PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:
Summer Session: The six-week summer session is sailing by! Enrollment is approximately 10% below the FTES target. Decline is seen across the curriculum, even though more classes were offered, staff made telephone calls to all students who had applied but not registered, and letters to students, advertising and community outreach were all part of the recruitment. Cabinet members have been analyzing enrollment for 2004-2005 as well as this summer and are making those adjustments they can for fall semester.
College for Kids is running on both SLO and North County Campuses and the Bridge to Success program has served more than 20 students. You are invited to the “graduation” barbecue for our Bridge students at noon on July 21 behind the SLO Campus Cafeteria.
2005-2006 Budget Signed: California legislators and the Governor made history by passing and signing a budget only 10 days into the new fiscal year! The budget contains some good news for community colleges (see the article elsewhere in this issue)—no tuition increase, some equalization funding, restoration of last year’s vetoed Partnership for Excellence (PFE) funds, growth funding, a healthy COLA for institutional needs (e.g. operations, wages and benefits, hourly). Administrative costs for STRS were not passed on to the colleges this year. The recommended final budget for the SLOCCC District will be reviewed with the Planning & Budget Committee when fall semester begins.
