The Cultural Diversity and Student Equity Committee (C.D.S.E.), in partnership with Superintendent/President Marie Rosenwasser, has announced the winner of the $1,000 President’s Diversity Grant. The grant is designed to encourage faculty, staff, divisions and departments to incorporate creative ways to promote, teach, learn and plan for diversity within the college. Selected as the 2004-2005 President’s Diversity Grant winner: ® "Tolerance, Acceptance, and Health Connections to Beliefs, Values and Boundaries," submitted by Allison Merzon and M.J. Basti. Museum of Tolerance educational material incorporated into Health Education curriculum - trip to museum, reaction papers, journals, study groups and public display. The C.D.S.E. extends appreciation to all individuals who submitted a proposal in the first-ever awarding cycle of the President’s Diversity Award and encourages applicants to to seek alternate funding sources for their projects. It is the hope of the C.D.S.E. Committee that all proposals will be implemented over time, through the collaborative efforts of the college community. Here are the proposals: ® "Diversity Learning Profiles," submitted by Berta Parrish and Jeanne Greenelsh Proposal describes an on-line flex credit faculty development program designed to promote understanding and sensitivity to diverse learning styles. ® "Diversity Mural Project," submitted by Janet Florez. Funding sought to create a mural depicting diversity with the theme of performing arts, to be installed in courtyard around stage area ñ designed by professional artist with volunteer painters completing mural. ® "Many Lives, Many Voices ñ Week-long Celebration of Multi-Cultural Poetry," submitted by Regina Reyes and Margaret Hiebert. Funding sought for third annual North County Campus event that highlights guest poets, English as a Second Language student participants and Tellis winners. ® "Enriching Multicultural Resources for North County Campus Students," submitted by Ellen Jagger, Tina Lau and Douglas Pillsbury. Request for additional library holdings (books and materials) for ESL students. ® "You Deaf You?" submitted by Betsy Dunn, Emily Desfor and Kathy Robasciotti. Proposal describes incorporating members of the Deaf community in ASL classes, as paid classroom aides, to provide valuable language acquisition opportunities for Cuesta students. ® "Diversity on the Cuesta College Campus ñ an interactive experience," submitted by Kathy Peters. Funding sought to create a DVD or CD about the diversity on campus for use by students or staff ñ staff and student interviews, interactive quizzes and web resources. ® "Holocaust, Creative Impulse and Life in the 21st Century," submitted by Kevin Bontenbal.
