  • The topics for this week are  dominant & non-dominant group relationships, access to power, access to education, access to economic & community health resources, prejudice, racism, institutional discriminatory practices that perpetuate disparate health status & availability, including access to health resources among a variety of ethnic minority groups, acceptance and tolerance.
     

  • The course objectives addressed are # 1 Examine and analyze the dimensions of health as defined by a variety of non-dominant ethnic/racial groups. # 2  Evaluate the impact of discrimination, racism, and prejudice on the physical, psychological and spiritual health of non-dominant ethnic groups and minorities. # 5 Evaluate individual risk factors for chronic diseases based on age, genetics, environmental health & nutrition choices.
     

  • The course outcomes addressed are # 3 Evaluate contemporary media and literature for institutional discrimination and analyze examples of dominant and non-dominant group conflict. # 6 Differentiate between bias, prejudicial and/or discriminatory behavior and non-judgmental and acceptance of others behavior/attitudes.   Diversity Rubric: # 1 Identify, assess and challenge bias assumptions and behaviors of individuals and societal institutions, # 2 Analyze inter-group relations within categories of identity, such as race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, class, ability, nationality or gage,  # 3Examine struggles of non dominant groups for power, justice, and access to resources.

Race Relations & Diversity (10points)

 Introduction: Definitions require an explanation that distinguishes the word from all other words.  No credit will be given for definitions that include the word you are trying to define.  Alternately when defining 'non-dominant' or minority group (synonymous) provide an explanation first (question #3), then Question #3 asks for examples of different types of non-dominant groups e.g., women, religious etc. Dominant and non-dominant group relations in society are directly related to power, control and access to the resources in a given society (e.g., education, high paying jobs, health care). You are encouraged to find alternate definitions on the Internet to expand your understanding of these basic diversity concepts.

5  Surf the Internet for a definition or explanation of the term 'acceptance' then find a definition/explanation of the term 'tolerance' and compare and contrast these two different concepts/terms. acceptance - definition of acceptance by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.
