Cate and Miller Earn Top Honors- 15 Cougars Earn All-WSC

SAN LUIS OBISPO (May 7, 2008)— The Cougars dominated the Western State Conference and won the conference title by four games over second place Ventura with a 21-4 record against the loop.  The Cougars led the conference in both team pitching (3.27 ERA) and hitting (.369 avg.) and because of that they had 16 players named to the 2008 All Western State Conference teams.  The Cougars were all over the 2008 All-WSC First Team with 10 players named to the squad, including WSC Player of the Year Quentin Cate (Cambria: SLO HS) and WSC Pitcher of the Year Patrick Haugen (Cayucos: Morro Bay HS).  Five more Cougars graced the 2008 All-WSC Second Team and Honorable Mention squads.
Coach Bob Miller earned 2008 WSC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Cougars to a WSC title for the fourth time and picking up the #2 seed in the 2008 Southern California Regional Playoffs.  Miller’s team posted a 30-13-1 record during the regular season to win his fourth conference crown in six years at the helm, but this was his first coach of the year award since his rookie season in 2003.  Miller is 175-82-2 at during his tenure at Cuesta.
Sophomore Quentin Cate (Cambria: SLO HS) won the Western State Conference Triple Crown and was unanimously named the loop’s player of the year.  In his 24 conference games Cate led the conference in home runs (11), runs batted in (45) and batting average (.485).  On the season Cate is the Cougars leading hitter, he is hitting .420, hit 14 home runs and driven in 60 runs.  Cate has also been a versatile fielder for the Cougars and has spent time at first base, third base and catcher.  He has also been named to the 2008 All State team.
Two-Time All WSC First Team Pitcher Patrick Haugen (Cayucos: Morro Bay HS) also shared WSC Pitcher of the Year honors with Santa Barbara’s Bryce Urhig.  Haugen leads the Cougars with a 10-3 record and has won his last seven starts.  He also leads the team with 79 strikeouts and has posted a 3.51 ERA.  Haugen ranks second all time at Cuesta with 19 career wins and 181 career strikeouts.
Two-Time All WSC First Team Pitcher Tyler Fick (Valencia: Hart HS) missed the 2007 season, but returned to the all-WSC 1st Team with a triumphant return from his elbow surgery.  Fick led the staff with a 3.18 ERA and posted a 7-2 record.
Catcher Brian Farris (Pasadena) was selected to the 2008 All-WSC First Team after earning honorable mention as a freshman in 2007.  Farris caught nearly every inning for the Cougars during WSC play and added a solid .324 batting average.
First Baseman Brian McConkey (Santa Maria: St Joseph) is a unanimous 2008 All-WSC First Team pick after being named to the second team as a freshman.  McConkey has taken his game to a new level during his sophomore campaign.  He average has never been below .400 this season, though it has dropped to .404, and he has increased his versatility in the field by playing both corner infield spots.  His patience at the plate has provided the Cougars with a constant scoring threat at the top of their line up.  He leads the team with 38 base on balls and a .526 on-base percentage, the third highest mark in school history.
Second Baseman Brad Bauer (San Carlos) batted .435 against WSC pitching and was a unanimous choice for the first team.  Bauer earned a starting spot at third base at the beginning of the season, but eventually found a permanent home and blossomed at second base.  He is hitting .371 on the season.
Designated Hitter Gabe Arcoleo (Salinas HS) had a difficult time cracking the Cougars’ starting line-up by trying to supplant McConkey or Cate at first base.  However as a fulltime hitter he became one of the most feared hitters in the loop and was another unanimous choice for the first team.  He has hit seven home runs and driven in 41 runs in only 31 games.
The entire Cuesta outfield was named to the 2008 Western State Conference First Team.  Two-time All-WSC First Team selection Mike Kaminski (Ventura) and unanimous first time selections Chad Gross (Claremont HS) and Ryan Smith (Clovis).   Kaminski is an all round threat for the Cougars.  He is among the team leaders in home runs (6), RBI (40), stolen bases (10) and batting average (.344).  Gross struggled through his freshman season and the beginning of his sophomore campaign, but found his stroke during WSC play.  Gross has clouted 11 home runs and driven in 47 runs, while increasing his batting average to .327.  He has also continued to play display excellent range in rightfield and posses one of the best arms in the State.  Smith moved into the leadoff spot for the Cougars and has been the catalyst for the Cougars offense.  The centerfielder adds power and speed to the line up with six home runs and a team-high 13 stolen bases.  He is hitting .342 on the year.
Shortstop Brad Decater (Sammamish, WA) and Left-hander Mike Alldredge (Templeton HS) were both named to the 2008 All Western State Conference Second Team.  Decater is hitting .339 and is second on the team with 12 doubles, but he has alternated between spectacular and erratic in the field.    Alldredge hurled a complete game shutout over Oxnard to clinch the 2008 WSC title and was nearly unhittable in conference play.  He was 4-0 with three complete games and a 1.41 ERA against the loop.  Overall he is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA.
Freshmen Relievers Matthew Estrada (Fremont) and Kyle Sousa (Lompoc HS) joined third-year sophomore Kyle Davis (Santa Maria: Righetti HS) as 2008 All-WSC Honorable Mention selections.  Estrada is 4-2 with a 5.13 ERA and Sousa is 1-0 with a 3.77 ERA and a team-high 17 appearances.  Davis has struggled with injuries during his career at Cuesta.  He earned a medical redshirt as a freshman and missed a lot of time over the last two seasons with injuries.  He missed 25 games in the middle of this season and struggled upon his return.  The slick fielding middle infielder is hitting .188.

BASEBALL-
Cuesta Baseball Earns #2 Seed, Hosts Playoffs this Weekend
SAN LUIS OBISPO (Cinco de Mayo, 2008)— This Week: The Cuesta Baseball team ended the regular season with a 30-13-1 overall record. They earned the #2 seed in the 2008 Southern California Regional Playoffs, but will have to wait to find out who their opponent will be. The Cougars are slated to play #15 Palomar, but if the Comets lose their play-in game on Tuesday, the Cougars will face either #16 Ventura or #17 Rio Hondo. The play-in will be played tomorrow at Palomar and Ventura. This weekend marks the 11th time in the last 12 years that the Cougars have hosted a first round playoff game. The Cougars have lost all three of their playoff games against Palomar College, including an elimination game in 2005; the same year they played and lost their only playoff game against Rio Hondo. The Cougars have never faced Ventura in the post-season, but beat the Pirates five times this season. Game 1 will begin at 3 PM on Friday and Game 2 will be at 11 Am on Saturday with Game 3 to follow if needed.
Last Week: The Cougars wrapped up their tenth Western State Conference title of the last dozen years with three wins last week. The Cougars opened the final week of the regular season with a 5-0 shutout of Oxnard on Tuesday. Sophomore left-hander Mike Alldredge (Templeton HS) worked his fourth complete game of the year and authored his first career shutout in the win over the Condors. On Thursday the Cougars beat Allan Hancock 6-2 and left-hander Tyler Fick (Valencia: hart HS) improved to 7-2 with the win. The Cougars final regular season game was forfeited by Moorpark College. The Raiders had several players suspended due to the COA decorum violation and did not have enough players to field a team. The Cougars ended their WSC schedule with a 21-4 record against the loop.
Notes: All Conference Selections will be released later this week

SOFTBALL-
Mt San Antonio Drops Cougars in First Round, Again
SAN LUIS OBISPO (Cinco de Mayo, 2008)— Last Week: The Cuesta softball team has gone a long way under Coach Sara Clarin, but they cannot seem to get further than Mt San Antonio College. Clarin came on board during the 2006 as the Cougars co-Head Coach and helped the Cougars reach the State Tournament for the first time in school history, but the past two seasons she has been at the helm. In 2007 she led the Cougars to 26 wins and to second place in the Western State Conference and into the playoffs, where they lost in the first round to Mt San Antonio. This year the Cougars took another step under Clarin winning the WSC Title and moving up in the seedings, however the Mounties found them again. Mt San Antonio dropped in the seeding, because of some early season forfeits for an ineligible player, and matched up with the Cougars for the second straight year. And once again the Mounties swept the Cougars out of the playoffs in a best-of-three first round series. On Saturday the Mounties beat the Cougars 3-0 and on Sunday they squeaked by with a 3-2 win over the Cougars. The Mounties are on their way to their fourth State Title of the past six years, while the Cougars end their season with a 29-20 record.
This Week: No contests, the season is over

TENNIS-
Cuesta’s Redman Advances to State Tournament
SAN LUIS OBISPO (Cinco de Mayo, 2008)— This Week: The Cuesta Women’s Tennis team will send freshman Chloe Redman (Morro Bay HS) to the State Championship Tournament this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Long Beach. Redman went 2-1 last weekend at the 2008 Southern California Regional Playoffs to advance in the singles bracket. Redman improved her overall season record to 21-4. She is considered an All American candidate.
Last Week: The Cuesta Women’s Tennis team saw its undefeated season and hopes of a State Title come to an end in an upset loss to #3 Grossmont College in the second round of the 2008 Southern California Regional Team Playoffs on Tuesday. The two teams split the six singles matches and for only the second time this season the Cougars had to count on their doubles teams to secure a victory. The Cougars' #2 Doubles team of Whitney Whiting (San Deigo) and Devin Merigold (Irvine) battled for a three set victory, but the Cougars' #1 and #3 doubles teams both fell in straight sets. The loss was the first of the year for the Cougars, who end their team season with a 16-1 record. On the weekend the Cougars took Redman and Whiting to the 2008 Southern California Regional Individual Playoffs. Merigold had also advanced, but chose to stay home to take a mid-term. Redman advanced to the State Tournament with a 2-1 mark, but Whiting missed after splitting her two matches. Whiting also took over for Jamie Burden (Fresno) as Redman’s doubles partner. Redman and Whiting had not played together all season long, but they won their first two set before dropping their third in a tiebreaker and missing a chance to advance to the State Tournament.
Notes: #1 Singles Player Chloe Redman (Morro Bay HS) has compiled a team-high 21 wins this season and ranks sixth in school history for single season wins. She is 12th all time in single season winning percentage at .840.

TRACK AND FIELD-
Cuesta Sends Seven Track Athletes to Regional Finals
SAN LUIS OBISPO (Cinco de Mayo, 2008)— This Week: There are seven athletes remaining on the 2008 Cuesta Track and Field teams. This Saturday that contingent, which includes five women and two men, will travel to Bakersfield for the 2008 Southern California Regional Finals. Saturday’s meet will begin at 10 AM. The seven athletes will be competing for a chance to qualify for the 2008 State Track and Field Championships the following week in Cerritos.
Last Week/Notes: The Cuesta Men and Women’s Track and Field teams competed at the 2007 Southern California Regional Preliminary Meet. The Cougars qualified seven athletes for this week’s finals.
The Cougars will send five women led by 2006 State Champion Pole Vault Kate Almond (Gonzales HS). Almond is favored to win her second State Title, despite not approaching her 2008 school record jump of 13-1 this year. Her best jump this season is 12-1. Teammates Sian Morgan (Bury, UK: SLO HS) and Colleen Allen (Atascadero HS) will be two of Almond’s toughest competitors for the State Title. Thrower Alexandria Jones (Tujunga) will make her second appearance at the SoCal Finals. Last year her season ended at the finals, but this year she is in good position to reach the State Meet. Hurdler Katrina Torres (SLO HS) continues to pick up speed. She came out for track after basketball season, she was first team all conference, and has dropped time every week. Last week, after barely qualifying, she dropped another half second off her time in the 100 hurdles (:15.46). She is now only twelve-hundredths off the school record time set in 1991 by Beth Ault (:15.34).
Long Jumper Mikell Ray (Lompoc HS) and Thrower Julian Salinas (Arvin HS) will represent the men’s team this week. Ray was fourth in the long jump, despite a strong headwind. Salinas beat his previous best in the javelin by twenty feet at the Western State Conference Meet to qualify for the SoCal Regional Prelims, but last week he equaled that mark to prove that it was not a fluke. Both men should advance to the State Meet.

SWIMMING-
Cuesta Women Finish 12th Behind State Champ Takahashi, Men 14th
SAN LUIS OBISPO (Cinco de Mayo, 2008)— Last Week: The Cuesta Men and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams finished their seasons last weekend at the 2008 State Swim and Dive Championships at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. The Cuesta women earned 12th place, while the men landed in 14th place. Both teams posted their best finish since 2003. The women were led by freshmen Amanda Takahashi (Clovis) Heather Shaug (King City HS) and Mikaela Persson (Sweden). The trio combined to score 84 of the Cougars’ 134 team points. Sprinter Ryan Baker (Woodlake HS) and Diver Tom Doran (Dublin HS) led the men’s team. The duo combined for 38 of the men’s 95 team points.
This Week: No contests, the season is over
Notes: Freshman Amanda Takahashi (Clovis) starred for the Cougars at the 2008 State Championships. She broke two school records and won an individual State Title. On the first day she finished a disappointing 11th in the 100 Individual Medley and ranked behind teammate Heather Shaug (King City HS), who finished fourth in the event, but the next day Takahashi got a chance to compete in her specialty. She won the 2008 State 50 Breaststroke title with a time of :31.78. The time broke a mark she set earlier in the year and established her as an All American candidate. She also became the first Cuesta swimmer to win an individual State Title since Jennifer Espino in 1994. On the final day of the meet, Takahashi finished second in the 100 Breaststroke, but also broke Sarah Virgil’s 1991 school record with a swim 1: 08.60.

Cuesta College Athletic Programs are funded through a combined effort of the College District, Associated Students of Cuesta,
