Fall Wellness News

Doing right by your body does more than relieve stress – studies show that a consistent exercise program also reduces the rate of diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and a host of other modern day maladies.  The Wellness Committee wants to make the regime a snap as well -- all Cuesta employees can sign up for physical education classes and use the fitness facilities at no charge.  Whatever your fitness and/or lifestyle needs are, CC can most likely help.

Current fitness classes are:

  • Daily Lap Swim, weekdays,11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for lap swimming.
  • Adult Fitness, Tuesday/Thursday, noon to 1:30 p.m.  Lift weights and ride a stationery bike in this go-at-your-own-pace class.  Personalized training is also offered.
  • Step Training, Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.  Set to high-energy music, all levels of cardiovascular ability are encouraged to attend.

An additional offering is slated for this coming Spring:

  • Pilates for Health and Fitness, Tues/Thursday, noon to 1:30 p.m.  Once a regime for the rich and famous, the benefits of Pilates are for everyone.  Incorporating a series of mat exercises, this class develops body definition and improves strength and flexibilty.

If you’re a fitness go-getter, you’ll probably identify with Colleen Avery, this month’s Health and Wellness Employee.  A Nursing Skills Lab teacher, Avery began exercising eight years ago to prevent osteoporosis.  She began as a runner but has since expanded her repertoire to include the gym, water skiing and riding snow mobiles.  One fitness goal:  to water ski when she turns 60!  Avery’s exercise advice?  “If you only have 20 minutes, go do something!  It’s a mental and physiological break for your body.”

The committee also wants to remind Newsletter readers about its Wellness Incentive Program (WIP) – one lucky participant might win a dream luxury weekend!  To throw your hat in the ring, log your fitness hours on the wellness website – http://academic.-cuesta.edu/wellness/welform1.htm.  For every 50 hours accumulated, participants receive a ticket to the grand prize drawing and a wellness t-shirt.  The winner will be announced at the spring Step-A-Thon on April 13, 2005.
