Clark Cellular One of San Luis Obispo, in an extension of its sponsorship of the Cuesta College Athletics Department, is proud to announce this monthís selections for the Cellular One Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our male selection for April is sophomore diver Sean Clark. Sean Clark can easily lay claim to being the best diver in the California Community College system. In his freshman year, he was named the 2003 State male diver of the year after winning a State title on the one-meter board and finishing second on the three-meter, after hitting the board. Clark remains undefeated this year and after sweeping the competition at the 2004 Cuesta Invitational, he will be the favorite on both boards at this yearís State meet. Clark has been the leading point scorer for the Cuesta Menís Swimming and Diving team this year and remains their best hope for a high finish at both the Western State Conference and State meets The Cougars are 5-1 and in second place in the Western State Conference. The Cougars are in position to win their eleventh WSC title in the past dozen years. |
Stephanie
Azevedo Our female selection for April is sophomore third baseman Stephanie Azevedo, She was the 2003 All-WSC First Team Third Baseman, but is having an even better sophomore campaign. She leads the Cougars with a .444 batting average on the season and her .500 average in Western State Conference (WSC) play leads the circuit. Azevedo did not have an extra base hit last year, but set a new Cuesta single season record this year with her sixth triple and has also hit the Cougars only home run. She hits third in the Cougars line up and is second on the team in both runs scored (25) and runs batted in (24). Azevedo has developed into a rare combination of speed and power. Her 23 career steals rank #2 All Time at Cuesta and her .375 career average is fourth. A smooth fielder at the "hot corner," Azevedo anchors one of the best infields in Cuesta history. The Cougars are currently 16-11 overall and 13-3 against the WSC. The Cougars are chasing their third consecutive WSC title and fourth straight playoff berth. |
