North County Campus Poetry Festival

   

April is going to be a month for poetry at the North County Campus. The second annual North County Campus Poetry Festival will feature plenty of activities for those faculty and staff who can appreciate a good verse.

Wednesday, April 13th, 7 p.m.:
Slam Poetry with Soulspeak Collective,
a group of Cal Poly poets.

Thursday, April 14th, 7 p.m.:
Fresno Poets Reading with Philip Levine, Liza Wieland and Connie Hales.
Levine is a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner. He’s published many books of poetry and currently teaches at NYU half the year. He resides in Fresno, CA the other half of the year.

Wieland has published story collections and novels, and her book of poetry is coming out this Spring 2005. She’s been the recipient of NEA grants and a Pushcart Prize, among others. She currently teaches literature and creative writing at CSU Fresno.

Hales has published various books of poetry and teaches literature and creative writing at CSU Fresno.

Monday, April 18th, 4 p.m. at North County Campus, 7 p.m. at SLO Campus.:

Gary Soto
Soto has published novels and books of poetry, and won numerous awards. He currently lives in Berkeley, CA.

Tuesday, April 19th, 7 p.m.:
Poets in Translation
North County Campus ESL students will perform their favorite poets in their native languages, and then translate them for the audience.

Wednesday, April 20th, 7 p.m.:

Local Poets with Kevin Clark and Autumn Newman
Clark has various books of poetry published and teaches literature and creative writing at Cal Poly.

Newman is a Cuesta College alumnus who transferred to CSU Sacramento as an English major. She has published her fiction and is currently completing her first book of poetry.

In addition, this evening will feature an Open Mic Reading by Cuesta staff, students and faculty, as well as the winners of the Tellus poetry contest.
