"A gifted leader" is one
of many terms that could be applied easily to Greig Welch, who has been named
CuestaÕs 2004 Honored Alumnus of the Year.
Welch is currently the principal of Paso Robles High School. He attended Cuesta
from 1968 to 1970, playing quarterback for the late Cuesta College football
team. Welch continued his education at Chico State and continued to play
football, earning a bachelorÕs degree in physical education and a masterÕs
degree in educational administration.
Welch joined the faculty at Paso Robles High School in 1973, serving as a physical education and science instructor, athletic director, counselor, assistant high school principal and middle school principal. He has significantly influenced the lives of many North County youth, and has served quietly as a community volunteer on the Youth Task Force, and as a coach for many youth sports.
"Whether he demonstrated as the quarterback
on his football team or as the principal of a high school, it is always evident
that Greig can motivate people," said nominator Dee Lacey, a former Cuesta
College Board Trustee. "He is truly a caring and compassionate man. I have
seen Greig work miracles with children and with demoralized staff. His sense of
humor has saved many a tense situation."
