About the coach.....
PETE SCHULER- WOMEN’S WATER POLO pschuler@cuesta.edu

Pete Schuler Women's Water Polo Coach Cuesta CollegePete was hired as Cuesta's first women's water polo coach in March 1999 and continues to serve as the school’s Sports Information Director. He led the Cougars to a 21-9-1 mark and into the playoffs, where they ended their inaugural campaign within a game of the State Championship Tournament. The Cougars have posted a 188-116-3 record in their first ten seasons and reached the playoffs six times.
Pete's water polo experience is extensive. He came to Cuesta as a student in 1989 and led Cuesta to its best two-year span with a record of 65-5 and to two state championship water polo games. He was named to the All-American First Team after both seasons and Cuesta finished as State Runner's up both years. He continued his education at Pepperdine University where he was a two-time NCAA All American and twice led the Waves into the NCAA Championships. Pete graduated from Pepperdine in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. In 1994, Pete earned a bronze medal at the US Olympic Festival in St. Louis and continued to train with the US National Team until 1996. He continues to compete in water polo tournaments with the SLO Polo Master’s team. In 2008, he completed his Master’s Degree, with distinction, at nearby Cal Poly SLO.
Pete's first coaching job was with the Cal Poly SLO women's club team in 1990 and 1991. While at Pepperdine, he coached perennial powerhouse Foothill High and first-year program Malibu High. He also coached Cal Poly's men's club team in 1996 and served as the Cougars’ Men’s Water Polo Assistant from 1994-1998.
Pete is married and lives with his wife Emily in Cayucos

Season Preview

The Cougars offense will start with 2008 All Southern California Second Team selection Morgan Thompson (Paso Robles HS). Thompson will be used both inside and outside on offense and will be joined by newcomer Ashley Smith (Lompoc: Cabrillo HS) and freshman Corinna Crockett (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS) at two-meters. Thompson, who was also the 2008 Western State Conference Player of the Year, set the Cuesta record with 95 goals last season and ended the season ranked 5th in the state in scoring. Smith is back in the pool after two years at Cal Poly. She played for former Cuesta star Corey McIntyre at Cabrillo High in Lompoc, where she led the Conquistadors to a CIF title and was named All-CIF First Team. Crockett was injured in an ATV accident this summer and will begin the season on the injured reserve. She will spend the bulk of the season rehabbing with the intent of redshirting, but could play a significant role if she continues to recover ahead of schedule.
2008 All Western State Conference First Team selection Erin Gray (Atascadero HS), All-CIF freshman Heidi Link (Nipomo HS) and CSU Bakersfield Transfer Maggie Evans (Santa Maria: St Joseph) will all fill multiple roles for the Cougars on offense and defense. Gray scored 23 goals for the Cougars last season and has stepped up for her sophomore season. She has returned bigger, stronger and faster and is primed for a big season. Gray has also begun to take a greater leadership role this season. Link has the skill to play anywhere in the tank and may also rotate into set with Thompson and Smith. She combines a good shot and plenty of presence in the water. Evans scored four goals for the Roadrunners, but is expected to play a major offensive role for the Cougars this season. She is one of the fastest players on the team and her year of NCAA experience will be invaluable.
2008 All-WSC Drivers Kat Shellooe (Atascadero HS) and Krystine Sargent (Modesto) lead a talented group of drivers. Freshmen Sophie Mouret (Morro Bay HS), Audrey Baker (Nipomo HS), Michelle Clark (Coarsegold) and Emily Kimmell (SLO HS) give the Cougars plenty of depth and ability at the driver position. Shellooe scored 11 goals for the Cougars last season and added speed off the bench as a freshman, but has worked hard in the off-season and should earn a starting spot. Sargent also scored 11 goals for the Cougars, but missed part of swim season with wrist surgery. Her return to form will add vital experience to the starting rotation. Mouret was Morro Bay’s MVP and brings plenty of tenacity, as well as, speed and a good shot. Baker offers solid all around play and is one of the best team defenders on the squad. She has shown the ability to make her teammates better. Clark spent last year at CSU Long Beach, but did not play fro the 49ers. She has made up for her off year by being one of the team’s hardest workers. Kimmell started at Cuesta last spring and missed her senior season of high school ball. She will have the opportunity to make up for that missed experience this fall. She spent the spring and summer playing in the polo class and is expected to contribute this season. She also brings one of the team’s best shots and an eagerness to improve.
The Cougars do not have a natural goaltender this season, so they are trying to make one. 2008 All-WSC Driver Aubree McAtee (Roseville) scored only four goals for the Cougars last season, but was respected for her defensive work. This year she spend most of her time on defense fulltime as the Cougars’ goalie, although she will see some time in the field. McAtee and freshmen Rachel Milne (Nipomo HS) and Lisa Mosbacher (Folsom HS) have all been working hard to get ready for the season. Milne, who was an all-league driver for the Titans, and McAtee will battle for the starting spot as they both learn the position. This is Mosbacher’s first year of water polo, but she is developing quickly in the most difficult position to learn and could become a factor later in the season.
