Terry Reece is the 2005 Outstanding Management

Senate Employee of the Year

The definition of a true leader is someone who always puts their employees before themselves; stays on top of every project until quality results are achieved; and takes rapid, effective action in a time of crisis without guidance from above. That truly fits Terry Reece, the 2005 Outstanding Management Senate Employee of the Year.

According to his nominators, Reece’s leadership abilities and resolve have made all of the difference in times of crisis. “Terry has been tireless in his ability to jump in and help when needed,” wrote one nominator. “He backs us up when we need help, works on weekends and evenings, and shows a fine example for workers to follow.”

Terry directed the Physical Plant team when Cuesta’s San Luis Obispo Campus lost power last October during a high-powered rain storm, forcing the cancellation of many classes. Terry and his crew, wearing rubber gloves and using “hot sticks,” worked with 12,000-volt electrical wires in pouring rain and high winds, trying desperately to restore power to the San Luis Obispo Campus before more classes were cancelled. The crew eventually discovered two problem areas in the high voltage lines – a short between the 1000 and 2000 complexes and a short between the 1000 complex and Old Campus.
Terry’s professionalism is not the only thing that’s respected by his employees.

“Everyone thinks of him as a friend and someone to go to when you have special needs,” wrote another nominator. “Terry always checks with employees when they are sick or in need, including the family. He offers to work in their place if needed.”

Terry was hired in January 1996 and became Director of Maintenance, Operations and Grounds in December 2001.
