Scholarship Reception

Cuesta College’s annual Scholarship Reception is the unofficial start of the school year that officially begins Aug. 20. This year’s event — the 23rd annual — was held Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, to honor 161 students who shared more than $221,000 in funds. The event gives representatives of the nearly 150 individual scholarships an opportunity to meet the students whom their contributions are benefitting. This year, Terry Benevedo spoke about why he established a scholarship in the name of his late wife, Rosie, to assist nursing students. Jeanan McCullough and Bonnie Yanez, Cuesta students, gave moving addresses on what it means to be the recipient of a scholarships. Officials from Cuesta College Foundation said that 336 scholarships were awarded. Some students received more than one scholarship. Gil Stork, Cuesta College superintendent/president, said that with enrollment fees increasing by 77 percent over tha past two years “financial assistance for our students has never been more essential. These scholarship recipients are the future of our nation, and the scholarships awarded to them today will provide essential financial assistance to help them fulfill their educational dreams.” Stork also thanked the individuals and organizations for their dedication and commitment to our students.” (44 minutes)
