Health 202 Distance Learning CRN

19 January 2010. Turn on your computer, launch Internet Explorer off
your desktop Icon and Go to http://www.cuesta.edu/disted/

know which CRN/Section of HE 202 Distance Learning you are officially enrolled in and
that you intend
to actively participate in the class starting the first week of the semester . It is necessary to contact Ms. Basti so your
enrollment can be verified and you can receive information on how to continue
in the class, including how you will receive the log in instructions and user
name and password for the virtual classroom.
I
have never taken a Distance class before, will I do okay?
Taking a WEB based course
requires a fair amount of self-discipline, initiative, and an intermediate
level of computer skills including knowing the difference between a Message
Board and a CHAT room and being familiar with logging into myCuesta.edu
to check your my.cuesta.edu g-mail. If you have never taken a WEB based
course before, I suggest you consider taking the online Internet course DIST
101 - Introduction to the Online Courses first. It is imperative the
student have intermediate computer skills and schedule time to complete
weekly homework and assignments, check their personal and Cuesta g-mail Inbox, and submit
course work on the due dates.
When
is the last day to register for HE 202 30347 or 30348?
The last day to add a course for the
Spring 2010 semester is Saturday, 30 January 2010. Students will need to
have an add code from the instructor to add a course anytime after Friday, 15
January 2010. Please see the Announcements
page if you would like to add HE 202 Distance Learning
30347 or 30348
Is
the 'Online Course Orientation' Required?
Yes, all students that are enrolled in Health 202 Distance Learning CRN 30347
& 30348 are required to complete the 'Online
Course Orientation'. This exercise assures students have the
information that is essential to succeed in this Distance Learning
course. Failure to familiarize yourself with the online library
resources, log in and navigating myCourses via myCuesta, and exam dates may make it
difficult for you to progress through weekly lessons and/or submit weekly
homework and assignments on time.
When
is the Online Course Orientation form Due?
The 'Online
Course Orientation' is due Thursday, 21 January 2010 by midnight (If you send it Thursday evening it
will be in my email Inbox by Friday morning)
What
if I have trouble submitting the form?
Make sure your computer email is set
to 'Rich Text' under 'Format' on your tool bar. Complete all the required
sections of the form. If the form still can not be submitted, 'Copy and paste' the form onto an email, complete
it, then send it directly to me mbasti@cuesta.edu
If your computer has any trouble interfacing with
the college technology please follow the troubleshooting links on the myCuesta
log-in page at https://my.cuesta.edu/cp/home/displaylogin
Occasionally MAC computers and software have difficulty interfacing with
Cuesta technology.
I
work, are there times when I am required to come to campus?
No, both sections of HE 202 Distance Learning
facilitated by Ms. Basti do not require any face-to-face meetings on campus.
Weekly Homework, Assignments and exams will be completed electronically.
Students are welcome however, to stop by my Cuesta office, Room 1315, Building
1300 to discuss grades or course content or call me to discuss course
content, clarify assignments or request an accommodation for a due date.
When
is the First Assignment Due?
The 'Introduction to Health'
Assignment is the first assignment and is due via e-mail to me mbasti@cuesta.edu by midnight on
Wednesday , 27 January 2010 for CRN 30347 & 30348 Please
submit on or before the due date/time because I do not accept late work
without prior correspondence and approval. No exceptions.
How
come I can not access our virtual class website and start the class now?
The '
Registration/Welcome Instruction' pages located
at http://www.cuesta.edu/disted/courses.asp
are the only pages available to students until the
student contacts the instructor by
e-mail to confirm their enrollment, participation, and the course materials
become available in myCourses via myCuesta log in.
These Registration/Welcome Instruction pages provide all the instructions and
information necessary to start the course and complete the Online Orientation
and first assignment. The website for our virtual classroom is password
protected. Students will be given the 'username', 'password' and
log-in instructions for the virtual classroom after they contact the
instructor and complete the Online Orientation. The virtual classroom
log-in instructions will be sent via myCuesta g-mail. It is the
student's responsibility to set up and log into their myCuesta g-mail Inbox.
If students elect to purchase the e-text
it will be available after 01 January 2010.
Additionally, we will be using a custom
website that is accessible directly on the Internet. Many features of
commercially prepared course management systems do not interface well with
the technology at the college and are based on Eastern Standard Time..

classroom is http://academic.cuesta.edu/mbasti/he202online

What
are the five (5) Dimensions of Health?
The five Dimensions of
Health include:
Spiritual Health [e.g., values, beliefs, rituals, intuition,
religion, creativity, philosophy of life, love, compassion, artistic
abilities];
Social Health [e.g., men's role,
child rearing practices, type of government, structure of society,
educational system, funeral practices, grief and loss activities];
Psychological Health [e.g., thoughts,
feelings, judgment, ability to think rationally, taking responsibility for
one's actions, substance abuse & addictive behaviors, domestic
violence];
Physical Health [e.g., major (chronic) diseases,
communicable/contagious infections, exercise/fitness, nutrition, body fat
composition]; and
Environmental Health [e.g., food choices, geography, rainfall,
quality of the food supply, quality of air, land, water, and population].
Chapter 1 in Teague et al. also discusses the dimensions of
health. In order to study and understand health promotion, health
risk reduction, self empowerment and chronic diseases it is important to look
at all aspects of health, that is, take a holistic approach to health.
How
do I contact the instructor?
The instructor, Ms. Basti,
can be reached by telephone, e-mail, or in person during regular
office hours or by appointment. My office telephone number, with
24 hour voice mail, is 805.546.3100 ext. 2700. My office Room
number is 1315 in building 1300 ( next to the Flag pole on the SLO
campus). My regularly scheduled office hours are included in my
outgoing message on my voice mail system. The instructor's e-mail
address is mbasti@cuesta.edu
I do check voice mail and e-mail regularly over the summer, winter
break, and
most weekends.
For ALL email correspondence to me, please use the format, Subject Box: 202, CRN 30347 or 30348, (Your Last Name) and title of assignment.
For example, 202 30348 Smith HW #2. My
distance students have my priority for email, so it is critical that you
complete the 'Subject Box' correctly on all your electronic
correspondence with me. Failure to complete the subject box correctly
as indicated above, may delay my response to you or prevent me from receiving
your e-mail e.g., your message may end up as SPAM. Weekly homework
assignments will be sent directly to my email address.
Note: If you
are using yahoo or other web based email programs please check your SPAM
folder periodically for correspondence from HE 202 just in case reply
messages from the instructor were filtered out by virus protection settings.
What
is the workload like for Health Education 202?
Health Education 202 (HE 202) is an
integrated 3.0 unit lecture class that meets the Health Requirement for
graduation at Cuesta
College. The
course content and health outcomes are the same for students registered in
a traditional classroom section of HE 202. As expected of any
integrated 3.0 unit lecture course at
Cuesta College,
plan on at least 6-8 hours minimum of work per week ( i.e., Two hours
out-of-class prep for each unit of instruction per week) to
complete assignments and weekly homework. There is a health literature
analysis term paper involving the critique of a medical journal research
article, a one day diet diary and diet analysis, food label analysis
activity, spiritual fitness plan, and other short report type formal
assignments. HE 202 Distance Learning requires a moderate amount of
reading and Internet research assignments.
When
are the exams scheduled?
The exams will be administered
electronically the week of 15 March 2010 (midterm #1) and the week of 05 May
2010 (midterm #2). Students will be provided instructions via myCuesta
g-mail via myCourses, the Virtual Classroom via Announcements,
and the Course Syllabus for exam procedures. Students will be ask to sign up
for a date and block of time to receive the exam during the above weeks.
Can
I complete the course work at my own pace and turn it in when ever I want?
Yes, as long as your work is submitted
before the posted due date.
The assignments are designed in sequence in which material is presented
from a simple to complex manner to develop and apply concepts of media
literacy, disease prevention, health promotion, personal health risk factor
identification, and lifestyle changes. This class requires regular effective
contact via Homework that is assigned weekly to assure students are able to
progress through this 3.0 unit lecture course during the semester and be
successful on exams.
