Faculty member Mark Turner has recently returned from the once a year National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) convention, based this year in Anaheim. The NCTM’s Annual Meeting and Exposition included an opening speech by former middle school math/English teacher Erik Weihenmayer, who is one of less than 100 people to successfully reach the top of all of the Seven Summits – the highest peaks on each of the seven continents, including Mt. Everest. (Weihenmayer’s accomplishments are made even more extraordinary by the fact that he lost his sight at 13 years old. Weihenmayer is also the author of Top of the World: A Blind Man’s Journey to Climb Farther Than the Eye Can See.) Participants at the conference also had the opportunity to watch a sneak preview of the CBS show Numb3rs a new weekly series about a mathematician who solves crimes for the FBI by using equations. The screening was followed by a question and answer session with a panel made up of Numb3rs’ writers. |
