Rapuano, Mary Anne - The central coast of California provides
endless inspiration for Mary Anne's colorful paintings. Born
and educated in New England, she began as a teacher of art
and taught in the public schools from Kindergarten through
college levels. Teaching in Connecticut, California and
Europe led her to Cambria, a village where many artists,
writers, musicians and others have chosen to settle. "I find
being in the company of other creative people, and being in
such a beautiful part of the world very inspiring. No matter
how you may feel, you are ready to try for that perfect
composition once again." Mary Anne works primarily in
watercolors and other water media. Although she has a small
studio in her home she does quite a bit of plein air
painting. She starts by planning a painting with small
sketches, then uses watercolor crayons to lay the design out
on watercolor paper (Waterford 200 or 300 lb). Working from
light to dark and using carefully applied washes, she tries
to make each painting one which the viewer can "walk into".
"To give a feeling of space, of depth and breadth…that is
always a challenge for me with each painting."
