Barbara McGee

Picture of Instructor Barbara McGeeI graduated with a BA in economics from UCLA, cum laude and phi beta kappa, and  quickly followed up with a Master of Arts in economics from UCLA.  I was on my way to becoming a successful business woman. But when I began working in an economic research firm, I found I didn’t like the smog or the drive through worker traffic to downtown LA. So. . .back to UCLA for a secondary teaching credential in mathematics, economics, and Italian. After teaching junior high school mathematics for 3 years, I discovered I liked teaching, but I did not like spending so much time and energy disciplining the students so. . .

Back to school again: Bachelor of Science from CSUN followed by Master of Science from USC, both in mathematics. That was a lot of years living near the poverty level on part time salaries. But it was worth it.

The first job I ever really liked: teaching mathematics, economics, and computer science at a small private 2-year college, Marymount College, Palos Verdes, California. I stayed at that job 14 years. During that time I performed in several dance companies and did some musicals in community theater (love to dance), I met and married my husband (love him too), and I traveled with a group of students to China (twice) as part of a comparative cultures class. They were great years with some wonderful experiences, but the beach town where I lived was becoming more and more crowded as was the entire Los Angeles area. When it got to the point where we could not walk our dogs off a leash anywhere near our home, and my overworked knees were restricting my dancing, we decided to look for a new home. We drove up the coast, saw a small community college called Cuesta College, and decided to stop by the math department. The division chair was Gil Peter, who was in the office even though the school was on a break. He impressed me right away; I did a little research, and discovered Cuesta College had a good reputation, particularly the disabled students program. I had enjoyed utilizing the disabled students program at Marymount to enhance my students’ success. Cuesta College sounded too good to be true, but the school and staff were even better than I had hoped, and I have been happily ensconced here at Cuesta ever since. The students are good-natured, my colleagues are brilliant, and math lives and grows at Cuesta College. I still take a dance class now and then.

I also enjoy golfing and bike-riding and going to garage sales on Saturday mornings.

I was included in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1998.
