Ed Musolff Head Coach Women's Basketball

Under head coach Ed Musolff’s guidance the Cuesta College Women’s Basketball program has been highly successful. He is currently the longest serving active coach in the state and has been the program’s only head coach. He has led Cuesta to 423 wins and 13 playoff appearances in his 29-year tenure. In 1997, Ed was recognized as the State Coach of the Year and State Coach of the Year. The Cougars 27 wins in 1997 represented a new school record and their trip to the State Championship Tournament was their first since the State Playoff format was adopted. Musolff coached Cuesta to back-to-back conference titles in 1981 and 1982 with his 1982 team winning the DII Northern California Regional title.
Musolff came to Cuesta after completing a wide range of educational and professional experiences. He began his coaching career in 1969 serving as freshmen and assistant varsity coach at the University of California at San Diego. He then served as assistant coach at Cal Poly SLO for one year while beginning his coaching and teaching career at Morro Bay High School. His first year at Morro Bay resulted in cross country and track championships. As the junior varsity basketball coach at Morro Bay he led his team to a 35-9 record over two years. He then amassed a 54-48 record as varsity coach before coming to Cuesta. Ed continued to teach at Morro Bay High, while coaching at Cuesta, until he retired from teaching in 2008.
Ed and his wife Caroline live in Cayucos and have three children – David, Dan and, Carrie. Carrie was the 1996 Cuesta College Athlete of the Year and Dan played basketball for Cuesta in 1995-96. They also have two granddaughters, Isabella and Laela, and two grandsons, Waylon and Isaac.

Cuesta Women’s Basketball Look Ahead with Size and Experience

SAN LUIS OBISPO (November 11, 2009)— Cuesta Coach Ed Musolff is stepping into his 30th season with another potential playoff team, although after three decades on the bench Musolff knows there is still a lot of work to do and that its long season. Musolff noted that this year’s team must avoid the injuries that robbed last year’s squad of its post-season aspirations, but also says of this year’s team, “We are bigger, we have more sophomores and we have depth. We just need some games to see how we come together.” The Cougars return four starters, added three four-year bounce backs and include only one true freshman on the 13-woman roster. They also boast eight players at or near six-feet tall. The team’s size will cause match-up problems for opponents and fit nicely into Musolff’s traditionally post-oriented offense. The longest serving basketball coach in the State expresses a lot of enthusiasm for his 30th Cuesta team and says, “We have the potential to be very competitive. We have good players and great attitudes.” It looks like another big year for the Cougars and Musolff.
The Cougars will begin their season at home this Wednesday. The Cougars open the season with Monterey Peninsula College at 6 PM.
Below is a breakdown of the Cougars Roster.
Point Guard- True freshman Jayme Salim (Delano) will run the show for the Cougars at point guard. She has picked up the offense quickly, sees the floor very well and established herself as a leader. Coach Musolff says, “She is very quick handles the ball well. She is an aggressive player.” The Cougars also return Kathy Jones (Rocklin), who served as their starting point guard last season. Jones missed eight games and had off-season knee surgery and will still see time at the point. She led the Cougars with 2.9 assists per game, however Musolff has decided to move her to the off-guard spot to take advantage of her size and outside shooting. She led the Cougars with 29 three-pointers last season and averaged 6.5 points per game. The Cougars will also use freshman Vanessa Ayad (Fremont) at the point guard position. Ayad was an all-league shooting guard in high school, but is making the switch this season. In a sense, she will be trading spots with Jones. Musolff says, “She has a good attitude and is improving her ball handling. She is also a good defender.”
Off Guard- The Cougars have plenty of talent at the off-guard spot on the wing. 2009 starter Kathy Jones (Rocklin) will be joined by former league MVP Maria Woodruff (Mendocino HS) and Cheyanne Stevenson (Fresno). Musolff says of Woodruff, “She is a hard worker, good defender, a solid player. She does everything well.” The Cougars also expect Stevenson to play major minutes off the bench, but the consistency of her outside shot will be the key to her playing time. Musolff says, “She is a hard worker and we expect her to contribute.”
Small Forward- Woodruff and Jones can make the transition to small forward if needed, but Musolff expects to have former 1st team all league selection Raleigh O’Brien (Oakdale HS) playing opposite the off-guard spot. The Cougars expect O’Brien to score both inside and outside and finish on the fast breaks. Musolff says, ”She is athletic and intense and knows the game. She is one of our hardest workers.” The Cougars will also use Shannon Daly (Redlands) and In Ian Cheong (Macau, China) at either the wing or as undersized power forwards. Daly is a good passer and can take another small forward into the paint and score, while Cheong is still making the transition to the American game. She is picking up the terms and learning quick, but it is her first step on the drive that could translate into instant offense off then bench for the Cougars.
Power Forward- The Cougars are deep and talented at the power forward position with 2009 All-WSC Honorable Mention selection Kayla Cribbs (Sutter Creek), fellow sophomore Lauren Maurer (Colfax HS) as well as newcomer Sarah Daniel (Fairfax). Cribbs will, once again, begin the season late after finishing the volleyball season. Cribbs started 20 games last year and led the Cougars with 8.2 rebounds per game, while also adding 8.9 points per game. Maurer broke her foot in the seventh game of the season and returned for two games late in the season before injuring it again, but she is ready for her sophomore campaign. She averaged 10.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game before the injury. She has also added a three-point shot to her repertoire. She and Cribbs add defense, rebounding and leadership on the floor. Daniel can play inside or outside and will help lead the fast break. She is bouncing back from a torn biceps muscle, but should be ready for the season.
Center- Sophomore Valerie Gee (Madera: Yosemite HS) has the size and strength to dominate on the inside. She averaged 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game last season. Newcomer Erika Wilhelm (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS) is a high-energy post player who will compliment the offensive minded Gee, who led the team in fouls last season. Wilhelm has been out of the game for two years, but remains a potential impact player on defense.

Notes- The Cougars fell to the Santa Barbara City Vaqueros despite being able to score at will inside. The Cougars strength is their frontcourt and all three of their post players were able to score in double figures- led by Center Valerie Gee' season-high 18 points. The Cougars were within one of the Vaqueros, 20-19, late in the first half, but then Santa Barbara turned up there press. The Cougars backcourt combined for 24 of the teams 31 turnovers and the easy points allowed the Vaqueros to pull away fro the 80-57 win. The Cougars are now 415 on the year and 1-5 in Western State Conference play.

Notes- The Cuesta Women's Basketball jumped out to a 28-9 lead in the first 12 minutes of their first Western State Conference game of the 2010 season. The Cougars had lost to Pierce, by 18 points, in their first encounter at Cuesta's Conoco/Phillips Tournament in December and appeared to be ready to turn the tables. However Pierce brought Tess Williams off the bench at that point and she proceeded to have her way with the Cougars. Williams scored a game-high 28 points over the last 28 minutes of the game and helped the Brahmas take the lead for good with seven minutes left in the game. The Cougars are now 3-11 on the year and 0-1 in the WSC,

Guard Alex Shew came off the bench to spark Porterville with 21 first half points and she led all scorers with 29 points in the game. Cuesta had its best shooting game of the year and set a school record with a perfect 18- for -18 night from the free throw line. The Cougars cracked the 50-point mark for the first time this season, but their drought at the end of the first half cost them the game. The Cougars pulled within nine points late in the game, but the Pirates maintained their halftime lead on Lisa Lopez's three-pointer at the buzzer. Freshman Raleigh O'Brien led the Cougars with a season-high 22 points in the loss. The Cougars are now 1-3 on the year, while the win brings the Pirates up to 1-2.

Next- Cuesta will host Cabrillo at 2 PM this Saturday, November 21
