Computer Changes

Submitted by Computer Services

- Sean Landers has been hired as the new (and currently only) Technology Trainer/User Support for Cuesta.  In addition to helping with technology problems over the phone, he also provides group and one-on-one training.  He can be reached at ext. 3248 or slanders@cuesta.edu

- The size of Cuesta’s Internet link (‘pipe’) has been increased by more than a factor of 10. Last year you may have experienced some slow down to the Internet during prime-time. Given the increase in capacity, this occurrence should be rare.

- A new tool called LANDesk has been tested this summer that will help Computer Services help our users more efficiently. This application allows you, the user, to temporarily give Computer Services’  support staff  remote access to your computer to help diagnose technical problems and/or find solutions to software issues.  (Note: Computer Services staff cannot access your computer unless you grant permission from your desktop.)  Many PC Tech work orders can be resolved using this tool, thus using our limited resources more effectively. It also helps User Support effectively solve software issues one-on-one over the phone. So far the only downside with LANDesk is that some of the PC Techs are NOT getting the exercise that they use to!

- A new application is available under IRIS menu; posting end of semester grades. This was a pilot project that was available to all faculty to post their summer end of term grades.

The workgroup that initiated this project (members include A&R, Faculty, VPs, and Computer Services) will be evaluating the pilot and making appropriate changes.  The biggest issue was the timing of open registration for fall classes and the submission of grades by the faculty. Open registration for fall caused a huge (and unanticipated) impact on the system. This and any other issues will be discussed and appropriate changes made.

- On the web site, a new page for finding department information has been implemented.  This new page and system was developed to address some issues that existed. Our web site is always a balance between individual creativity and a “common look“ for the college. This system provides a common ëfront door’ to all department home pages. In addition, common information such as description, location (with a link to a map), hours, contact information is on this front door page. If the department has their own site/page, there is a link from this front door to it. For the departments that don’t have their own site/page, they at least have this common information available. This has been an issue for departments who didn’t have a page, yet users need to know some basic information (contact information, location).

- Cuesta email addresses are available for emeritus employees. Last year the Technology Committee proposed and Cabinet approved emeritus employee email. For more information and the request form go to the Computer Services web site.

If you have any questions on any of these, contact Janice House, Director of Computer Services, at jhouse@cuesta.edu at or at ext. 3248.
