SBC and Cuesta Join for Faster Communication

This month marks an important new partnership for Cuesta: CC has just linked with the SBC Network to provide faster Internet access between the main San Luis Obispo campus and the satellite North County facility.  The improvement also makes for faster speeds for NC students, staff and faculty overall and in addition, provides NC staff better access to administrative databases located on the SLO campus.  The new system provides network throughput of 45MB/sec (million bits per second) – a 15-fold improvement over the previous 3 MB/sec link it has replaced. 

“In laymen’s terms, it’s like going to the bank and waiting in line,” says Jay Chalfant, supervisor of PC/Network Support.  “Instead of having to wait for a teller during a busy time, a teller will always be available, no matter how heavy the traffic gets.”  With the next few months, Chalfant says the link will also allow a vastly improved set of high-bandwidth applications, such as video conferencing for both campuses.
