BOB MILLER- BASEBALL
bomiller@cuesta.edu
Bob Miller 2009Bob begins his eighth season as head baseball coach at Cuesta College. Under Miller’s guidance the Cougars have continued the programs rich tradition and success. The Cougars have advanced into playoffs for fourteen years in a row and have won ten of the last dozen Western State Conference titles. Miller began his career at Cuesta with back-to-back conference titles and he was named the 2003 WSC Coach of the Year after his first season. Miller has also continued Cuesta’s tradition as a launching pad for talented student-athletes; 74 of his players have moved on to study and play at the four-year level, while 12 have made the jump to the professional ranks.
Bob came to Cuesta from Riverside College where he served as the Tiger’s pitching coach for 2002 season. Miller helped guide RCC to a State Championship. Miller also served as an assistant at RCC during the 1993-95 seasons. Bob spent the four summers as the head coach of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in the prestigious Alaska Baseball League. Miller led the Glacier Pilots to a pair of ABL Championships and to the National Baseball Congress World Series Championship; winning in 2001. He was named the ABL Coach of the Year in both 2001 and 2008. Bob also spent six years (1996-2001) at Oral Roberts University as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During his tenure the Golden Eagles made four consecutive NCAA regional appearances. Bob has also coached at the University of Redlands and Southwestern Michigan College. Miller received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Redlands in 1989 and his Master’s at the United States Sports Academy in 1992. Bob and his wife Chris live in Paso Robles. They have two daughters, Ande and Megan.

COUGARS #7 IN PRESEASON BASEBALL POLL-
Opening Day- February 4th in Costa Mesa

SAN LUIS OBISPO (February 1, 2010)— In 2009, the Cuesta College Baseball team won its eleventh Western State Conference title of the past thirteen seasons and reached the post-season for the 14th consecutive year. The 2010 edition of Cuesta Baseball is loaded with talent and planning to continue that tradition with one of the biggest teams in school history. 2009 Western State Conference Coach of the Year Bob Miller (208-104-2) says, “We want to create an environment of competition. Compete in practice and in games everyday.” Miller enters his eighth season at the helm with what he calls his best recruiting class ever. He has a lot of sophomores who want their chance this year and a lot of freshman that are still learning. He wants his team be “consistent and intense”. It will not be an easy road for the Cougars; they open the season with four straight games against the #1 and #8 teams in the State and only one of those games is at home. Coach Miller says, “The staff is still a big question; they have (all) improved their velocity and command. The games will show (what they have).” The Cougars return four starters in the field. That quartet combined for only seven of the 2009 team’s 34 home runs, however they also attributed 21 of the teams 67 stolen bases and almost half of the squad’s 22 triples. Coach Miller says, “We will have a more situational offense, more small ball. We will be a good hit and run team.” The Cougars are well prepared to face any challenge that the 2010 campaign will bring them and Miller always has his teams ready to peak in time for the post-season. As for the pre-season, Collegiate Baseball ranks the Cougars #7.
The Cougars will open the 2010 campaign with a three game road trip to Costa Mesa to face against the defending State Champions Orange Coast, who enters the season ranked #1 in the State. The Cougars will open the season on Thursday, February 4th with a 2 PM game with the Pirates. They will also play Orange Coast on Friday (1 PM) and Saturday (2 PM). The Cougars host #9 Riverside in their home opener on February 11th (2 PM).

Pitchers
The Cougars have six hurlers vying for a spot in the starting rotation and return none of last year’s starters. Coach Bob Miller says, “We have a lot of good young arms, but they need time to develop. Fall was good to work out the kinks, we are looking much better.” The Cougars are planning to carry 16 pitchers on their active roster. Competition will be an important part of the staff’s success. Sophomore Mike Nielebeck (Roseville) is the staff’s veteran after starting two and appearing in 14 games last season. Nielebeck showed signs of brilliance last season and authored a complete game victory over Orange Coast in his first start of the year. He finished the season with a 3-1 record with one save and a 5.47 ERA. Coach Bob Miller says, “He is a battler and a hard worker.” Freshmen Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades) and Cory Ginther (Las Vegas, NV) are two of the team’s hardest throwers. Moscot earned All-CIF honors last season and both he and Ginther throw strikes. Lefty Marshall Gorham (San Diego) transferred from Indiana University and can be used as a starter or reliever. Gorham made seven relief appearances for the Hoosiers last year and struckout seven batters in eight innings of work, while posting a 10.13 ERA. Coach Bob Miller noted his improvement during the preseason. Freshman Matt Davis (Taft HS) was a two-time all league selection at Taft High and posted the staff’s lowest rotation during fall ball. Davis’ velocity is in the low 80’s, but he has tremendous movement. Sophomore Jonathan Christensen (Lake Havasu, AZ) is another veteran newcomer on the pitching staff. He spent his freshman season at Yavapai College in Arizona, where he pitched five innings with a 1-0 record and a 7.20 ERA. The Cougars will extend their starting rotation during the pre-season, but plan to drop down to a three-man rotation for their Western State Conference schedule.

Bullpen
The Cougars will use their surplus starters to fill out the bullpen and join the relief core. College of the Redwoods transfer Clae Baker (Juneau, AK) is a big right-hander (6-6, 220) and throws from a tough arm angle. He should see plenty of action out of the bullpen. He was 2-5 with a 5.94 ERA for a Redwoods team that won only eight games in 2009. Baker’s 36.1 collegiate innings pitched in 2009 leads the staff. Former San Luis Obispo County Pitcher of the Year John Brehm (Paso Robles HS) will be Coach Miller’s left-handed specialist out of the pen. He will be pitching in key spots this year and expected to get outs. Freshmen Corey Butcher (Arroyo Grande HS) and Phillip Gerber (Santa Clarita) are both right-handed relievers that are adept at producing groundballs. Butcher, a former All SLO County pick, has a good breaking ball and does a good job of keeping the ball down in the strike-zone. Gerber is a side-arm pitcher and is especially tough on right-handed hitters. The Cougars are also hoping that former All State (Colorado) pitcher Anthony Urbano (Denver, CO) bounces back from Tommy John surgery in time to make an impact this season. The Cougars will also use All State (Hawaii) Southpaw Isaiah Kaneakua (Kihei, HI) and All SLO County right-handers John Tiedeman (SLO HS) and Robbie Nadalsky (SLO HS) out of the bullpen. Freshman Jared Levin (Calabasas: SLO HS) and Garrett Turner (Orcutt: Righetti HS) will provide depth.

Catcher
The Cougars return Ty Muller (Oak Park HS) and Jake Reed (Simi Valley HS) behind the plate and add College of Sequoias transfer Mitchell Prophet (Visalia) and freshman Mike Williamson (Medford, OR). Muller, who split time between catcher and first base last season, is the most experienced returner with 184 plate appearances in 45 games. Muller led the team with 26 walks to boost his on-base percentage to .394 despite a .265 batting average. Muller has all the tools to be the Cougars everyday backstop again this season. Reed broke his hand during the off-season, but is expected to be healthy for the opener. Reed is good defensive catcher who hits with power. All six of his hits in 2009 went for extra bases, however he hit only .122 in 25 games. The Cougars pitching depth will also keep him off the mound. He made two relief appearances last season and was 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA in 8.2 innings. Prophet was the Giants’ starting backstop last year and his combination of skills could help him fill that role for the Cougars this year. He allowed only five passed balls last season and threw out 15 of 23 would be base stealers, while Reed and Muller allowed 16 stolen bases and 24 passed balls. Prophet hit only .242 last season, but has shown progress at the plate. Williamson will compete with the veteran group after coming off a strong fall season.

First Base
Sophomore Brett Hartman (Escondido HS) started off strong last season, but missed a big chunk of the middle of the season with injuries. After regaining his stroke he began to hit for power and ended the season with a .319 batting average. The Cougars are looking forward to having Hartman be a big part of the offense this season and provide excellent defense on the rightside of the infield. Big right-handers (both listed at 6-5 and over 225 pounds) Max Duval (SLO HS) and Eric Barbato (Granada Hills) will be able to platoon with Hartman or fill the designated hitter role. Coach Bob Miller says, “Duval’s bat needs to be in the line-up. He has great bat speed.” Duval is listed as a corner infielder, but a lingering knee problem may keep him at DH.

Second Base
Former SLO County Player of the Year Austin Cunningham (Atascadero HS) is primed for a big season. The former high school shortstop made his comeback last season after an arm injury, but played sparingly as a designated hitter. Cunningham hit .217 in 46 at bats last season, however he is expected to be at the top of the order for the Cougars this season. Coach Bob Miller says, “He has tremendous ability.” The Cougars are also anticipating big things from freshman Anthony Fadelli (Oakland) after a big fall season. Coach Miller says, “He has a good arm, good speed and a good upside.” Freshman Bryce Basinger (Paso Robles HS) provides a good glove off the bench.

Third Base
Converted Catcher Garrett Champion (Santa Monica) will start at the hot corner this year. Champion transferred to Cuesta from Brown University in Rhode Island. In 2009, he hit .273 in ten games as a catcher for the Ivy League program. He provides a strong bat and a strong arm at third base. The Cougars also have All-CIF Infielder Scott Fleury (San Jose), who can move over if needed. Coach Bob Miller says of Fleury’s style of play, “He plays with a chip on his shoulder.” Max Duval (SLO HS) can also cross the field from first base if healthy.

Shortstop
Loyola Marymount transfer TJ Filicia (San Diego) earned plenty of accolades from Coach Bob Miller, who says, “He has the best hands and feet on the team. He has a quick release and is smooth.” The Cougars also need Filicia to hit for average after going hitless in 10 games as a freshman for LMU in 2008. He redshirted in 2009 and is ready for a big season. The Cougars can also use Anthony Fadelli (Oakland) and Scott Fleury (San Jose) here if needed.

Leftfield
Third-year sophomore Zach Steele (Santa Barbara: Santa Ynez HS) is one of three veteran outfielders slated to start this season. Steele hit .286 for the Cougars last season and earned 2009 All Western State Conference Honorable Mention. Steele is a natural centerfielder and covers a lot of ground in the outfield. All SLO County pick Davey Schultz (SLO HS) is another leadoff type hitter that uses the whole field. Coach Bob Miller says, “He is very athletic.” Pitcher/Outfielder Robbie Nadalsky (SLO HS) and Michael Camporeale (Littleton, CO) will add depth.

Centerfield
2009 All Western State Conference Honorable Mention choice Danny Poma (Monterrey HS) is back in centerfield after a big freshman season. Poma hit .304 for the Cougars, but also posted an on-base percentage of .403. He led the Cougars in triples (4) and was also third in stolen bases (10) and fourth on the team in home runs (4). Zach Steele (Santa Barbara: Santa Ynez HS) will move over to center if there is a need.

Rightfield
Sophomore Matt Anderson (Santa Maria: Righetti HS) spent last season buried in the Cougars depth chart as their fifth outfielder. He played in only 15 games on the year and went 0- for –13 before getting his first hit. He ended the season with 19 at bats and a.158 batting average, but also a surprising .385 on-base percentage. Coach Bob Miller says, “He is a good leader, who does the little things. He is a winning player.” Freshman Michael Camporeale (Littleton, CO) will eventually find a space in the outfield. Coach Bob Miller says, “He can run, throw and hit with power. He is a little streaky and very raw.” Camporeale hit .615 as a senior at Chatfield High and led the State of Colorado with 14 home runs last year. Davey Schultz (SLO HS) will add depth.

NOTES- Reliever John Tiedemann kept the Cougars' post-season aspirations alive with nearly seven innings of standout relief. Tiedemann entered the game with one out in the third inning and down 4-0. His teammates had managed only two hits at that point and would not get their third safety for another two innings. The Cougars were able to close the gap to 4-3 with a three-run fifth inning, but the Vaqueros dinged Tiedemann in the sixth inning with pair of runs to extend their lead to 6-3 and close the narrow window, in which the Cougars are trying to squeeze their playoff hopes. However Tiedemann settled down and controled the Vaqueros the rest of the way. He allowed only one more hit the rest of the game, while piling up nine strikeouts, and his Cuesta teammates bats came alive. The Cougars tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning after putting the first three runners on base and methodically driving them in double, fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.. It was more of the same in the seventh inning when the Cougars first four batters reached on a bunt and three bloop singles in a five run inning to blow open the game. An insurance run in the eighth frame completed the comeback in the 12-6 win. The Cougars are now one-game behind the Vaqueros in the Western State Conference standings and in fourth place. Oxnard and Allan Hancock have both clinched the loop's two automatic bids and only one other team is expected to receive one of the six at-large berths awarded in the 18-team 2010 CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Western State Conference is the highest rated conference in the region and the winner between Cuesta and Santa Barbara tomorrow in Santa Barbara will be the loop's third representative. The playoffs seeding meeting is Sunday and the first round is on Tuesday.

NEXT- Cuesta will play at Santa Barbara tomorrow, Friday April 30th (2:30), in the final regular season game.

NOTES- TJ Filicia's grand slam home run in the bottom of the eighth inning kept the Cuesta Cougars playoff hopes alive. Cuesta pitchers Phillip Gerber and Isaiah Kaneakua combined to shutdown Moorpark in the final frame to preserve the Cougars' 5-3 win and increase the importance of next week’s three-game set. Cuesta is now 16-17 overall, but ranked 18th in the State in the (Rating Points Index (RPI), which is a major factor in playoff seeding. The Cougars have played a tough schedule this season, but also benefit from playing in the toughest conference in the region, the Western State. The Cougars entered today's game tied for fourth place in the WSC, but with a 7-10 mark they remain in range of third place #12 Santa Barbara. The WSC receives two automatic playoff berths, however because of the conference's strength at least three teams from the loop should be among the 18 teams to earn a post-season berth. The Cougars will need to battle next week to extend their consecutive playoff berth streak to 15 years.
Today, Cuesta leadoff batter Zach Steele scored to begin the game and the fans waited until the sixth inning for another run to cross the plate. Steele reached after being beaned, stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored on a wild pitch to give the Cougars the early advantage. In the sixth inning, Moorpark struck back to take a 3-1 lead. Landon Hunt chopped a two-out grounder between the first and second baseman and reached when First Baseman Ty Muller could not get back to the bag in time for the throw. The misplay was only the third hit allowed by Cuesta Starter John Brehm, but Matt Montgomery followed it with a two-run home run to give the Raiders the lead. A double by Clayton Elliott put another runner in scoring position and a fourth straight hit by John Travnick, an infield single, moved Elliott to third, however Elliott rounded the base and slipped on the way back. Muller threw across the diamond to get Elliott, but his errant throw allowed Elliott to score and also moved Travnick to third base. Brehm struckout Tyler Wirth to end the inning, but the damage was done and the Raiders led 3-1. The Raiders’ Samuel Bergman, who entered the game with an 11.93 ERA and was making his first start of the year, held the Cougars in check after Steele's leadoff run, but ran out of gas in the eighth inning. Like the first inning, Steele led off the eighth inning by getting hit by a Bergman offering. A base hit by Matt Anderson, the first by Cuesta since the fourth inning, gave the Cougars a pair of base runners and the makings of a rally. After a strikeout, Muller got his revenge on Elliott with a chopper to the Third Baseman. Elliott lost the handle and Muller was safe at first to load the bases for Filicia. The ensuing grand slam gave Cuesta back the lead, 5-3. Following Filicia's blast, Cuesta loaded the bases again, but was unable to capitalize as Reliever Ryan Donohoe struckout Steele to end the inning. In the ninth inning, Moorpark's Tyler Wirth began the inning with a base-hit, but Robert Tozcynski grounded into a double play to erase the threat, however Gerber, who had relieved Brehm in the seventh inning, was lifted in favor of Southpaw Isaiah Kaneakua after walking the next batter. An infield base-hit by Michael Bonenfant and a passed ball put the tying run in scoring position. Kaneakua intentionally walked clean-up hitter Tyler Weed to load the bases and face left-handed hitting Landon Hunt. Hunt grounded to Third Baseman Anthony Fadelli, who tagged Bonenfant to end the game.

NEXT- Cuesta will play its final three games of the regular season next week beginning with a game at Moorpark on Tuesday (2:30). The Cougars host #12 Santa Barbara on Thursday (2:30) and play the Vaqueros on the road on Friday (2:30).

Notes- The Cuesta Cougars slugged three home runs, but produced only four runs in a 9-4 defeat to local rival Allan Hancock. The Cougars fell to 15-16 on the season and are below .500 this late in the season for the first time since 1995. The team's current .269 batting average is also the lowest since 1989 (.260), yet Cuesta, with five games remaining in the season, still has a chance to reach the post-season for the 15th consecutive year. After today’s loss, the Cougars window is closing quickly, however the Cougars have played only four games against unranked teams this season and have also posted a 5-3 record against teams ranked in the Top Ten, including a current 2-1 edge in their season series with #9 Allan Hancock.
The Bulldogs Starter Brandon Creath set the tone for today’s game by striking out the side in the bottom of the 1st inning. However, while the Cougars did not hit much, they did hit hard. In the second inning, Cuesta's Ty Muller gave Cuesta the lead with a tremendous clout over the centerfield fence. Two batters later Max Duval send a double to the wall and scored a few pitches later, when Creath uncorked two wild pitches while striking out Davey Schultz. The Bulldogs came back the next inning with three straight singles to start the frame. A pair of doubles by Skylar Ellis and Adam Jones capped the five-hit, four-run inning and gave the Bulldogs the lead for good, 4-2. The Bulldogs manufactured a run in the fourth inning after Reliever John Tiedemann took over for Cuesta Starter Jake Reed and beaned the first batter he faced, Austin Nyman, who came around to score. In the sixth inning, Dylan Young's two-run double increased the Bulldog’s lead to 7-2, but the Cougars had not yet conceded the game. After the seventh inning stretch Duval and Mitchell Prophet both hit solo home runs and chased Creath from the game, while closing the gap to 7-4. However the Cougars did not manage another hit in the game as Jacob Valenzuela closed out the Bulldogs first win over Cuesta this season, 9-4. Cuesta Coach Bob Miller is 25-12 against Allan Hancock in his eight years at Cuesta.

Next- Cuesta wil play the Bulldogs in Santa Maria on THursday (2:30). On Saturday (1 PM), Cuesta hosts #12 Santa Barbara. The game will be broadcast LIVE (audio and video) by the Cuesta Broadcast project. The link is- http://www.network1sports.com/schools/cuesta.asp

NOTES- The Cougars entered the ninth inning with a two-run lead, but needed a run in the bottom of the inning to pick up the 3-2 win over Oxnard, which also extended the team’s streak of one-run game to eight in a row. The Cougars are 4-4 over that stretch, but with only seven games left in the season the Cougars need to win every game they can if they hope to extend their consecutive playoff appearance streak to 15 years. Cuesta Ace Jon Moscot was in top form against the Condors, who entered the game in first place in the Western State Conference. Moscot, who was coming off back-to-back complete games, hurled seven shutout innings and struckout eight Condors before turning a 2-0 lead over to Reliever John Tiedemann. The Cougars had staked Moscot to a 2-0 lead in the third inning after the Condors momentarily lost their composure. Shortstop Bryce Basinger led off the inning with a single and beat out a fielder's choice to shortstop by Zach Steele, which gave the Cougars a runner at first and second with no outs. Oxnard Pitcher JC Agauyo struckout the next two batters, but also managed to balk Basinger and Steele into scoring position. Basinger scored on a passed ball, while Steele crossed on a base-hit by Ty Muller to provide the 2-0 advantage for Moscot and Cuesta. The third inning rally held until the top of the ninth inning, where Tiedemann blew his second straight save opportunity. Tiedemann issued a free pass to Oxnard's Brian Willson to begin the inning and Jonathan Erb followed it with a chopper in to right field. A sacrifice attempt by Blake Adame loaded the bases on Third Baseman Anthony Fadelli's error. On the next play Fadelli's miscue was nullified by a double play on Harper White's grounder to shortstop, however it also allowed Willson to score and Erb to advance to third. Erb tied the game on Zack McDonnell's single before Juan Reveles grounded out to end the inning. It looked like extra innings were imminent after the first two Cuesta batters flew out, but Agauyo, who went the distance for the Condors, walked Pinch Hitter Mike Williamson and plunked Bryce Basinger for the second time in the game to move Williamson into scoring position. Centerfielder Zach Steele ended the game with a lined shot to the left-center wall to easily score Williamson and win the game, 3-2. Steele's walk-off single ended a 0-for-17 dry spell for the all conference outfielder, who had not recorded a hit since April 1st.

NEXT- Cuesta plays at Oxnard this Saturday (1 PM). Next Saturday, April 24th, the Cuesta Broadcasting Project will stream both live audio and video of the Cougars game against Ventura.

NOTES- For the sixth straight time a Cuesta contest has been decided by a single run. The Cougars are an even 3-3 in those games, but like many before it, today's game nearly tipped in favor of visiting Ventura. The Pirates struck first when a leadoff single in the third inning by Joseph Luna turned into an instant rally. Luna was sacrificed over to second and then scored on a stolen base attempt when Cuesta Pitcher Jake Reed uncorked a wild pitch allowing Luna to continue to the corner and head home with the go-ahead run. The Cougars finally got on the board in the sixth inning on Matt Anderson's leadoff home run. The Cougars followed Anderson's lead and converted a pair of walks and five more singles into a 7-1 lead before the Pirate bullpen could put out the fire. It was Ventura’s Luna who again brought the Ventura offense to life; he gapped a one-out triple to score a run and then scored on a sacrifice to cut the Cuesta lead to 7-3 in time for the 7th inning stretch. After the stretch, Cuesta Designated Hitter Ty Muller led off with a single and scored an unearned run on a fielder's choice after a base hit and an error had moved him to third base. His run would give the Cougars just enough insurance for the win. Cuesta Reliever John Tiedemann was called on to close out the game for the Cougars and entered the game with a team-best 1.42 ERA. The Bucs led off their final at bat with a pair of walks and closed the gap to 8-5 on AJ Gallardo's one-out triple. Gallardo followed his teammates across the plate on the next play, a groundout to second, to cut the Cuesta lead to two runs. Ventura brought in Pinch Hitter Erik Hong to try an extend the inning and the game and he promptly sent a stand up double to the left-center field fence and was, in turn, replaced by pinch runner Eric Martinez. Martinez scored on Adam Barry's base-hit to center and Barry moved to third after his single passed under the glove of Centerfielder Zach Steele. The tying run was now ninety feet away from the plate and Ventura's Designated Hitter Ryan Jones sent a chopper up the middle, Barry crossed the plate, but his run was nullified as First Baseman Max Duval scooped Austin Cunningham's throw out of the dirt in time to register the final out of the game on Jones and preserve the Cougars' 8-7 victory.

NEXT- Cuesta plays at Ventura next Tuesday (2:30).

Notes- The Cuesta Cougars played three one-run games during the Hancock Easter Tournament, but after winning the first game they lost the next two by the identical score of 8-7. In each of the last two losses the Cougars fell behind early and pushed their way back into the game. Yesterday, against Merced, the Cougars comeback ended a run short, but today, after falling behind 5-1 in the first six innings, the Cougars took a 7-5 lead into the ninth inning against LA Harbor. The Seahawks scored three runs on three different Cuesta pitchers in the top half of the final frame to complete a three-game sweep of the Hancock Easter tournament. Harbor started the day's scoring with four runs in the second inning keyed by four singles off Cuesta Starter Jake Reed. Reed bounced back and held the Seahawks in check until a leadoff double by Marc Venning chased him in the sixth inning. Venning came around to score on a base-hit by William Loza to extend the lead to 5-1, but Cuesta Reliever Philip Gerber got some help in the bottom of the inning. A trio of base-hits off Harbor Starter Ryan Young allowed the Cougars to pull within a run, but a walk after the rally ended Young's day. The Cougars picked up two more walks as three Cuesta batters in a row were issued a free pass to load the bases, without taking a swing at a single offering. Leftfielder Matt Anderson finally took a swing and his bases clearing triple provided the Cougars with a two-run margin. The score remained 7-5 until the top of the ninth, when the Seahawks struck back. Gerber gave up a one-out hit to Jared Decasrto and was lifted in favor of Southpaw John Brehm. Brehm struckout the lefty Eric Anderson, but a double by John Kim plated Decastro and cut the Cuesta lead in half. Brehm walked the next batter and was replace by Sophomore Mike Nielebeck. Nielebeck issued a walk to load the bases and then Frankie Sixtos dropped a sinking line-drive in front of Anderson in leftfield to drive in the tying and go ahead run. In the bottom of the ninth Harbor's Closer Scott Livergood set the Cougars down in order to earn the 8-7 victory. Cuesta is now 12-12 on the year. Harbor is 10-11

NOTES- Cuesta Coach Bob Miller took a chance with the back end of his bullpen against #9 Merced. The Cougars started Anthony Urbano on the mound and followed him up with a pair of pitchers who had combined for only 4.1 innings on the season. Urbano himself was making only his third appearance since undergoing off-season Tommy John surgery and had hurled only two innings of relief before today's game against the Blue Devils. Urbano allowed an unearned run in the first inning, but after beginning the second frame with a walk and a hit batter. He was lifted after they were sacrificed into scoring position and both runs would score as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings. Meanwhile the Cougars were struggled out ofd the gate and sent the minimum of nine batters to the plate during the first three innings. In the fifth inning Merced struck again, a double followed by a pair of errors gave Merced a chance for a big inning and they made the Cougars pay with four more runs to build a commanding 8-1 lead halfway through the ball game. The Cougars began their comeback the bottom of the inning with four runs highlighted by Matt Anderson's three-run home run. Cuesta Reliever John Tiedemann made his team-leading ninth appearance of the year to close out the top of the fifth inning and shutdown the Blue Devils the rest of the way to give the Cuesta batsmen a chance to slug their way back into the game. Max Duval's leadoff walk and two Merced errors allowed the Cougars to manufacture a run in the sixth inning and Anderson led off the seventh by slugging his second home run of the game to pull Cuesta within one run. Merced brought in their Ace Shawn Stuart to slow the Cougars after Anderson's second clout. Stuart earned a save by protecting the Blue Devils slight margin over the final 2.1 innings for an 8-7 victory. Cuesta is now 12-11 on the year.

Notes- A leadoff walk and three straight one-out base hits was all Cuesta Starter Jon Moscot would need to secure a victory over #2 Cypress. The Cougars scored a pair of runs in their first at bat on consecutive base-hits by TJ Filicia, Ty Muller and Brett Hartman, but added only one more hit the rest of the game. Moscot hurled his first complete game of the year and picked up his team-leading sixth win of the season without allowing an earned run. The Chargers were able to double Cuesta's hit total, but Moscot scattered those hits over the entire game and only twice allowed multiple hits in an inning. The Chargers put together back-to-back hits with one out in the fifth inning, however both runners were eventually caught stealing. In the seventh inning, the Chargers smacked back-to-back two-out base hits, but an inning ending strikeout stopped the threat. The Chargers only run came in the second inning after a one out error landed Erik Hempe safe at first base. Third Baseman DC Legg drove home the unearned run on a double on the next play. Cuesta is now 12-10 overall, while Cypress falls to 15-9.

Moscot allowed an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning, which tied the game, but the Cuesta batsmen finally figured out Montgomery in the fifth innings. Montgomery stuckout seven Cuesta batters in the first four innings, but gave up four hits, beaned two batters and allowed seven runs in the fifth. The COugars went through two more Moorpark pitchers in the next frame as they tacked on eight more runs to secure the victory. Cuesta is now 11-8 overall and 4-3 in the WSC.

Starting Pitcher Cory GInther authored a complete game 5-hit victory for the Cougars and kept them from following below .500 for the first time since they began the season 1-2. Ginther did not allow a hit after the Bulldogs scored their two runs in the fourth inning. Shortstop TJ Filicia drove in a run in both the first and third inning to give the Cougars, but the Bulldogs evened things up in the fourth following a leadoff walk and three hits. Second Baseman Austin Cunningham scored the winning run after manufacturing a run. Cunningham reached on a walk, stole second base and moved to third on a ground out to second and scored on Zach Steele's groundout to short. Notes- Cuesta split a twinbill with Citrus College on Saturday. Owls Ace Scott McKeen outdueled freshman Robbie Nadalsky in Game 1 as Nadalsky made his first appearance on the hill this season. The Cougars managed only one hit off McKeen in the first four innings, but the Cougars had a chance to tie or win the game in each of the last four innings. Reliever Phillip Gerber shut down the Owls from the fourth inning, but the Cuesta offense did not take advantage and stranded seven runners over the last four innings, including a bases loaded opportunity in the seventh inning that chased McKeen. In Game 2, the Cougars jumped out early and took a 5-1 lead in the first four innings. The Owls knocked out starter Jake Reed in the sixth inning and closed the gap to 5-4, but Reliever John Brehm kept them in check the rest of the way to preserve the game. Rightfielder Matt Anderson's two-run home run ignited a four-run sixth inning to provide Brehm with some room to work.

Notes- El Camino Starter Andrew Pulido made only one error in his first eight innings of pitching against Cuesta today- a two-run home run to Designated Hitter Ty Muller in the fourth inning. Other than Muller's homer he handled the Cougars and was set to continue his team's season-long winless streak with a complete game in the ninth. Cuesta Second Baseman Austin Cunningham changed all of that by leading off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double to leftfield. Shortstop TJ Filicia followed that with his third base-hit of the day to bring Muller to the plate as the potential winning run. Muller grounded into a fielder's choice and was replaced by Pinch Runner Bryce Basinger. Cuesta Coach Bob Miller also went to his bench for Pinch Hitter Michael Camporeale, who promptly sent the first pitch he saw down the leftfield line to score Cunningham and Basinger and tie the game. The El Camino bullpen began moving for the first time all day when Pulido issued his first walk of the day to First Baseman Brett Hartman. Miller went back to the bench and made his third substitution of the inning with Pinch Hitter Mike Williamson, because he thought he was a "hungry hitter". Like Camporeale, Williamson came up swinging and lined a walk-off base-hit to right to score Camporeale and win the game, 5-4. The Cuesta pitching staff had matched Pulido all game, but Starter Cory Ginther's potential gem was undone by three unearned runs scored on four Cuesta errors. Reliever Jon Tiedemann extended his season long scoreless streak to 11.2 innings in the eighth, but could not retire any of the four batsmen he faced in the ninth, which forced home a run to increase the Warriors lead to 4-2. Brehm relieved Tiedemann and struck out three straight batters to leave the bases loaded and set up the Cougars' comeback. Cuesta is 4-3 on the year, while El Camnio slipped to 6-1.

Notes- Cuesta outplayed visiting Riverside in every facet of the game during their 2010 home opener. The Tigers committed five errors in the game and gave up 16 hits to the Cougars. Cuesta Starter Marshall Gorham blanked the Tigers in the first two innings, but back-to-back doubles in the third inning allowed Riverside to score its only two runs of the game. Those runs closed the gap to 4-2, but Cuesta would tack on five more runs, while Freshman John Tiedemann hurled six innings of hitless relief to secure the win. The Cougars are 1-1 on the year.

Next- As noted in an earlier email. The Cougars 2 PM game against Oxnard has been cancelled. The Cougars will play Riverside again tomorrow at 10:30 AM.
