ABOUT THIS
ON-LINE COURSE

This course supports Math 242 (Precalculus Algebra) by presenting the features and use of a graphing calculator to solve problems specific to that course.

This is a flexible self-paced course, allowing the student to work through topics as they are introduced in their particular Math 242 class. Instead of attending classroom lectures, the student will work independently using a browser-based tutorial on their computer (either over the internet or on CD-ROM). Without the structure and routine of attending a traditional class, it is very important that the student be self-motivated, disciplined, and keep on schedule! Students who tend to procrastinate and complete assignments at the last minute rarely do well on the quizzes and do not get credit for the course. Click here for further information on the attributes of a successful distance-learning student. Expect to spend between 1-3 hours per week on this course.

ADD/DROP POLICY

Students will be added as space permits until Saturday, August 30. Send me an e-mail requesting to add the course and I will provide you with an add code so that you can add the course online.

If at any time you feel you need to drop the course, please notify me by e-mail. Then officially drop the course through the admissions office or myCuesta. Do not assume that I will do so for you. The deadline to drop the class without a "W" on your transcript is September 13. The deadline to withdraw from the class with a "W" grade is November 8.

COREQUISITES

Students are STRONGLY advised to enroll in Math 242 (Precalculus Algebra) concurrently with this course.

MINIMUM
REQUIREMENTS

Students must have access to e-mail and the internet. A CD-ROM drive is optional. The course is entirely browser-based, so no additional software is necessary. Internet Explorer 5.0 or Firefox 1.0, or higher, are recommended. See the Course Requirements page for more thorough details.

COURSE
MATERIALS

Calculator. A TI-83, TI-83 Plus, or TI-84 Plus graphing calculator is required. No other model is permitted for this section.

Tutorial. You must purchase an online subscription (Semester Plan) to The Precalculus Algebra TI-83/TI-84 Tutorial, or purchase the tutorial on CD-ROM (Version 1.5 or greater). CD's are available in the campus bookstore or can be purchased online. See the FAQ page for help in deciding which option is best for you.

Text. Because this course is meant to supplement Math 242, the textbook for that class, Precalculus (Seventh Edition) by Larson/Hostetler, is strongly recommended.

CONTACTING THE
INSTRUCTOR

You may drop by my office during scheduled office hours, call me on the phone, or send me an e-mail message. I will try to reply to all e-mail within 24 hours, with the exception of weekends and holidays.

MESSAGE BOARD

In myCuesta there is a message board available for this class so that you may communicate with other students. You can use the message board to make comments, ask questions, or touch base with your fellow classmates. To reach the class message board, log in to myCuesta. Click on the Student tab, and then click on the link in the My Courses channel. Under Courses I'm Attending, click on Math 142G. Finally, in the left column under Course Tools, click the link for Message Board.

As part of your orientation assignment you are required to post a reply to the Introductions thread. See the Online Orientation page for more details.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Students have six primary responsibilities in this class (see further explanations below):

  1. Complete the orientation assignment.

  2. Check myCuesta on a daily basis for important announcements or reminders of approaching deadlines.

  3. Keep up with your Math 242 class by working through the corresponding topics in the tutorial on a regular basis.

  4. Send a minimum of one e-mail update message each month. This e-mail update will be used to track your progress during the semester.

  5. Complete all required quizzes by the deadlines (October 24 and December 12). Take your online quizzes regularly throughout the semester. Do not wait until the deadline to submit your quizzes! Students who do so usually end up getting a No Credit for the course.

  6. Submit the Student Survey at the end of the semester.

Remember that this class will take time in addition to your other classes, so make sure you have set aside enough time (between 1-3 hours) in your schedule each week for this class!

ASSIGNMENTS
AND USING THE
TUTORIAL

Topics from the tutorial are assigned for each section of your Math 242 text on the Larson, Hostetler; Precalculus Textbook Guide found in the tutorial. As you complete a section of the text in your Math 242 class, you should immediately work through the corresponding topics in the tutorial for that section (a suggested pace is offered on the Course Schedule page). You are to read and work all examples in each topic as indicated in the Textbook Guide. Have your calculator in hand as you follow the examples in the tutorial, and make sure you are able to obtain the correct result on each page before proceeding to the next page. Many of the screen images are linked, and if you click on them you will see an animation of the sequence for that example. Most topics will conclude with a practice quiz. Work each of the practice quiz problems until you have mastered the skills for that topic. It is assumed that students will gain additional practice by working the homework problems assigned for the Math 242 class they are concurrently enrolled in.

ORIENTATION
ASSIGNMENT

Your orientation assignment consists of two parts:

  • posting a reply to the Introductions thread on the class message board, and
  • submitting an e-mail message to me with answers to five questions

Both parts of this assignment are explained in the Online Orientation page. Your orientation assignment is worth 100 points. Your e-mail must have ALL of the required information and it must all be CORRECT! This assignment is due by Noon Friday, September 5, 2008. Students who have not completed the required orientation by this deadline will be DROPPED FROM THE COURSE!

E-MAIL UPDATES

Students are required to correspond with the instructor by e-mail every four weeks. The purpose of this "update" is to maintain open and consistent communication with the instructor and tell him of your progress through the course. Each of the four update e-mails is worth 25 points. See the Course Schedule page for the deadlines (these deadlines are also posted on the class schedule in myCuesta). Any updates received after the deadline will be appreciated, but will not be awarded any points.

The subject in the e-mail update must be in the following form:
Last Name, First name: Math 142G Online Update

The body of your e-mail message MUST include three items: (1) the sections of the text and tutorial topics you have completed in the last month, (2) the section of the Math 242 text your class is currently at, and (3) a brief summary of your experience and progress during the past four weeks. Make sure to mention any areas of difficulty, and whether they were conceptual or technical in nature. In essence, tell the instructor how you are doing overall. These three items are REQUIRED and will allow the instructor to monitor your progress through the class. In addition, you are encouraged to add any comments you wish to make or ask any questions you may have.

Your e-mail update must be sent between noon Sunday
and 10:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Send your e-mail update to mturner@cuesta.edu.

QUIZZES

There will be seven online quizzes that are tied to your Math 242 text. Each quiz will cover the topics from the tutorial corresponding with certain sections of the textbook. The required sections for each quiz are listed on the Quizzes page. Because each Math 242 instructor will vary in how the course is taught, there may be some topics required for an online quiz that were not covered in your class. You are still responsible for these topics, so be sure you work through ALL required topics in the tutorial listed for each quiz!

To be prepared for the online quizzes, you should be able to work any of the example problems or practice quiz problems without referring to the tutorial and without mistakes. All students are expected to complete each quiz without outside assistance of any kind, and solutions submitted by e-mail are to be the sole work of the student. You may take an online quiz whenever you like. However, you may submit each quiz only ONCE, so do not attempt a quiz until you have studied and feel prepared!

To make sure you are progressing at an acceptable pace and are participating in the course as expected, there is a mid-semester quiz deadline. At least three of the seven quizzes (any three) must be submitted by Noon Friday, October 24. Students who do not meet this requirement by the deadline will be DROPPED FROM THE COURSE!

All seven online quizzes must be submitted by Noon Friday, December 12. NO quizzes will be accepted after this deadline!

STUDENT SURVEY

There is no final exam for this course. Instead, you will be asked to complete an online survey about your experiences in this class. This survey is MANDATORY to receive credit for the course. The link to the survey can be found on the Quizzes page. The survey can be submitted any time between December 12 and Noon, December 17. The information you provide will be used to make improvements for next semester, and to give future students advice about the course and how to be successful in it. Please consider giving your consent to "publish" your comments anonymously.

GRADING

Your grade will be based upon the following point distribution:

7 Online Quizzes 700 points
Orientation Assignment 100 points
4 E-mail Updates 100 points
Student Survey 100 points
Total possible 1000 points

Since the course is graded Pass/No Pass only, grades for the course will be assigned as follows (the Student Survey is required in order to receive credit):

0 - 699 points 700 - 1000 points
No Pass Pass

Your grades will be posted on the Grades page throughout the semester. Your student ID for this class is the last six digits of your Cuesta student ID number. The Grades page will be updated at least weekly.

TIPS FOR
SUCCESS IN
THIS ONLINE
CLASS

Practice.  Work the examples on your calculator as you read through the tutorial, following the key sequences provided. Repeat each sequence as necessary until you feel confident doing it without referring to the tutorial. Don't go on to the next page until you can correctly perform the skills for the current page.

Make Use Of The Animated Screens.  Click on every screen image that is hyperlinked to view the animated graphic and watch the step-by-step process.

Do All Practice Quiz Problems.  Do every practice quiz problem and then check your answer. If you made a mistake, use the hyperlink to return to the page in the tutorial where the relevant skill is covered and refresh your memory.

Use The Index.  If you have forgotten where a specific topic or feature of the calculator is covered in the tutorial, use the dual index to locate a related key word or calculator key.

Get Help.  If you are not able to achieve the correct results on a page of the tutorial and cannot figure out why, try one of the following things:
1. Check the mode settings on your calculator. Reset your calculator to the default settings if necessary.
2. Send me an e-mail. I will reply with some ideas as soon as possible.
3. Ask for help on the class message board.

Keep On Schedule.  Spend as much time as necessary to keep up with your Math 242 class. Submit quizzes on a regular basis. This should be an easy class to pass, but students who procrastinate rarely get credit for the course.
