Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month’s selections for the Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport.
Daniel Hestehauge Our male selection for February is sophomore Guard Daniel Hestehauge. He is among the most dangerous marksman in community college basketball and makes opponents pay for every decent look he gets at the basket. Hestehauge struggled with injuries early in the season, but he has stepped up his level of play since January and is second in the Western State Conference with 19.0 points per game during conference play. He is averaging a solid 13.2 points per game overall and has also added 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest. He ranks among the State leaders in free throw (85.4%) and three-point percentage (41.9%) and his career marks of 82.6% from the free throw line and 40.8% from the three-point area both represent Cuesta Records. Hestehauge’s career scoring mark of 14.7 points per game is also among the top five in Cuesta History. The Cougars are 10-17 on the year, but their 4-3 mark in the Western State Conference has them in third place in the circuit.
Haley Woeste Our female selection for February is freshman cager Haley Woeste. She is recognized as one of the best guards in the Western State Conference and also is developing a reputation as a clutch player. Woeste scored a season-high 25 points in the Cougars road upset over #13 Santa Barbara (74-70), in a performance that included a 5-for-5 shooting display from beyond the three-point line. She also scored the game winner in the Cougars overtime win at Moorpark (68-67), while also leading the team with eight rebounds and four assists. On the year, Woeste is averaging 12.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, but as the Cougars chase their first playoff berth since 2002, she has increased all of those numbers during WSC play to 13.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. The Cougars are currently 19-7 and tied for second place in the Western State Conference with a 5-2 record mark against the loop. Their current winning percentage of .731 is the third best mark in school history. The 1982 team posted a .950 winning percentage and won the Northern California DII title, while the 1997 team had a mark of .794 and remains the only Cuesta team to reach the State Finals. |
