Art Videos Screening at North County Campus

Looking for a relaxing-but-also-educational break between classes?  Fine Arts instructor Marie Ramey might have the answer: take time out to watch a few art videos, all culled from her private collection of several hundred tapes.  Ramey instituted the weekly North County Campus series last month and will continue to offer the documentaries until the beginning of December.

Late October, November and December screenings are as follows:

October 21 - Baraka: A World Beyond Words, 104 minutes.  Baraka is defined as a visualization of the interconnectedness humans share with Planet Earth.

October 28 – Degenerate Art, 60 minutes.  This tells the story of the Nazis’ vilification of the avant-garde artist and their concurrent attack on modern culture.

November 4 – Cahokia Mounds: Ancient Metropolis, 60 minutes.  Located a stone’s throw from St. Louis, this ancient Native American metropolis was a city of art, commerce, power and wealth.  Up to 30,000 persons lived in Cahokia, with the tallest mound structure reaching an astounding ten stories.

November 11 – The Sexiest Rectangle and The Hidden Beauty of the Golden Rectangle, 30 minutes each.  Both tapes explore what at first appears to be the unlikely marriage of mathematics and art.

November 18 – The Message of the Myth, 60 minutes.  Exploring cave paintings and Native American art to the modern masters, this is from “The Power of Myth,” the popular PBS series by Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers.

December 2 – Visions in Stone: The Rock Art of the Coso Range, 60 minutes.  The largest concentration of Native American rock art in the United States – believed to be 16,000 years old – is in California’s Mojave Desert.  It is also protected by a Naval weapons testing base.  Why?

All of the videos screen Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. in N5001, with attendees allowed to eat light snacks during the programs.  The series is free and open to Cuesta students, staff and faculty.  Depending on interest, Ramey hopes to show new videos next semester.  For additional info, contact Marie Ramey at ext. 4213.
