CUESTA COLLEGE ANNOUNCES FALL 2009 ATHLETIC HONOR ROLL

SAN LUIS OBISPO (January 26, 2010)-- Cuesta has compiled the names of 60 individuals who have risen to the top of Cuesta College’s 2009 fall scholar-athlete list, including several repeat honorees. The success of Cuesta student athletes is significant, as is the fact that 47% of Cuesta College Athletes made the honor roll and earned All Western State Conference Academic Team status. A dozen Cuesta sophomores made their second appearance on the Fall Honor Roll. The honorees include five athletes that were also named to the 2009 All Western State Conference First Team as an athlete- Water Polo’s Karl Weit (Atascadero HS), Soccer’s Corinne Story (Paso Robles HS) and Harriers Kelly Barmann (New Mexico), Jehan Mirzaei (Arroyo Grande HS) and Paige Petersen (Santa Margarita: Atascadero HS). Nine athletes posted perfect 4.0 Grade Point Averages- Cagers Joel Iventosch (Colfax HS) and Erika Wilhelm (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS) from basketball, Andy Okun (San Jose) and Nic Lalanne (Porterville) from water polo, Harriers Jehan Mirzaei (Arroyo Grande HS) and Paige Petersen (Santa Margarita: Atascadero HS) from cross country and a trio of soccer players; Jillian Capdevielle (Dana Point), Kayla Nevius (Lake Isabella) and Kaysea Woods (Santa Maria: Templeton HS).
The Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll recognizes the student-athletes who have completed 12 units during the past semester with a grade point average of at least a 3.0 and finished in good standing with their respective team. This year the Honor Roll has representatives from each of the seven fall sports and both basketball teams. The Women’s Cross Country team led the way with a combined 3.270 grade point average. The harriers, along with Women’s Basketball, Men’s Water Polo and Women’s Soccer, will represent Cuesta as a nominees for the Western State Conference and Pepsi/State scholar teams awards.
Cougar athletes traditionally excel in the classroom and this semester was no exception. Cuesta’s athletes combined to complete 95.3% of their classes for a 2.962 GPA.

M BASKETBALL-
#15 Cuesta Faces Rival Bulldogs on the Road
SAN LUIS OBISPO (February 1, 2010)- This Week: The Cuesta Men’s Basketball team plays local rival Allan Hancock for the third time. The Cougars beat the Bulldogs in each of their previous meetings, December 30th in Santa Maria (88-68) and January 16th in SLO (80-59). The Cougars need to complete the sweep this Wednesday to maintain their one-game lead over Moorpark in the Western State Conference standings. The Bulldogs are in the WSC cellar and out of playoff contention, but with four games left in their season they can still play the spoiler. The game will begin at 7 PM and follow the women’s game.
Last Week: The Cougars picked up two more Western State Conference victories and maintained a one-game lead in the loop’s standings with three games to play. The Cougars began the week with their 25th victory in the past 26 games against the troubled Ventura Pirates, 74-68. Sophomores Roger Guardia (Spain) and Xavier Mylleville (Belgium) each had 22 points to help the Cougars overcome a 30-29 half-time deficit. On Saturday against Oxnard, the Cougars were once again down at the intermission, 37-32, and without their Sixth Man Henok Yigzaw (Sweden), who was injured against Ventura. Without the instant offense often provided by Yigzaw the Cougars bench contributed only seven points, three rebounds and three assists to the game. The Cougars rode their starting line-up the entire second half and produced 64 points to cruise to a 96-72 win. Guardia enjoyed another fine game with 34 points and a team-high six rebounds. The Cougars are 22-5 overall and 8-1 in the WSC.
Notes: 2009 All-WSC Guard Roger Guardia (Spain) is the glue that holds together one of the top teams in the state. He has found a way to lead the Cougars to the top of the WSC, while making each of his teammates better and morphing into any role needed to win a game. When all-WSC Point Guard Christian Koutras (Sweden) was injured against Allan Hancock, Guardia moved over and dished out a team-high six assists, while also scoring 24 points. On Saturday, the Cougars, without Henok Yigzaw (Sweden), needed a three-point specialist and Guardia answered with seven three-pointers on ten shots for 34 points. Guardia is part of a team that boasts five players scoring in double-digits, but he has shown the ability to step up at any time. During conference play he has absolutely dominated the circuit with an average of 21.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.3 steals in the nine games. >>top
W BASKETBALL-
Cuesta Women Cagers Looking for Season Sweep Against Bulldogs
SAN LUIS OBISPO (February 8, 2010)- This Week: The Cuesta Women’s Basketball team plays one Western State Conference game with a chance to increase its season win total. The Cougars travel to Santa Maria on Wednesday to play local rival Allan Hancock for the third time this season. The Cougars have hosted and beaten the Bulldogs twice this season, 71-64 on December 5th and 62-46 on January 16th, but to complete the sweep they must beat the only other team in the WSC with a losing record in hostile territory. The game is part of a WSC twinbill with the women playing at 5 PM and the men following at 7 PM. The Cougars have a bye in their schedule on Saturday.
Last Week: The Cougars opened last week on the road against #1 Ventura. The Pirates crushed the Cougars for the second time this season in dominating fashion. Ventura has stymied the Cuesta offense this season, allowing only 25 points in their first meeting and 26 points last Wednesday. In their first meeting, no Cuesta player scored more than four points, but sophomore Forward Lauren Maurer (Colfax HS) led the Cougars with 11 points in last week’s 66-26 loss. On Saturday the Cougars hosted Oxnard and almost pulled off an upset. The Condors beat the Cougars by 30 points (52-22) in their first meeting, but on Saturday Night they squeezed out a one-point victory over the Cougars, 47-46. Small Forward Raleigh O’Brien (Oakdale HS) led the Cougars with 12 points in the loss. Cuesta is now 4-18 overall and 1-8 against the Western State Conference.
Notes: Sophomore Forward Lauren Maurer (Colfax HS) displayed moments of brilliance early in her freshman season, but injuries slowed her down. This season she has played in all 22 games, but has not displayed the quickness inside that allowed her all those easy points as a freshman. Maurer is averaging only 5.1 points per game this season, less than half of her average last season. However Maurer has held onto her starting spot and contributed in other ways. She leads the team in assists (1.6 apg) and is second on the team in both blocks (16) and steals (25). Her 5.0 rebounds per game are the third highest total on the team. >>top
BASEBALL-
Cougars Host the Pepsi Classic this Friday and Saturday
SAN LUIS OBISPO (February 8, 2010)- This Week: Cuesta will host the 2010 Pepsi Classic this Friday and Saturday. Six teams are scheduled to compete in the tournament, but the Cougars will also host #12 Riverside in a non-conference game on Thursday (2 PM) before the tournament begins. On Friday the Cougars host Western State Conference rival Oxnard at 2 PM, while Riverside plays #17 Canada at Sinsheimer Park and #17 Allan Hancock hosts San Francisco. On Saturday, Oxnard (11 AM) and Cuesta (2 PM) both play San Francisco at Cuesta, while the Bulldogs play at twinbill against Canada.
Last Week: The Cougars opened the season against defending State Champion Orange Coast last Thursday. The top-ranked Pirates took the first game of the three-game series with a 7-2 win against #5 Cuesta. Cuesta Right-hander Cory Ginther (Las Vegas, NV) got the call to start the season opener, but was saddled with the loss. The remainder of the series was rained out. The Cougars and Pirates will make up one game on April 8th in Costa Mesa. The Cougars are 0-1.
Notes: Sophomore Designated Hitter Ty Muller (Oak Park HS) scored the Cougars first run of 2010 with a solo home run off Orange Coast’s Ryan Doran in the fifth inning of the season opener. Muller had more plate appearances than any of Cuesta’s returning players and was ready for the Pirates’ hurlers. Muller, who hit .265 in 2009, walked and flew out in his other plate appearances.
SOFTBALL-
Cougars Searching for First Win of 2010
SAN LUIS OBISPO (February 8, 2010)- Last Week: The Cougars lost a doubleheader against #14 Sequoias last Tuesday. The Cougars nearly upset the Giants in the opener after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Sequoias recovered and won 3-2. In Game 2, it was all Sequoias as the Giants took the nightcap with an 8-0 win. The Cougars twinbill scheduled for last Saturday against West Hills was postponed until February 8, 2010. The Cougars are now 0-4.
This Week: On Monday the Cougars make-up their postponed doubleheader against West Hills. On Tuesday the Cougars host Foothill at 1 PM and then hit the road for the weekend. The Owls will also play Allan Hancock at 3 PM. The Cougars play in the Sequoias Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. They open the first round against Gavilan (Noon) and Fresno City (2 PM) on Saturday. The first round games will be played at Fresno City and Sunday’s games are scheduled for Visalia.
