2009 Roster
PreviewPeter Jennings Schuler For Immediate Wrestling’s Creates a New Attitude for Success SAN LUIS OBISPO (September 14, 2009)— Coach Joe Dansby (46-41/9th year) goes down his list as he looks over his roster for the 2009 campaign, “Conditioning? Check! Heart? Check!” Talent? Check!” The Cuesta Wrestling Team now only needs to impose something that Dansby describes as “An attitude on the mat”. The Cuesta Wrestling team has thirty grapplers slugging it out in the room for only ten starting spots and Dansby likes seeing the competition everyday. He feels if his wrestlers can create an attitude that they are in fact going to win each and every time they step foot on a mat, “It will be infectious and the Cougars will have an extremely successful season. Since the very first day of practice coaches have been conveying to the wrestlers to take charge of what is happening in the 30-foot circle and make sure that they know they are in better position, superior shape, and utterly more deserving than their opponents.” Dansby adds, “The coaches look forward to a successful season focusing on two critical areas that may require a little luck: 1) staying healthy and 2) peaking at the right time. Possessing these factors plus developing an attitude on the mat ….we will then expect to win! Go Cougars!!!!” Below is a weight-by-weight breakdown 133- This weight class is wide open for a battle amongst the freshmen. There is a very good chance that one of the wrestlers from the 125-division will move up, but also Chris Nilsen (Phelan) has made strides over the last few months should set well here. Coach Dansby says, “Chris looked surprising in the intra-squad and it will be nice to see what he can do with a full year of tournaments behind him. I think Chris will be the sleeper.” 141- The Cougars plan to move sophomore John Banke (Livermore) down to this weight class. Banke wrestled at 149 and 157 last season and ended the year at 149-pounds at the 2008 Southern California Regional Championships. He posted a total mark of 9-11 on the year. Dansby says, “He is looking very sharp in all positions (top, bottom and neutral). John has taken on a leadership role for the team this year and most likely will be one of the team’s captains. He will start competing at 149 pounds and try and go down a weight class the last part of the year to make a run at the State Title.” Freshman Danny Flanagan (Pleasanton) came out for the team late and hasn’t had a chance to wrestle much. He loves wrestling and because he is not afraid to work out hard he could be another sleeper. Former CIF Qualifier Max Kincaid (Arroyo Grande HS) and Ricky Gonzales (Paso Robles HS) will also compete in this division. 149- 2008 All WSC selection Spencer Anderson (Gridley HS) will jump up a weight from last year and should get the starting position at this weight class. He wrestled at 141, 149 and 157 last year, however he was a Southern Regional Qualifier at 141. He was 13-11 last season. Dansby says, “Spencer is very physical and a grinder on top. I look for Spencer to do some big things this year as he sets his sights on being an All American.” 2009 All-WSC Second Team Pole Vaulter Cody Bryant (Porterville) makes the transition from the port-a-pit to the wrestling mat. Dansby says, “If Cody can stay healthy and in the room I think he is going to be a valuable asset to the team.” Freshman Cisco Greco (Lincoln HS) will also compete at this weight, as well as probable redshirt Tanner Murrietta (Hanford HS). 157- Sophomore Devon Kaneko (Paso Robles HS) will battle for this spot. Devon, who was 2-8 last season, has put in a lot of off-season time getting in better shape and doing some cross training in the spectrum of martial arts. He will battle with two-time CIF Qualifier Javier Avila (Salinas), who is getting better everyday, and Bo Carvallo (Fresno), who is coming back after break from wrestling and finding his way back into his mat sense. This will be a very contested weight class. 165- The Cougars will begin the season with Kaneko, Avila and Carvallo working through this spot, but by the end of the season two-time State qualifier Mike Brady (San Clemente HS) will work into this weight class. Dansby says, “Mike is physical and has enough experience to make a solid run at All-American status.” 174- Three-time State Qualifier Jake DesRoches (Deer Park, WA) will be the man at this weight. Dansby says, “Jake has the potential to place real high in the State Finals with the motion that he creates on his feet and never say die attitude. “ 184- Former CIF Champion and State Place winner Jack Robinett (Atascadero HS) has the early edge at this weight class. Talented, but raw, Hunter Baird (Salinas) is another State Place Winner at this weight. Robinett and Baird also have to fend off a pair of “long, lanky and dangerous” grapplers, John Kopet (Snohomish, WA) and CJ Marvin (Vista HS). There may be adjustments up and down weights for these wrestlers, however the push for All-American status looks extremely strong here. 197- There will be fallout from the 184-division, but Dale Fuller (Ridgecrest) and Jacob Carlos (Burlingame HS) will also be contesting this weight class. Heavyweight Jr. Lugo (Greenfield) may drop down to this weight by the end of the year too, which with his hips and throwing ability could chalk up another All-American for Cuesta. 285- Two-time State Runner Up Dan Colbert (Meridian, ID) and two-time State Qualifier Jake Mei (Creston: Atascadero HS) will be battling it out in the room and contesting another possible All-American spot with Lugo. Dansby says, “Each of our heavyweights has their own unique style. Jr. has the maturity and upper body awareness; Dan has agility and lower attacks, while Jake has strength and size.
