CROSS COUNTRY-
Harriers Compete at State Meet- Barman Favorite for Women
SAN LUIS OBISPO (November 16, 2009)- This Week: The Cuesta Cross Country teams will race in the 2009 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Cross Country Championships on November 21st. The meet will be held at Fresno’s Woodward Park, where the Cougars competed on September 12th in the State Preview Meet. The men finished 16th in that meet, while the women were more competitive in 8th place. Both teams have improved tremendously since the early days of the season, in addition the women have enjoyed the return of 2009 Western State Conference Champion Kelly Barman (New Mexico), who did not compete on September 12th. The women’s 2009 State Meet race is scheduled for 10 AM and the men will follow at 10:45.
Last week: The Cuesta Cross Country teams took last week off to prepare for the 2009 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Cross Country Championships on November 21st.
Notes: Freshman Kelly Barman (New Mexico) finished 2nd at the 2009 Southern California Regional Cross Country Championships and led the women’s team back to the state meet. Barman cleared the 18-minute barrier for the first time this season with a blazing time of 17:24. She is one of the favorites to win this Saturday and is also expected to become the seventh female harrier in Cuesta history to be named to the All State team. Cuesta began keeping times on record in 1996 and the best time at a State Meet by a Cuesta runner, since that time, is Christina Reyes’ 18:09 in 2003. Reyes finished third that year, while Barman has beaten that time in all but one of her races this year. >>top
SOCCER-
Soccer Ends Season at Home Against Bulldogs
SAN LUIS OBISPO (November 10, 2009)- Last Week: The Cuesta Women’s Soccer team closed out its 2009 schedule last week with a pair of Western State Conference games. The Cougars lost in Santa Barbara on Tuesday, 1-0, and then ended their season at home against local rival Allan Hancock. The Cuesta Cougars spent almost entire game against the Allan Hancock on the offensive end of the pitch, but it took until the final few minutes of each half to hit the back of the nets. The Cougars got the goals they needed to win their final game of the year, but after out-shooting the Allan Hancock Bulldogs 22-1 the game appeared closer than play on the field indicated. The final whistle signaled the end of the Cougars and Bulldogs 2009 campaigns. Cuesta finished with a 7-11-3 overall record and in 4th place in the Western State Conference.
Last week: No Contests, season over.
Notes:The Cougars offense struggled this season and they scored on 20 goals in their 19 games. In fact, freshman Sarah Wheeler (Pacific Grove HS) led the Cougars with only five goals this season. Sophomore Kaytlyn Johnson (Vacaville) scored only two goals this season, after leading the team with 13 goals as a freshman. Her career total of 15 goals ranks #7 all time at Cuesta, but was not in range of Angie Mouw’s (2000-01) school record of 30 career goals. Johnson was named to the 2008 All-WSC Second team and was one of four returning all conference players on the squad. >>top

SAN LUIS OBISPO (November 16, 2009)- Last Week: The Cuesta Men’s Water Polo team were the #6 seed in the 2009 Southern California Regional Playoffs and after a first round bye they drew Western State Conference rival and #3 seed Ventura in Friday’s elimination game. The Pirates had beaten the Cougars four teams during the 2009 season and have the Cougars had never been closer than four goals in any of those contests and lost one game by nine goals. That all change on Friday as the Cougars came from behind twice to shock the Pirates in a double overtime thriller, 13-12. The win sent the Cougars to the regional finals the next day, where they needed to win one more game to return to the State Finals for the first time since 2006. The Cougars lost to #2 seed Long Beach, 17-6, in the semi-finals and then to #4 seed Riverside, 11-8, in the third place game and were knocked out of the post-season. The Cougars ended the year with a 20-14 record.

W WATER POLO-
Cuesta Women’s Polo Finish 3rd in WSC- Schuler Wins #200
SAN LUIS OBISPO (November 10, 2009)- Last Week: The Cuesta Women’s Water Polo team finished in third place at the 2009 Western State Conference Championships. They entered the event as the #2-seed and lost to #2-seed Citrus, 10-6, in the semi-final. The Cougars won the third place game, 19-12, over #5-seed Santa Monica, who upset #4-seed LA Valley in the first round. The Cougars ended the season with a 12-19 overall record. The Cougars victory over Santa Monica was the 11-year old program’s 200th win. Coach Pete Schuler has led the program since its inception in 1999 and turned the program into a perennial contender. The Cougars have won four conference titles and reached the post-season six times. The Cougars 43-11 record against the Western State Conference is the top mark among the circuit’s teams. Coach Schuler said, “This win took a long time, a lot longer than I expected at the start of the year. We had a very strong team to begin the season, but did not have an experienced goaltender. We converted three former field players to fill that spot this season, but all of them missed games because of injuries. We averaged 10 goals a game on offense for only the fourth time in my eleven years, but allowed a school record 12 goals per game. Defense wins championships and we just did not have the personnel to get the job done this year, but I am glad that the season did not end at 199. The team worked hard all season and deserved to get the program to this milestone.”
Last week: No Contests- Season Over
Notes: First-year player Ashley Smith (Lompoc: Cabrillo HS) and 2008 All Southern California Second Teamer Morgan Thompson (Paso Robles HS) both etched their names into the Cuesta record book last weekend. Smith broke Ashley de Goede’s 2006 record for ejections drawn in a season and Thompson broke her own single season scoring record. Smith ended the season with 45 ejections drawn to lead the Cougars to a school record 210 power plays. She also led the team with 37 assists, while adding 53 goals of her own. Thompson scored 97 goals this season to break her record of 95 set last season. She also led the team with 55 steals. Thompson holds the Cuesta career scoring mark with 192 goals. >>top
