Game NotesWOMEN'S WATER POLO Cuesta 14, LA Valley 7 Notes- The Cougars started slowly in their Western State Conference game against LA Valley. The Cougars shot 4-for-14 in the first half, but the turned it around in the second half by drawing earning four of their five extra man opportunities and scoring ten times on a dozen shots. The Cougars cruised to victory after scoring five time in each of the last two quarters after heading into the intermission down by one. 2008 All SoCal Second Teamer Morgan Thompson scored five of her game-high six goals after the break, while Ashley Smith and Heidi Link both added three goals. Goalie Aubree McAtee pulled down eight saves in the goal as the Cougars improved to 6-7 with her between the pipes. Overall the Cougars are 9-15 on the season and 2-2 in the WSC circuit. Next- Cuesta will play in the truWest Battle at the Beach this weekend in Long Beach. The tournament will run Friday and Saturday. The men's coach asked to call in the score. 11TH ANNUAL RABOBANK TOURNAMENT Game 1 Game 2 Notes- The Cougars picked up two wins on Day 2 of the 11th Annual Rabobank Tournament and secured 6th place in the event. In their opener against West Valley, the Cougars held a one-point lead at the intermission, but then outscored the Vikings 8-2 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Two-meter Player Ashley Smith, who missed yesterday due to illness, and 2008 All Southern California selection Morgan Thompson each had five goals in the game. In Game 2 the Cougars battled Diablo Valley into sudden death overtime, but still earned the 12-11 victory. Thompson's turnover with ten seconds left in regulation allowed the Vikings to send the game into overtime, however she also won the game :22 into sudden death with her game-high sixth goal. The Cougars are now 7-10 on the year. Next- The Cougars will play at Citrus College on Thursday (4 PM) in a Western State Conference game and then spend Friday and Saturday at the Pasadena Tournament. Other Scores- Rabobank Tournament Game 1 Game 2 Notes- The 11th Annual Rabobank Tournament host the best teams in the State and the unranked Cuesta Cougars ran into a pair of juggernauts on the first day. The Cougars lost to both #1 Golden West and #3 Long Beach and will play in the for sixth place tomorrow. Coach Pete Schuler said, "It was one of the toughest days you can imagine. We played both two of the toughest teams in the state and had to do it with out three players from our starting rotation." The Cougars came out slowly in both games, but always battled aback. The pulled within two goals with under a minute left in the third quarter against Golden West, but could not close the gap any further and fell away in the final nine minutes of the contest. Against Long Beach, the Cougars were within two goals with under two minutes left in the first half, but lost both leading scorer Morgan Thompson and steal leader Audrey Baker to fouls. The Cougars already depleted bench provided the Vikings the chance to pour it on- and they did keeping up their press and outscoring the Cougars 14-3 the rest of the way, including three goals by their star Melissa Mansana in the final two minutes. The Cougars are now 5-10 on the year. Next- Cuesta will play West Valley (8:30 AM) and Diablo Valley (1:30) tomorrow. Other Scores- WOMEN'S WATER POLO Notes- The Cuesta poloists swept a men and women's Western State Conference doubleheader over Santa Monica to win their first conference game of the year. Both team are two years removed from the WSC titles they won in 2007 and today was the first step back towards the top of the loop. The men jumped out early with a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and a 14-3 lead at the half. Freshman Paul Byrne was one of a dozen Cougars to score and led all scorers with four goals. Coach John Marsh was able to empty his bench in the 20-6 win, which improved his record to 5-6 on the year. The women started slowly and emptied their bench in the first quarter only to have the reserves, led by Sophie Mouret's two goals, break open the game with a 3-0 lead in the first. Santa Monica bounced back and took a 6-4 lead at the intermission, but Cuesta's starting group re-entered the game in the second half and reeled off the next seven goals to take back the lead for good. 2008 WSC Player of the Year Morgan Thompson led the Cougars with four goals, while 2008 All-WSC 1st Teamer Erin Gray added three. The Cougars improved to 5-8 with the 13-10 win. Next- The men are scheduled to play at Ventura in another Western State Conference doubleheader next Wednesday. The women will host the 11th Annual Rabobank Tournament this Friday and Saturday. They will play their first game at 10:30 on Friday against Golden West. he men are also scheduled to follow today's doubleheader with a game against Cal Poly Club at 7 PM. Central Coast Women's Water Polo Tournament- Cuesta College, September 11-12, 2009 GAME 1 GAME 2 Other Scores- Notes- The Cougars finished in third place at their Central Coast Tournament after losing two games today. The Cougars lost the opener to Foothill, 19-7, and to defending State Champion Cerritos 22-8. Freshmen Heidi Link and Audrey Baker, both from Nipomo High, each scored in each game and sophomore Aubree McAtee added nine saves on the day during her first weekend in the goal. The Cougars are currently 2-2. Next: Cuesta will play in he Nyquist Tournament at West Valley College in Saratoga next Friday and Saturday. Central Coast Women's Water Polo Tournament- Cuesta College, September 11-12, 2009 GAME 1 GAME 2 Other Scores- Notes- The Cougars opened their season with a pair of wins and vaulted themselves into tomorrows championship round. The Cougars faced Ohlone in their season opener and used their stingy defense to shut the Renegades out for the final three quarters. The Cougars also received multiple goals from five different players. In Game 2, Cabrillo College jumped out early and held a 3-1 advantage after the first period, but the Cougars rallied to take back control of the game. Cuesta scored nine of the games next ten goals and took a commanding lead into the final quarter. 2008 All SoCal Second Teamer Morgan Thompson led the Cougars with seven goals in the contest. The Cougars are currently 2-0. Next: Cuesta advances to the championship bracket and will play both Foothill (10:30) and defending State Champion Cerritos (2:30) tomorrow, Saturday September 12th.
