Welcome to “Answers from ELIC,” a monthly submission of satisfying solutions to impenetrable inquiries coming from clever Cuesta computer users. Finding “Lost” FilesQ: I’ve misplaced an important file and I don’t have time to wade through the hundreds of folders on my computer. What should I do? A: Bloodhounds are great at finding lost people, but they don’t work well retrieving lost information. In lieu of a digital data-sniffing dog, I suggest employing Windows’ Search tool. When you use Search Companion, you can specify several search criteria. For example, you can hunt for files and folders by name, type, and size. You can find a file based on when you last worked on it or search for files containing specific text. 1. From the Taskbar click Start, point at Search, then click on For Files or Folders.
2. At the Search Results window type part or part of the name of the file or folder, or type a word or phrase that is contained in the file.
3. Click the Search button.
The results of your search will appear in the Search Results window.
