General Information

The Cuesta College Emergency Medical Technology Program has been established to provide the new student with training that will enable them to be highly competitive in the Emergency Medical Services job market. The EMT-1 (basic) class provides the foundation training, both in terms of academic and practical skill experience. During the semester, they will have the opportunity to participate in clinical observation, both in the field (fire department and ambulance ride-along) and emergency room setting, as well as direct integration in a automobile extrication session. Through out the semester, guest speakers and practical demonstrations are provided for the students.

Concurrent during the fall and spring semester is a 24 hour session in a Hazardous Materials (Haz Mat), First  Responder Operations course, which is currently required by EMS employers. This segment helps provide the background knowledge to allow for a safe response to a dangerous Haz Mat event.   This class is coordinated with the Outreach Program at the California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) and the students will also receive a CSTI Certificate.

The third  component of the Emergency Medical Technology Program is the Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) which is currently held during the spring session. This course is designed to introduce the student to safe and effective, emergency vehicle operation with emphasis on defensive tactics. Students receive both classroom review and field "hands-on" driver training.

In addition to the above, EMT refresher classes are provided to help bring current EMT personnel up-to-date with the latest information. These classes help maintain an EMTs certification status, particularly helpful when required for their employment.

The EMT program is presently staffed by 8 instructors, and 22 assistant instructors. This staff represents a wide variety of EMS experience, including ambulance, fire department, nursing, search & rescue and hospital based staffing.

Classes are held  at both the San Luis Obispo campus and the North County Campus. For information pertaining to specific class dates and times, please refer to the Cuesta College Class Schedule. Please use the direct links to the left for more information on each of the courses.
