Season PreviewIt’s Barba-Time for Cuesta Women’s Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO (November 9, 2011)— The Cuesta faithful are excited to see what second-year Coach Ron Barba (5-20/2nd year) has in store for them this season. Barba was hired as Cuesta second women’s basketball coach a full six months after founding Coach Ed Musolff had ended his 30-year tenure and with little time to recruit for the 2010-11 season. Barba struggled to collect five players after starting in August, but hustled to present a squad of ten in time for November’s tip off. The Cougars won on opening night, but only once more in their next 12 games. The Cougars began conference play in January and the team started to come to together and offered a glimpse of what is expected this season. The Cougars tied for 5th place in the Western State Conference with a 3-9 mark in the seven-team loop, but they posted near upsets against all four WSC’s playoff bound teams. The Cougars dropped their scoring deficit from 22 points in the first round of WSC play to only 7 points in their second swing through the loop. Coach Barba returns only two players from his first squad, but they were both all-WSC selections. The duo joins a dozen members of his first recruiting class to create an immediate contender. Barba says, “We can score and have more depth, but we really need to concentrate on defense.” The Cougars allowed 70 points per game in 2010-11, which is the most allowed by a Cuesta team since complete records began in 1999. However, on the other end of the court, only three Cuesta teams during that span scored more than the 59.4 points per game the Cougars averaged last season; and they did not outscore them by much- 2002 (64.5 ppg), 2008 (62.9) and 2006 (59.8). Coincidently those teams are the last three Cuesta squads to reach the post-season. Coach Barba understands that more than half of the WSC went to the post-season in 2010-11 and will prepare his team for conference play starting in January. In the meantime the Cougars are gearing up for their pre-conference schedule and getting better every week. Barba says of his first team of recruits, “The key to the season is chemistry. We have individual talent, but we must believe in our teammates.” A high scoring Cuesta team that focuses on defense and teamwork should create an exciting winter in the Cuesta Gym, which has all the probability of stretching into the spring and post-season play. The Cougars will begin their season in Costa Mesa this Friday in the Orange Coast Crossover Tournament. The Cougars play host Orange Coast at 7 PM on Friday and Palomar at Noon on Saturday. The Cougars first home game is scheduled for November 15 against Porterville (6 PM). Below is a breakdown of the Cougars Roster. Point Guard- PAC 7 Defensive Player of the Year Katie Rodriguez (Orcutt: Righetti HS) and All-Fresno County Guard Jordan Reid (Caruthers HS) serve as the Cougars primary point guards, while Western Sierra League First Teamer Giavanna DeFrancesco (Firebaugh) is expected to work her way into the system. Rodriguez has had a great pre-season and the Cougars have high expectations for her on both sides of the floor. Coach Ron Barba says, “She is going to be an impact player. She is a great defender and can shoot from anywhere.” Reid set school records for points and assists at Caruthers High and will ignite the Cougars’ offense. Barba says, “She controls the offense and could be a very pleasant surprise. She is a good ball handler and can hit the jumper.” DeFrancesco adds more speed to the Cougars backcourt. Barba says, “She needs experience. She is determined to improve.” 2011 starter Rachael Warner (Angles Camp) has just completed a standout soccer season, however she has not made any ovations toward returning to basketball. She set a school record for assists last season. Now the Cougars are counting on three freshmen to run the show. Off Guard- All Valley selection Courtney Chadwick (Wildomar) is a pure shooter. She is the Cougars’ top long-range threat and will provide instant offense for the Cougars. Coach Barba says, “She will keep them (opponents) honest.” All Fresno County pick Heather Loflin (Caruthers HS) can step in and provide defense when the Cougars need it. Barba says, “She works hard and is a tenacious defender.” Unfortunately the Cougars will have to wait for Loflin, who is nursing a pre-season injury. Loflin’s high school teammate Chelsea Dewey (Caruthers HS) can also help on the defensive end. An all-league choice, Dewey is a physical defender and owns a strong transition game. Barba says, “She works really hard and is learning the system.” The Cougars also have local product Justine Figuracion (Lompoc: SLO HS). Figuracion was listed as a forward in high school, but will play on the wing for the Cougars. Small Forward- The Cougars will not go very many minutes without 2011 All Western State Conference Forward Anika Bauermeister (Dusseldorf, Germany) on the floor. The six-footer can be plugged into any spot on the floor, but will probably come off the wing. Barba says, “She has good court vision, a good quick first step and can drive and score.” In 2011 Bauermeister was second on the team with 12.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. She is poised for a big sophomore campaign. Bauermeister can dominate a game, as displayed in the Cougars’ final win of 2011. She posted a near triple double with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists in the Cougars’ win over local rival Allan Hancock. All-CIF selection Alyssa Palma (Atascadero HS) will play on the wing as either a guard or small forward. Barba says, “She has a good shot and is a good passer. She has the most potential (on the team). Consistency is the key” Power Forward- 2011 All Western State Conference First Teamer Kati Sheldon (Paso Robles HS) is set for another huge season. The undersized power forward has a repertoire of moves that make her tough to stop in the post and can also knockdown a three-pointer. Add her rebounding prowess and a year of experience and the Cougars are immediate contenders. Sheldon averaged a double-double last season, 15.8 points and 10.9 rebounds per game, and Coach Barba says, “She developed more patience and could have a monster year.” Sheldon is also serves as the Cougars’ Team Captain. Freshman Emily McCullah (Bakersfield HS) is the physical interior defender; strong rebounder and low post presence the Cougars will need in their quest for a conference title. Center- All SLO County choice Aria Johnson (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS) returns to SLO after a year at Colorado State. Barba has high hopes for the former Pirate. He says, “She is our quickest post. She has size, speed; she’s physical and a very hard worker. She could be a double-double player.” Johnson will share the post with Sadie Fulp (Santa Maria: Righetti HS), who is an intimidating defensive presence and effective scorer on offense. Barba says, “She is very good around the basket and adds a nice hook shot. She is our best shot blocker.”
