek bridge project more closely resembled a bridge during the month of August.
Early in the month, Souza Construction crews completed the installation of falseworks, the support structure for the span over Chorro Creek. The project, which began in June, is located on the southeastern portion of the Cuesta College campus.
Next, workers began installing plywood forms that would form the base, sides and concrete girders of the bridge. As they worked, subcontractors installed tons of steel rebar.
By late in the month, the largest concrete pour of the project occurred.
And finally, during a hot spell the last week of August, when the mercury hit 108 degrees one day, Souza crews pulled out the concrete forms that created the girders and repurposed them to form the deck of the roadway.
The $2 million span is expected to open to traffic in mid-December. The project is jointly funded by the Federal Highway Bridge Replacement Fund and state Office of Emergency Services; no local monies were required.
While subcontractors complete specialty assignments on the project, much of the work is done by fewer than a dozen Souza Construction workers.
That crew includes four current or former Cuesta students: Weston Arthurs, 22; Jake Bell, 23; Sam Hanley, 20; and Stuart Souza, 21.
