A Cuesta Fashion Design/Merchandising student has won a prestigious state wide award. Commercial fashion design major Deena Marie Qabazard garnered second prize in the Design Presentation Board Contest at the California Community College Fashion Symposium this past March. “When I saw Deena’s name in the contest winners, I started jumping up and down,” says FD instructor Rhonda McBride. “I was just like a proud mother. She was one of only five boards I sent down – and her project was absolutely outstanding.” Rules involved coming up with a theme-based fashion design collection, with the large poster boards needing to boast detailed, two-dimensional drawings. Qabazard titled her design “Pulp Nights,” based on the style and energy of the cult film “Pulp Fiction.” The one-day event took place in Los Angeles at the California Apparel Mart, where Qabazard’s entry was one of several hundred in that category. About 15 Cuesta students attended, which also featured on-the-spot creative T-shirt and denim contests, merchandising projects on display and a fashion show. Students also had the opportunity to meet in groups and individually with representatives from cutting edge fashion houses that included Roxy, LEI and Volcom. Cuesta students will participate in the next symposium as well, slated for March 12, 2005. For her effort, Qabazard was awarded $100.
