CUESTA COLLEGE
EQUIVALENCY PROCESS
If you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the position, as
defined in
this job announcement, but feel that you possess the equivalent of those qualifications*,
you may request an equivalency judgment, first by the
Selection Committee and then decisively, by the Academic Senate
Equivalency Process Committee.
*The question is not whether you "could teach the class," but whether you can
show that you have acquired the equivalent of the minimum qualifications.
PROCESS FOR REQUESTING AN EQUIVALENCY JUDGMENT
Please refer to the
job
announcement for the minimum qualifications of positions for
which you are applying.
If you claim that you possess the equivalent of the minimum qualifications, you must,
according to Board Policy, establish the equivalent of a required degree in level of
achievement and breadth and depth of understanding for each of the following as
separate and distinct criteria:
A. The General Education required for that degree;
B. The major required for that degree.
Applicant: As documentation to show that you possess equivalency to the minimum
qualifications, please include all transcripts of college-level course work and provide a
statement indicating in what way your education and/or experience is equivalent to the
minimum qualifications.
If you are applying for a position which also requires practical experience (e.g.,
vocational disciplines, coaching athletics), you must additionally provide conclusive
evidence of the following to be judged to possess equivalent qualifications:
A. Mastery of skills thorough enough for the proposed specific assignment and broad enough
to serve as a basis for teaching the other courses in the discipline;
B. Extensive and diverse knowledge of the working environment of the discipline.
Applicant: As documentation to show that you possess equivalency in experience, if this is
applicable to you, please include your work history, recommendations regarding that work
history, and a statement indicating why you feel your experience is equivalent to the
minimum qualifications.
Applicants should include the following materials in their packet for equivalency:
| 1. A Cuesta College job application for each position for which applying. |
| 2. An indication of what course or courses the candidate is applying to teach. |
| 3. All transcripts of academic work. |
| 4. Any and all other material that would support an argument for equivalency; that is, a
resume of relevant experiences, publications, presentations, informal courses,
conferences, workshops, career experiences, and other life experiences. Xeroxed copies of
catalog pages showing minimum requirements of an M.A. program will often be helpful in
showing what is, in fact, required, or similar documentation for B.A. programs or
certificates of proficiency, if applying for a position for which an M.A. is not required. |
| 5. A letter showing why, on what basis, the candidate thinks the equivalency should be
granted. This would include an analysis of number 3 or 4 above, noting what is lacking in
formal education and arguing why other experiences are to be considered equivalent. |
THIS MATERIAL MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR APPLICATION.
If you are applying for equivalency,
be sure that you check item 4 on page 1 of the
application.
