The following individuals and their proposed projects have been awarded the President’s Diversity Grant for 2005. Each project will be awarded $1,000.
Cultural Competency and Multicultural Sensitivity
submitted by Bailey Drechsler
The project proposes training by Lee Mun Wah, a nationally known diversity trainer, filmmaker, and founder of StirFry Seminars who approaches diversity training with an emphasis on the process in interpersonal dynamics, communication and community building. Participants for the training would represent campus leadership from the Board of Trustees, Cabinet, administration, managers, faculty and staff. “These participants are targeted precisely because of the role they play in developing and implementing campus policies, procedures, and pedagogy.”
Demystifying Domestic Violence –
Connection to Student Learning, Retention and Academic Success
submitted by Glenda Moscoso, Vicki Sawzak and Erin MacIntyre
The project proposes raising awareness about the scope of the problem referred to as domestic violence and understanding the issues as related to students through specialized training for faculty and staff on the SLO and North County campuses. Dr. Rosa Casarez-Levinson, Assistant Professor of Sociology at San Francisco State University will be invited to present Domestic Violence: Experiencing it, surviving it, and making a life after it with implications for students attending community colleges.
