With a new, compact look that boasts easy-to-read graphics as well as expanded color and black/white photos, the Community Programs staff hopes that more SLO county residents will be inspired to pick up the booklets, peruse the offerings and then register for several of the lifelong learning opportunities. With hundreds of classes and workshops being offered from this month through May -- everything from Elegant Chocolate Desserts for Valentine’s Day to Kayak Day for Kids – there is something for everyone.

And for those who prefer armchair learning, many of the subjects are available online. For the third year in a row, Community Programs has partnered with Ed2Go (short for “Education to Go” -- the largest online adult continuing education provider in the world), to provide classes that run six weeks long. Two classes are released each week, but students can access information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and work at their own pace. “They are very popular with our students because they are a convenient way to build skills and knowledge,” says Community Programs Director Karen Tacket. “And employers also like this process because employees can take these courses and still be in their office and available for ongoing office work.”

The CP staff is also reaching out to young students during spring break. For the first time, students in fifth through eighth grades can spend their one-week vacation taking classes that include pottery, writing and Russian. The new booklet also provides information about Emeritus College, a free program for seniors offering classes that include Literature by Local Authors, Pastel Drawing and Genealogical Research.

Community Program coordinators are also always looking to present high quality programs led by experienced and informative instructors. Those interested in sitting on this other side of the classroom are encouraged to call the Community Programs office at 546-3132.

About 3,500 of the new booklets will be distributed countywide. They can be picked up at any Chamber of Commerce office, library and other government location (such as the SLO County Government Building), as well as popular coffee houses and restaurants. Using Cuesta’s database, about 29,000 additional issues have also been mailed out. For more information and/or to register online, go to www.communityprograms.net or call the Community Programs office at 546-3132. Completed registration forms also can be faxed to 546-3968. Walk-in registrations are also welcome – just visit the San Luis Obispo campus office to sign up.
