MATH 122

Two-Semester Beginning Algebra: Part 2


5.0 hours lecture per week.
Associate Degree Applicable.
Prerequisite: MATH 021 or equivalent with a grade of C or better (Two-Semester Beginning Algebra, Part 1).

Presents the second half of a two-semester course in beginning algebra for the student who has no algebraic background. This course enables the students to complete the equivalent of Elementary Algebra (MATH 123) at a slower pace. Successful completion of MATH 021 or equivalent and MATH 122 is equivalent to MATH 123.


Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
 1. Simplify the following:
        ·    polynomial expressions
        ·    radical expressions
        ·    exponential expressions
 2. Solve the following:
        ·    quadratic equations:
                 ·    by factoring
                 ·    by quadratic formula
        ·    radical equations
 3. Factor polynomials using:
        ·    greatest common factor
        ·    grouping
        ·    trinomial techniques:
                 ·    leading coefficient of one
                 ·    leading coefficient other than one
        ·    binomial techniques:
                 ·    difference of squares
                 ·    sum and difference of cubes
 4. Solve applications of:
        ·    linear inequalities
        ·    quadratic equations
