The City of San Luis Obispo had enough excitement at last year’s Mardi Gras celebration, which turned into a riot that involved more than 5,000 people, many of them hurling rocks and bottles at police. Just under 200 people were arrested. Taxpayer costs for the 2004 riot were estimated near $500,000.
In response, the City of San Luis Obispo, Cuesta College and Cal Poly are working in conjunction on a media relations campaign to encourage students that the Mardi Gras weekend, which begins February 4, is a good weekend to well…..just stay home.
The city has distributed flyers, posters and door-hangers, and is airing television and radio spots to get the message out to students. More information on city efforts can be found online at www.mardigrasslo.com.
