Initial Communications
If you are enrolled in one of the training module classes, your name will have been added to our listserv and discussion board list. Please take some time to post an introduction to the class discussion board. You can do this by clicking on the "Discussion" link either on this page or on the Information page. You will see your instructor's introduction already posted, you will just need to click on and read it, and then click on "Reply." Obviously, you will want to read the introductions of each class member.
We will also be using a Listserv, which your instructor will use to post class announcements. In most cases, you will not "reply" to these announcements because when you reply, your e-mail will go out to everyone in the class. If one of the announcements elicits a question, send a reply e-mail to your instructor off the list by typing their e-mail address into the "To:" line of your message. You can also make use of the listserv to post messages to the class. When you click on the individual listserv link this should launch your e-mail client software.
For class assignments, we will use a discussion board. This board will allow you to view all responses by class members and allow you to respond to individual assignments or to responses of other students. In this way, a topic "thread" is created and archive online for you to return to as you wish. We may also use an online post form for submitting some assignments.
How to begin the training
The Learning Technology Series modules revolve around individual lectures. To best accomodate your individual learning preference, the lectures are provided in four different formats. Begin by selecting one of the lecture formats.
- A web-based PowerPoint presentation that is complete with lecture notes.
- QuickTime video
- Text only file (HTML)
- MP3 audio
During the lecture, you will be instructed to look at the support documents. Pause the presentation and minimize the presentation window to review support documents. If you like, you can wait and view all support documents after you have completed the lecture. There are support documents for each lecture. To view the support docs, just return to the table of contents. This will be easy because the lecture will be contained in a floating window over the table of contents. You will just need to minimize the lecture window and then view the support documents.
Finally, after completing the lecture and viewing support documents, you will complete assignments. A link to the assignment page is located on the home page. The assignments will require you to post remarks to the discussion board or paste a response into the assignment form.
Computer Requirements
The contents of the LTS site should be viewed in an 800 x 600 (or higher) screen resolution. You can modify (or check) screen settings in the "Display" or "Monitors" control panel. Lecture videos and PowerPoint presentations should be viewed in "Full Screen" mode in your browser. In some browsers this is accomplished using the "Collapse Toolbars" command under the Edit menu. Netscape users may need to simply collapse toolbars one at a time to increase screen viewing space.
The LTS modules contain numerous high-bandwidth files including audio, video and graphics. In order to play them acceptably, you should have a Mac or PC running a 300 Mhz processor (or better), Windows 95 (or better) or Mac OS 8.6 (or better), and have at least 64 Mb of RAM (preferrably more).
To view the movie files and listen to audio, you should have the most recent version of the QuickTime® plug-in installed in your browser. You can download the QuickTime software at: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ Or, you can click on the QuickTime logo below.
For listening to the audio only files, you can configure your browser to use WinAmp, Microsoft Media Player, or any other MP3 player. QuickTime is useful because it will handle all the media files on this disc.
Important: be sure that you configure your browser to use the QuickTime plug-in noted above. These preferences can be set up in the browser "Preferences" or "Set-up" sections.
