Cuesta Softball Opens 30th Season in Reedley this Thursday

SAN LUIS OBISPO (January 26, 2009)—The Cuesta Softball team kicks off the 2009 campaign with a roster filled with talent, but short on experience. The Cougars return only two players from last season’s Western State Conference title team, but Coach Sara Clarin (55-39/ 3rd year) says, “This is our best team across the board.” The Cougars 13 freshmen will have some big shoes to fill this season and they are ready to do their best for Cuesta. One of the things Coach Clarin likes about this year’s squad is where they are from, she says, “We have lots of local kids. They are more invested and are proud to be here. They have a real tie to the community.” The Cougars have been working hard this spring and with their youthful enthusiasm and talent Cuesta plans to be looking at its ninth consecutive playoff berth.
The Cougars will begin their season this Thursday in Reedley. They will play a doubleheader with the Reedley Tigers beginning at noon. The Cougars home opener with Riverside this Saturday will be another twinbill also beginning at noon.

Pitchers
The Cuesta pitching staff will begin with freshman right-hander Stacie Salazar (Paso Robles HS), the 2008 SLO County Pitcher of the Year. Salazar will be a presence on the mound for the Cougars and despite being a freshman she comes to Cuesta with plenty of softball experience. Coach Clarin says, “She has great stuff and will keep hitters off balance. She brings a lot of intensity.” The Cougars will also use sophomore righty Chelsie Rodriguez (Pismo Beach: Arroyo Grande HS) in the pitching circle. Rodriguez was stuck behind two all-WSC 1st Team pitchers last season and Coach Clarin says, “She will see more time this year. She is very self-motivated and has improved her control and location.” Rodriguez can also put a lot of heat on the ball and struckout 15 batters in 26.1 innings. She was 2-1 with a 1.06 ERA.

Catcher
Converted Third Basemen Breanan Silzer (Templeton HS) and Nicole Monroe (SLO HS) have both made the move behind the plate to fill a gap for the Cougars. Silzer, the sister of former Cuesta all-conference basketball player Chris Silzer, has a good command of the game. Coach Clarin calls her a “Field General”. She is also a good contact hitter with a good glove. Monroe will play behind the plate or either infield corner. She is one of the Cougars most athletic players and brings a good bat, glove and arm to the field. Coach Clarin says, “She can hit in bunches.”

First Base
Two-time All-SLO County selection Nicole Monroe (SLO HS) is a smooth fielder at first base and will begin the season there, while Freshman Sam Hughes (Santa Maria: St Joseph) recovers from an arm injury. The Cougars will also have All SLO County choice Rachel Myers (Oceano: Coastal Christian) at first as she becomes more familiar with the collegiate game.

Second Base
Freshman Brittani Gregory (Bakersfield: Arroyo Grande HS) has great range and hands at second base and is always looking to get better. She also brings a good lefty bat and plenty of speed. Renee Moreno (Arroyo Grande HS) adds another good glove to the infield. Jess Munoz (West Covina: Paso Robles HS) can also play second base if needed.

Third Base
Three-time All SLO County choice Alyssa Giordanengo (Pismo Beach: Arroyo Grande HS) won the battle at third base. Coach Clarin moved her 2008 all-WSC 1st Team Third Baseman to shortstop and noted, “I had the three best third baseman in the county from last year on my team.” Giordanengo has all the tools to play the hot corner. She is athletic has a good glove and a strong arm. She is also expected to bat in the middle of the line up. Freshmen Breanan Silzer (Templeton HS) and Nicole Monroe (SLO HS) will both have a home in the infield, but can play third if needed. Fellow freshman Drew Woods (Turlock HS) will also play third base.

Shortstop
2008 All Western State Conference Third Baseman Lauren Vancil (Oceanside: Fallbrook HS) will take a step to her left to replace two-time All State Shortstop Danielle Crawford. Vancil has always been a smooth fielder and her range in the middle of the infield is improving, but mostly as a sophomore she brings composure and maturity as the leader of the infield. Vancil will also be expected to produce in the batting order for the Cougars. She scored a team-high 32 runs and drove in a team-high 25 RBI in 2008. She was also second on the team with a .374 batting average, but led the squad in both slugging (.568) and on-base percentage (.439). Two-time All CIF pick Jess Munoz (West Covina: Paso Robles HS) and Drew Woods (Turlock HS) can also play shortstop.

Leftfield
All CIF selection Kelly Brown (Lompoc: Cabrillo HS) is a true outfielder and will run down anything pulled in the air. She will also add speed and good placement hitting as a lefty bat in the line-up.

Centerfield
Freshman Alex Ramirez (Paso Robles: Cornerstone) is the fastest player that Coach Clarin has seen in her four years at Cuesta. She says, “Alex will wreak havoc with her speed and break the school record for stolen bases.” All Conference selection Erika Campbell set the current record for stolen bases in 2004; she stole 30 basses that season. Ramirez also takes advantage of her speed as a left-handed hitter and can squeeze a base hit out of any contact. Clarin also noted that in the field she gets great reads off the bat and is very quick to the ball.

Rightfield
Sophomore Chelsie Rodriguez (Pismo Beach: Arroyo Grande HS), when she isn’t in the pitching circle, will make the transition from leftfield to rightfield. She is a very solid outfielder, but Clarin made the move to save her for pitching and to take advantage of the speed of Brown and Ramirez. Rodriguez’s bat will be especially important for the Cougars this year. She hit .313 last season and was second on the team with 24 RBI. She also led the team with 13 doubles. Freshman Drew Woods (Turlock HS) with her speed and arm will take over in rightfield when Rodriguez is pitching to give the Cougars speed at all three spots and All Napa County pick Elizabeth Hardin (St Helena HS) will add outfield depth.

Notes- The Cuesta Cougars played their final home games of the 2009 season and split the twinbill with West Hills. Errors were once again the plagued the Cougars and led to a game one loss. On the day the Cougars did not allow an earned run, despite the fact that the Falcons scored four times in the two games. Cuesta Pitcher Chelsie Rodriguez began the opener with five scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth inning. Rodriguez walked leadoff batter Breana Barnum, but served up a double-play ball on the next pitch only to have the overthrow fly into right field and give each runner three free bases. The error allowed one runner to score and moved another to third base. Rodriguez went back to work and coaxed a groundout to shortstop on the next pitch and held the runner at third, before walking the next batter, Marissa Quesada. Quesada stole second as Rodriguez struckout Juana Torres for the second out. With two outs the Falcons managed back-to-back RBI base-hits to run their lead to 3-0 before the end of the inning. The Cougars got on the scoreboard the next inning on Rodriguez's RBI base-hit, but entered the bottom of the 7th down by two. Designated Hitter Nicole Monroe led off that inning with a double and Liz Harden took over as her pinch runner. Sam Hughes' sacrifice hit moved Hardin to third and she scored on a base-hit by Kelly Brown. Second Baseman Brittani Gregory and Centerfielder Alex Ramirez both walked to load the bases with only one out. Reliever Allyson Galvan, who issued the walk to Ramirez, got out of the jam and ended the inning and the game with a strikeout and a comebacker.
In Game 2, a two-out double in the third inning by Centerfielder Gaby Brixey off Cuesta Starter Stacie Salazar was followed by a passed ball that moved her to third. Brixey scored on an infield hit as Veronica Montijo beat out the throw at first. The run gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead and once again forced the Cougars to play from behind. An extra base hit in each of the next two innings kept the Cougars in the game. Rightfielder Chelsie Rodriguez led off the fourth inning with a base-hit and then scored on Nicole Monroe's second double of the day to tie the game. In the fifth inning Designated Hitter Drew Woods smacked a one-out base-hit and then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Woods scored the eventual winning-run on Shortstop Lauren Vancil's double to provide the 2-1 decision. Salazar held on the rest of the way and did not allow another hit, while striking out ten on the day. The Cougars fielding has been a concern all season long. The Cougars have played 43 games this season and committed 80 miscues in the field, which has led to 65 unearned runs. The Cougars are now 23-20 overall.

Next- Cuesta will wrap up the regular season in Woodland Hills on Tuesday (2:30). The Cougars must beat Pierce in their final Western State Conference game and hope that Santa Barbara to beat Ventura to earn one of the WSC's two automatic playoff bids. Moorpark has already clinched the WSC crown and ended the Cougars' plans to repeat as the loop's champions.

Notes- Cuesta remained mathematically alive for a playoff spot, awarded to first or second place in the conference, with their fifth straight Western State Conference victory. Sophomore Pitcher Chelsie Rodriguez authored a complete game shutout in the opener and then picked up a relief win in the nightcap. Rodriguez has gone 9-2 since losing her first seven decisions of the season. She also drove in a run in the first inning of Game 1 to provide all the offense she would need in the 1-0 win. In Game 2 the Cougars put together a seven-run third inning jump out to a huge lead, but the Vaqueros edged back and eventually tied the game in the seventh inning. Rodriguez held them scoreless in the 8th inning and then led off the bottom of the 8th with a walk for the Cougars. Pinch runner Kelly Brown replaced Rodriguez at first and scored on Sam Hughes base-hit for the 8-7 win. The Cougars are now 22-19 overall and 15-8 against the WSC.

Next- The Cuesta Softball team remained mathematically alive in an attempt to defend its 2008 Western State Conference title. The Cougars knocked off first place Moorpark today, 10-9, to pull within three games of the Raiders in the WSC standings with three games to play. Moorpark took advantage of six Cuesta errors on the day and took an early lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. However the Cougars were also able took advantage of a Raider miscue that kept the second inning alive long enough for 2008 All-WSC First Team Shortstop Lauren Vancil to give the Cougars the lead for good with a grand slam home run. Moorpark crept back into the game by closing to 6-5 in the fourth inning, but doubles by Brittani Gregory and Nicole Monroe in the bottom of that inning led to four runs and increased the Cougars lead to 10-5. Two more Cuesta errors in the sixth inning closed the gap to two runs and the Cougars replaced Starting Pitcher Chelsie Rodriguez with Stacie Salazar. Salazar got the Cougars out of the jam in the sixth, but had trouble closing out her first save of the year in the seventh inning. Salazar allowed back-to-back hits to lead off the inning, before striking out the third batter. She beaned the next batter to load the bases, but a strikeout and a pop out to first sealed the victory fro the Cougars.

Next- Cuesta will host Santa Barbara in a WSC doubleheader on Thursday (1/3 PM).

Notes- Allan Hancock Pitcher Jessica Garcia crushed a one-out fastball from Cuesta Pitcher Stacie Salazar over the leftfield fence in her first at bat and gave herself, and her team, a lead she would never relinquish. Salazar settled down and struckout four of the next six batters, but Garcia held the Cougars to two hits in the first five innings and maintained the advantage that her home run had provided her. In the sixth inning, a mixture of two Cuesta errors and three hits broke the game open for the Bulldogs, who took a 5-0 lead. The Cougars rallied for two runs in their half of the inning, but standout catches in the outfield by Centerfielder Elysha McClain and Leftfielder Kayla Simkins squelched the rally. The Bulldogs held on for the 5-2 win and the Cougars fell to 16-17 overall and 10-8 in the WSC.

The Cougars rallied in their final at bat and finally knocked out Starting Pitcher Jen Juarez. The Cougars scored three time and pulled within a run, but Reliever Angela Ayala coaxed a game ending ground ball with two runners on to save the game for the Pirates.
In Game 2 the Pirates took another early lead, but Cuesta Pitcher Chelsie Rodriguez kept her composure after an error in the second inning led to a pair of Ventura runs. The Bucs pushed another run across in the third, but Rodriguez allowed only one more base runner over the next three innings as the Cougars made their comeback. Second Baseman Brittani Gregory led off the bottom of the third with a double and she and Leftfielder Kelly Brown both scored on Shortstop Lauren Vancil's base-hit to close the gap to one run. The Cougars tied the game in the fourth inning after Designated Hitter Nicole Monroe led off with a walk and was replaced by Pinch Runner Renee Moreno. Moreno was plated by a base-hit by Centerfielder Alex Ramirez to even the contest at 3-3. The Cougars waited until the sixth inning to take the lead for good and secure the victory. Gregory came through again, she smacked a one-out triple and then scored on a groundout by Brown to provide the difference in the 4-3 win. The Cougars are 11-13 overall and 5-5 in the WSC play.

Citrus scored its first run of the game on an overthrow on Valerie Torres' steal of third base to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. In the fourth inning the Owls had the bases loaded after a walk, a bean and an error, when Salazar beaned Melissa Salas to add another run to the board. The next batter Danyelle Vasquez drove in two more runs after connecting on Citrus' first hit of the day. Vasquez later scored on a passed ball to complete a four-run inning. Cuesta in the meantime kept on getting hits and stranding runners. They picked up their first run of the game in the second inning after bringing Rodriguez around following her one-out double, but still left two women on in that inning. They left two more on in the third and again in the fourth, although they also scored Alyssa Giordanengo on Brittani Gregory's RBI double. Notes- The Cuesta softball team struggled at the plate today with only four hits in two games. In Game 1 the Cougars entered the sixth inning leading 1-0, but the Sequoias pitching staff was still five outs away from authoring a no-hitter. Base-hits by Chelsie Rodriguez and Alyssa Giordenengo in the sixth inning led to three more Cuesta runs and provided the difference in the game. Cuesta Starter Stacie Salazar lost her shutout in the seventh inning, but picked up the complete game win, 4-1, by allowing only three hits and striking out five. In Game 2 the Giants came out swinging and scored a run off two hits in each of the first two innings off Starter Chelsie Rodriguez. Unfortunately while the Giants bats were heating up the Cougars' gloves were cooling off and the Cougars five errors led to two more runs. Cuesta, again, waited until the sixth inning to record a hit off Sequoias Pitcher Alycia Campos, but were unable to push a run across and were shutout, 4-0. The Cougars are now 3-3 on the year.

Next- The Cougars will host Citrus College on Thursday (2:30) in their Western State Conference opener.

Riverside took the lead with a six-run fourth inning and held on for two more frames until the game was called for darkness with a 10-5 win.
