Notes- Cuesta Softball ended its regular season with a two-game sweep
of the Moorpark Raiders. Cuesta Ace Elyssa Fox authored her 10th
complete game shutout of the year to win the opener 8-0 and in the
second game 2007 All-WSC Pitcher Sara Clinton picked a 9-1 win. Both
games were called before the final frame in accordance with the Western
State Conference run rule (8-run lead after 5 innings). Designated
Hitter Chelsie Rodriguez and Third Baseman Lauren Vancil starred at the
plate for the Cougars. Rodriguez was 4-for-7 and drove in six runs
with a pair of doubles and a home run on the day. Vancil was 3-for-6
and scored five times and drove in a pair. The Cougars won the 2008
Western State Conference title with a 19-6 record against the loop and
advanced to the playoffs for the eighth consecutive year with a 29-18
overall record.
Next- The Cougars will play a first round playoff series next Saturday

Notes- The Cuesta Softball team clinched at least a piece of the 2008 Western State Conference title with a 9-1 run-rule win over LA Pierce. The Cougars fell behind early when the Brahmas pushed across an unearned run in the first inning, but Cuesta took the lead for good on a two-RBI double by Shortstop Danielle Crawford in the second inning. In the third inning Danielle Flores crushed a two-run home run to build the lead to 5-1 and Lauren Vancil's solo home run sparked a four-run fifth inning to provide the Cougars with the necessary eight-run lead to earn the run-rule. Leftfielder Sara Clinton's two-out base-hit drove in Jenna Robinson with deciding clinching run to end the four-run fifth inning. Pitcher Elyssa Fox hurled a complete game for the Cougars and allowed only two-hits for her 18th win of the year. This is the Cougars seventh conference title since the program began in 1980 and the first under second year Head Coach Sara Clarin.
Next- Cuesta will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader at home next Tuesday with Moorpark. Tuesday will be Sophomore Day with Game 1 beginning at 1 PM.

Notes- Local rival Allan Hancock nearly pulled off the upset against first place Cuesta College. The Cougars and the 1-29 Bulldogs represent both ends of the Western State Conference standings, however it took eleven innings to sort out todays game. The Cougars were the first to score when Jewls Hall came around on a Chelsie Rodriguez double in the first inning. However the Bulldogs evened things up with a two-out steal of home by Monique Aguirre in the second inning. It took nine more innings before anyone could score another run. Cuesta's Jenna Robinson began the 11th inning at second base according to the WSC tie-breaker rule and scored on a leadoff base-hit by Courtney Minton. Cuesta's Elyssa Fox received the winning decision after striking out ten batters in six innings of perfect relief work. The Cougars magic are in first place in the WSC with a 15-5 mark against the circuit. They are 25-13 overall.

Notes: Game 1 of the doubleheader was a scoreless tie until Designated Hitter Elyse Garza took the game into her own hands. Garza led off the fifth inning with a base hit and then as Danielle Crawford prepared to bunt her over Garza took off for second and the took a sharp turn left, as Crawford took a called strike, and headed to an unguarded third base without breaking stride. Crawford then singled to left to drive in Garza with the games determining run. The Cougars added six more runs in the sixth thanks to three Ventura errors. Freshman Pitcher Elyssa Fox was working on a no-hitter into the final frame, but with one out Sara Araiza blooped a base-hit just out of the reach of Cuesta Shortstop Danielle Crawford. Fox ended with an one-hitter and 11 strikeouts for the 7-0 win.

Notes: 2007 All-WSC Hurler Sara Clinton scored the only run of the game to preserve her complete game shutout. Clinton smacked a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth and then stole second base to place herself in scoring position for batter Chelsie Rodriguez. Rodriguez grounded to first, but reached on an error by Ventura First Baseman Sara Araiza. Clinton took off on contact and crossed an unguarded home plate on the error for the deciding run. Ventura out-hit the Cougars three-to-two, but Clinton managed to keep the Pirates from getting to the plate. The victory was Clinton's second straight complete game shutout. She blanked Portervile last Saturday at the Bash at Buchanan Tournament.

Notes: Cuesta scored two runs in the first inning on three hits to take
an early lead on Santa Barbara City, but that was it for the offense
and Cuesta managed only two more hits in the game. The Vaqueros came
back to tie the game in the top of the second and then took the lead
for good in the fifth inning. Santa Barbara increased its lead in the
Western State Conference to a 1.5 games over Cuesta with the victory.
2007 All-WSC 1st Teamer Sara Clinton led the Cougars with two hits and
scored their first run of the day. Clinton also relieved Starter
Elyssa Fox in the fifth inning, after Fox gave up a pair of hits to
begin the inning. Both of those runs scored, on an error and a
sacrifice fly, before Clinton could get out of the jam. Fox came back
in for Clinton in the sixth inning after the Vaqueros scored four more
runs and increased their lead to 8-2.
Next: Cuesta will play in the Bash at Buchanan this weekend in Fresno.
They will host Ventura in a WSC Twinbill next Tuesday.

Notes: A pair of errors in the second inning and a punchless offense
left the Cougars on the wrong end of their second straight shutout.
2007 All_WSC 1st Team Pitcher Sara Clinton was saddled with the loss
despite allowing only one earned run in five innings of work. Freshman
First Baseman Jenna Robinson provided the bulk of the Cougars offense.
She was 2-for-2, with a single and a double and also drew a walk, but
she was left stranded on the basepaths all three times. The Cougars
only other hit was a two-out double by Lindsey Thompson in the fifth
inning, but again the Cougars could not get her to the plate. The
Cougars are now 7-8 on the year and 3-4 against the WSC circuit.

Notes: The Cougars played their first game since February 19th and
came away with a 3-0 win over LA Mission. The Cougars jumped and
scored three runs in the first inning and then cruised behind the
mastery of pitcher Elyssa Fox, who authored her fourth complete game
shut out of the year. Elyse Garza got things started in the first
inning with a one-out double. She then stole third and scored on a
base-hit by Danielle Crawford. Then Danielle Flores smacked a base-hit
and both she and Crawford moved into scoring position on Chelsie
Rodriguez's ground out. Crawford went on to score on a wild pitch and
Flores scored the Cougars third run on Jenna Robinson's single. The
Eagles put five runners on base, but none of them reached second base.
The Cougars are now 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the Western State
Conference.

Notes: Cuesta fell back to .500 with a one-run loss in a Western State Conference Inter-Divisional game against Glendale. The Cougars out-hit the Vaqueros 9-7 and had 13 base runners compared to the Vaqueros eight. The key play was a misplayed double play ball by Shortstop Danielle Crawford and Second Baseman Jewls Hall in the top of the third that gave the Vaqueros two base runners and no outs. Glendale eventually converted those into a pair unearned runs and took a decisive 3-1 lead. The Cougars had their chances to score, but stranded twice as many base runners as the Vaqueros, 10-5, in the loss. Freshman Pitcher Elyssa Fox relieved starter Sara Clinton in the 5th inning and struckout out six of the eight batters she faced. The Cougars are 5-5 overall and 1-1 against the WSC.
Next: Cuesta will continue their swing through the WSC South Division with a game at Citrus College on Tuesday (2:30)
2008 Preview
Cuesta Softball Opens this 2008 in Visalia this Thursday
SAN LUIS OBISPO (January 29, 2008)—The Cuesta Softball team continues to climb the State rankings. The Cougars have not finished lower than second in the Western State Conference since 2000. Last year the Cougars installed former Cal Poly Star Sara Clarin as the interim head coach and after leading the Cougars to second place in the Western State Conference and into the playoffs Athletic Director Bob Mariucci removed the interim label and named her the head coach. Clarin will have six players back from her first year, including 2007 WSC Player of the Year Danielle Crawford (Pismo Beach: Buchanan HS). Clarin feels that her returning six sophomores will be major factors in this team’s success, she says, “Our six sophomores are good leaders, understand what is expected of them and have set goals as a team.” The Cougars also have a good group of freshmen and they will join the veterans as they push towards a conference title and another playoff berth.
The Cougars will begin their season this Thursday in Visalia. They will play a doubleheader with the College of the Sequoias beginning at noon. The Cougars hope opener with Riverside scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed until March 22nd. The Cougars will instead host Reedley on February 5th for their home opener.
Pitchers
2007 All Western State Conference First Team selection Sara Clinton (Clovis) returns to the pitching circle for the Cougars along with a pair of hard-throwing freshman. Clinton was the Cougars’ ace last year and has a lot of command and poise in the pitching circle. Last year her bloated earned run average of 3.26, still the best on the team, was overshadowed by her 15 wins and her ability to make big pitches. When Clinton is not pitching this year she will continue to be a threat at the plate and play in the outfield. Last year she hit .333 and was second on the team with 10 stolen bases. Freshman Elyssa Fox (Fallbrook HS) is a two-time All Avocado League choice and is expected to develop into a dominating pitcher. Fox will battle every game with an over-powing fastball, but her success will be determined by how well she hits her spots. Fellow freshman Chelsie Rodriguez (Carmichael: Arroyo Grande HS) is the sister of former Cuesta pitching star CJ Harmon, who won 15 games and set a school record with seven saves in 2001. Rodriguez can pitch or play first base. She is physically strong and provides the Cougars with a hard thrower and a power hitter.
Catcher
Sophomore Courtney Minton (Paso Robles: Templeton HS) spent the fall of her freshman year at San Francisco State and showed up just in time for Cuesta’s season. A natural catcher, Minton made the transition to first base because sophomore Olivia Martinez was already entrenched behind the plate. Minton started slowly, but ended up hitting .339 with four home runs. Coach Clarin says that she will be much more comfortable back behind the plate this year and expects her to have more consistency at the plate. Minton is a good handle of pitchers and her softball knowledge will give the Cougars an extra edge. Freshman Alex Sweeney (Arroyo Grande HS) is a very athletic player and will learn a lot by playing behind Minton. She will also allow the Cougars to rest Minton or move her to first base for a rest. Freshman Keryn Kerns (Atascadero HS) will also be able to catch if needed.
First Base
Former All-SLO Country Jenna Robinson (Morro Bay HS) will begin the season at first base, but she is still adjusting to the collegiate game. Clarin says, “She is very intense, works hard and wants to get better.” Freshmen Chelsie Rodriguez (Carmichael: Arroyo Grande HS) and Courtney Minton (Paso Robles: Templeton HS), who earned 2007 All-WSC honors there last year, will both see time at first base. Sophomore Jules Hall (Hollister) and freshman Keryn Kerns (Atascadero HS) can also fill in if needed.
Second Base
Sophomores Jules Hall (Hollister) and Sara Clinton (Clovis) have both filed in at second base, but Hall will get the first call to start the season if freshman Lauren Vancil (Fallbrook HS) doesn’t slide over from the hot corner. Hall redshirted last year after seeing limited playing time in 2006. Clarin says, “She is a mature player and knows the system. She is fundamentally sound, which allow us to move her around.” Hall saw action in only ten games as a freshman, but hit .500 in her limited at bats. She is expected to be a tough out. Clinton will probably only move into the infield in an emergency, she is better suited to the outfield, when she is not pitching. Vancil has a good glove and quick hands. She will have a home somewhere in the infield.
Third Base
Lauren Vancil (Fallbrook HS) is slated to begin the season at third base, but fellow freshman Lindsey Thompson (Paso Robles HS) may force her to move across the diamond. Thompson is one of the best raw athletes on the team and will take over one of the corners. She should also be a solid hitter for the Cougars, but she needs to overcome some of her preseason injuries. Keryn Kerns (Atascadero HS) has a good glove and strong arm and is also very athletic. The two-time All SLO Country selection should fill one of the corner infield positions or move to the outfield. She is also expected to hit for power.
Shortstop
2007 Western State Conference Player of the Year Danielle Crawford (Pismo beach: Buchanan HS) played all four of the infield positions last year, but found a home at shortstop. Last year, expected starting shortstop Krista Simko accepted a scholarship to CSU Northridge just before the start of 2007 campaign and the Cougars tried several players in her spot before Coach Clarin just decided to plug in her best athlete, Crawford. Once there Crawford made a home for herself and now Clair says, “She has taken to the position and is a smarter and more polished player.” Crawford will anchor the Cougars infield and the batting order. She was named to the 2007 All State Team after hitting .414 and driving in 38 runs.
Outfield
Taft transfer Danielle Flores (Bakersfield) while Sara Clinton (Clovis), Keryn Kerns (Atascadero HS), Jules Hall (Hollister) and Elyse Garza (Three Rivers) share the rest of the yard. Flores will play centerfield for the Cougars and run the outfield. She also adds good gap power to the Cougars’ line-up. Clinton, Kerns or Hall will be in the outfield on a regular basis, while Garza may begin the season as a starter, she be primarily used to add speed and defense in the late innings. Garza is switching to the left side of the plate to tray and take advantage of her speed. She scored 14 runs as a pinch runner last season.
