Cuesta Finishes Second in WSC Supremacy

SAN LUIS OBISPO (May 11, 2009)— In the Western State Conference's year end report, Cuesta College Athletics finished second among the 15 member schools. The Cougars won three conference titles and were 32.5 points behind runaway winner Ventura, however they were also a full twenty points ahead of third place Santa Barbara City. Ventura has now won the past ten titles and competes in a conference leading 18 of the twenty sports offered, while Cuesta has only 16 sports. Cuesta won the title three times in 1992, 1993 and 1994. Cuesta joined the Western State Conference in 1983 and has finished worse than fifth place only one in 26 years.
Cuesta competes in only 16 of the twenty sports offered by the conference. This year, the Cougars brought home titles for men's basketball, baseball and women's tennis. Cuesta ranks second in the conference's 29-year history with 107 titles.

The Cuesta College Athletic teams have always been known for their success on the field and in the classroom. This week the California Community College Athletic Association and Pepsi Co. have announced that Cougars led the state with three teams honored as 2007-08 Pepsi Scholar Teams. The 2008 Cuesta men's basketball team, with a combined team 3.04 grade-point average, as well as the 2008 women's cross country team, with a 3.48 GPA, were both named to the Fall 2007 list. Many of the harriers joined the track team last spring and also helped lead Cuesta's women's track and field team to a spot on the list. The 2008 women's track and field team posted a team GPA of 3.23 and was honored for second straight year. Cuesta led all schools with three teams being named CCCAA/Pepsi Scholar Teams. This year only a dozen from well over a thousand teams competing for the 107 schools in the CCCAA were honored and Cuesta accounted for 25% of the list. Cuesta College's athletic teams are annually ranked among the best academic programs in the State. Cuesta has had a dozen teams honored as Pepsi Scholar teams over the past decade and will have, at least, one team nominated this year. The women's cross country team accumulated a 3.30 GPA for the 2008 season and will be nominated again this spring, however the Cougars could have a few more teams pick up the required 3.0 team GPA this spring. Below is a list of recent winners from Cuesta.

CUESTA COLLEGE ANNOUNCES FALL 2008 ATHLETIC HONOR ROLL

SAN LUIS OBISPO (February 19, 2009)-- Cuesta has compiled the names of 61 individuals who have risen to the top of Cuesta College's 2008 fall scholar-athlete list, including several repeat honorees. The success of Cuesta student athletes is significant, as is the fact that 48% of Cuesta College Athletes made the honor roll and earned All Western State Conference Academic Team status. A dozen Cuesta sophomores made their second appearance on the Fall Honor Roll. The 12 repeat honorees include five athletes that were also named to the 2008 All Western State Conference First Team as an athlete. Three athletes posted perfect 4.0 Grade Point Averages- Women's water polo was represented by Erin Gray (Atascadero HS) and Eric Cavanaugh (Fresno) from men's water polo team as well as, Jehan Mirzaei (Arroyo Grande HS) and Andrew Rapoport (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS) from cross-country.
The Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll recognizes the student-athletes who have completed 12 units during the past semester with a grade point average of at least a 3.0 and finished in good standing with their respective team. This year the Honor Roll has representatives from each of the seven fall sports and both basketball teams. The Women's Cross Country team led the way with a combined 3.301 grade point average. The harriers will represent Cuesta as a nominee for the Western State Conference and Pepsi/State scholar teams awards.

BASEBALL-
Three Cuesta Baseball Players Named All State
SAN LUIS OBISPO (May 26, 2009)— The accolades continue to accumulate for 2009 Western State Conference Player of the Year Ryan Aguayo (Pico Rivera). Aguayo, the 2009 Cuesta Team MVP, was named to the 2009 All State First Team and was accorded All American honors at last weekend’s year end meeting at the 2009 Baseball State Championships in Fresno. Aguayo led the Cougars with a .401 batting average and scored a team-high 57 runs, while also driving in 56 runs in 46 games. He batted second in the line-up most of the season and his team-high 21 doubles as well as his 13 sacrifice hits helped drive the Cougars offense, which averaged over eight runs a game. Aguayo solidified his status as an All American candidate by hitting .429 in the Cougars three playoff games. Aguayo was the only member of the team to be named to the first team, but two other Cuesta sophomores were named to the second team.
Aguayo may have been alone on the 2009 All State team, but a pair of his teammates was selected to the 2009 All Southern California Team. Starting Pitcher Joey Parsons (Carmel HS) and Outfielder Jacob Domingos (Templeton: Paso Robles HS) were both named to the 2009 All Southern California team. Parsons, the 2009 Western State Conference Pitcher of the Year, spent his freshman year at the University of Hawaii, but pitched less than an inning during that season. This year he joined Southpaws Todd Simko (Arroyo Grande HS) and Matt Kretchmer (Carmel HS) to form one of the most formidable rotations in the State, despite the fact that even with Parsons’ 2008 stats the trio combined to pitch less than 18 innings combined in 2008. Parsons, the lone right-hander in the group, was the ace of the staff and led the rotation with a 9-1 record and a 3.43 ERA. He also struckout 87 batsmen in his 107.2 innings of work, both marks were also team-highs. Parsons, like Aguayo, solidified his All State status in the post-season with a complete game victory over Mt San Antonio to open the playoffs. Domingos spent the 2009 season ensconced in rightfield and in the clean-up spot in the Cougars batting order. He led the team with seven home runs and was third on the team with 43 runs driven in. He hit .335 for the season and was named to the All-WSC First Team for the second time. Domingos played third base as a freshman in 2007, but developed into one of the state’s top defensive outfielders after redshirting in 2008. His cannon-like arm was a constant concern to third base coaches, who feared sending their runners for an extra-base. He was selected for a 2009 All-WSC Gold Glove and posted eight outfield assists on the year, including a game saving throw home in Parsons’ playoff victory.
M BASKETBALL-
Cuesta Cagers End Season In Home Playoff Loss
SAN LUIS OBISPO (March 2, 2009)- Last week: The #14-seed Cuesta men's basketball team lost its first round playoff game to #19-seed West LA, 65-63, at the Cuesta Gym on Wednesday. The Cougars converted only 33% of their shots on the night, while the Wildcats shot at a 44% clip. Despite the poor marksmanship, the Cougars went into the intermission with a 34-31 lead and controlled the game most of the second half, however they could not maintain the lead down the stretch. The Wildcats took advantage of the Cougars' shooting struggles and the officials and crept ahead in the final minute. The Cougars were plagued by foul trouble throughout the second half and lost two-time all-conference Forward Joe Ayarza (Panama) to fouls with two minutes left in the game, after having him sit out most of the second half. All State Guard Tom Schumacher (Luxembourg) scored 14 points for the Cougars, but was physically battered all game, which led to a technical foul in the second half. It was the second technical foul of the night, the same official also cited Cuesta Coach Rusty Blair in the first half. Power Forward Frank Muller (Luxembourg) recorded his fifth double-double of the year to keep the Cougars in the game. He ended the contest with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead both teams in those categories. Center Shakir Johnson scored 15 points to lead West LA, who will advance to the second round against #3 San Bernardino last Saturday. The Wildcats win marked the second time that their coach, Ernie Carr, has won a playoff game at the Cuesta Gym. He also beat Cuesta in the first round of the playoffs in 1994, when he coached at Rio Hondo. His West LA team is now 17-15 on the year, while the Cougars ended the year at 24-11.
Notes: Point Guard Christian Koutras (Sweden) is considered the finest point guard to play for Cuesta since the Cougars won their last conference title in 1999. He set a new Cuesta single season assist record this season by barely eclipsing the former mark set just two years ago. Koutras ended the season averaging 5.265 assists per game, which broke Casey Blair's 2007 mark of 5.218. Koutras season total of 179 assists still ranks second to former All State Point Guard Brian Dignan's 188 assists in 1997. All State Shooting Guard Tom Schumacher (Luxembourg) ended the season with a team-high 647 points for a team-high average of 18.5 per game. His 647 points rank second to Kareem Grant's single season school record of 650 points set in 2003. Two-time All-WSC First team Forward Joe Ayarza (Panama) ended his career ranked third all time in points (1,165) and rebounds (488).

The Cougars ended the season with an 8-22 overall record and wound up in 5th place in the Western State Conference with a 3-9 mark against the loop.

SAN LUIS OBISPO (November 24, 2008)- Last Week: The Cuesta Men and Women's Cross Country teams traveled to the State Championships in Fresno for the first time as a group. The Cougars had not sent the men and women to the State Championship Meet before this year, which also marked the first year that the men had reached the event. The women made their third appearance of the past six years and finished 18th as a team in the 24-team field. The men landed in 19th place.
Notes: The Cougars sent 14 harriers to the 2008 State Meet this Saturday in Fresno. The men were led by freshman Misael Corral (Durango, MEX: King City HS), who finished in 26th place (21:02.2). Travis Hallanan (Paso Robles HS) was the Cougars leading runner in every race this year, yet he fell to 56th place while battling a chest cold. Freshmen Jehan Mirzaei (Arroyo Grande HS), 126th place, Jimmy Lawrence (Windham, NY), 143rd and Oscar Pena (King City HS), 144th place, rounded out the Cougars' scoring group. The women will be led by 2008 All-Southern California Harrier Lacey O' Connor (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS), who finished in 17th place. O'Connor's finished the course in 18:50.4, however she needed more help from her teammates, the Cougars were without #2 runner Jennifer Love (Hemet HS), who missed the race with an injury. 2007 All-Conference runner Majida Fazal (Dubai, UAE) landed in 117th place and led the rest of the Cougars scoring pack including Cassie Schultz (Atascadero HS), 126th place, Janelle Perry (Crescent City: Templeton Ind.), 152nd place, and Kari Gunderson (Danville), 154th place.

Cuesta Soccer Lands Five on All WSC Teams

SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 1, 2008)— The Cuesta Women's Soccer team finished in fifth place in the Western State Conference, behind three playoff team in the toughest conference in the State. The Cougars ended the season with a 8-11-2 record. It was the Cougars third losing season in fourteen years of existence, but did place five players on the 2008 All Western State Conference teams.
Freshman Mid-Fielder Heather Pastorius (Templeton HS) was the lone Cougar named to the 2008 All Western State Conference First Team. Pastorius scored only five points on the year, but it was her control at midfield and her ability to play both sides of the pitch that made her incredibly valuable to the Cougars. She scored one goal and had three assists.
Freshmen Kaytlyn Johnson (Vacaville) and Corrine Story (Paso Robles HS) were both named to the 2008 All Western State Conference Second Team. Johnson was the Cougars leading scorer with 28 points. She scored 13 goals, only three of the school record, despite waiting until the third game to score her first goal. Story roamed from mid-field to defense and added a goal and assists once she got on the offensive side of the field.
Sophomore Goaltender Madi Urtusaustegui (Coasta Mesa) and Halfback Ashley McLachlan (Torrance HS) both earned 2008 All Western State Conference Honorable Mention. Urtusaustegui posted 121 saves on the year and ended her career ranked fourth on Cuesta's all time list with 200 saves. McLachlan had a goal and two assists for the Cougars.

SOFTBALL-

Cuesta Softball Lands Six on All WSC Teams

SAN LUIS OBISPO (April 28, 2009)— Cuesta landed six players on the 2009 All Western State Conference teams; including first team selection Alex Ramirez (Paso Robles: Cornerstone). The Cougars missed the playoffs this season, for the first time this decade, after finishing in third place and one game out of second place and an automatic playoff berth. The Cougars overall record of 24-20 left them on the playoff bubble, but they were unable to continue their post-season streak.
Freshman Centerfielder Alex Ramirez (Paso Robles: Cornerstone) is the only member of the Cuesta softball team to be named to the 2009 All-WSC First Team. She was the catalyst for the Cuesta offense and a leader in the outfield. She led the team with a .384 batting average and her team-high 18 walks contributed to her team-leading .459 on-base percentage. Once on base Ramirez was always a threat to score. She stole 26 bases, second all time at Cuesta, and scored a team-high 30 times.
The Cougars placed three players on the 2009 All-WSC Second Team led by former first team selection Lauren Vancil (Oceanside). Vancil made a big move to her left this year and took over at shortstop for the Cougars. She was a first team pick at third base as a freshman, but the position change landed her on the second team. She led the Cougars with 36 RBI this year and hit .377, second on the team. Her career batting average of .375 ranks second all time at Cuesta, as does her career totals of 104 hits and 61 RBI. Pitcher Stacie Salazar (Paso Robles HS) and Outfielder Drew Woods (Turlock HS) joined Vancil on the second team. Salazar led the Cougars with 14 wins and an ERA of 2.38. She also authored six compete game shutouts and stuckout 186 batters, both numbers rank among the best all time at Cuesta. Woods bridged the gap between Ramirez and Vancil in the Cougars line-up as their number two hitter. She hit .321 on the year, but was alsovery effective at setting the table for the Cougars offense. Woods was second to Ramirez in both runs (29) and stolen bases (14) and also second to Vancil in sacrifice hits (7).
Pitcher/Outfielder Chelsie Rodriguez (Arroyo Grande HS) and Third Baseman Alyssa Giordanengo (Pismo Beach: Arroyo Grande HS) were both accorded 2009 All-WSC Honorable Mention. Rodriguez was the Cougars clean-up hitter and batted .357 on the season, while also starting 22 of the Cougars 44 games in the pitching circle and posting a 2.40 ERA. She ended her career as the Cougars' all time leader in doubles (23) and third all time with 100 hits off her .333 batting average. Rodriguez is also ranked fifth all time among pitchers with a 2.15 career ERA. Girodanengo also hit .357 and batting behind Rodriguez. She also took over third base this season, allowing Vancil to make the transition to shortstop. The duo formed one of the top defensive leftsides in the state.

Cuesta Softball Ends Season in Third Place
SAN LUIS OBISPO (April 20, 2009)- Last week: The Cuesta softball team ended the 2009 campaign in third place in the Western State Conference, one game behind Ventura and one of the loop's two automatic playoff berths. The Cougars will miss the post-season for the first time since 2000, when the WSC's divisions were restructured. The Cougars won their last six Western State Conference games, including Chelsie Rodriguez's (Arroyo Grande HS) 5-2 season ending win at LA Pierce- the Cougars only contest last week. They ended the year with a 16-8 record against the loop and a 24-20 overall mark. The Cougars have won at least 20 games in each of the last 11 seasons.
This Week: No contests, season is over.
Notes: Freshman Centerfielder Alex Ramirez (Paso Robles: Cornerstone) stole two bases in the Cougars final game of the year against Pierce to bring her team-leading season total to 26. Ramirez's 26 thefts rank #2 all time at Cuesta behind Erika Campbell, who stole 30 bases in 2004. Campbell also holds the Cougars career mark with 41 stolen bases and Ramirez will have a shot at that mark as a sophomore. Ramirez, the Cougars' leadoff batter, also led the team in batting (.384) and runs scored (30).
SWIMMING-
Two Cuesta Swimmers Earn All American Honors
SAN LUIS OBISPO (May 26, 2009)— The Cuesta College Women’s Swimming and Diving teams placed two athletes on the National Community College All American list. The Cuesta swim team has had its share of stars over the years; the men’s program boasts 92 All Americans and ten State Champions, while the women have had 98 All Americans and 12 State Champions.
Sophomore Heather Shaug (King City HS) made her second appearance on the All American list. She earned All American status in three individual events this year, after earning All American in four events in 2008. Napoli and Redman Net WSC Tennis Honors

SAN LUIS OBISPO (May 18, 2009)— The Western State Conference Women’s Tennis Coaches held their post-season meeting last week and the Cougars collected the bulk of the accolades. Five of the six starting singles players were selected to the 2009 Western State Conference First Team, including repeat WSC Player of the Year Chloe Redman (Morro Bay HS), were from Cuesta’s roster. The Cougars also added two of their three doubles teams to the first squad and added a doubles pair on the 2009 All-WSC Honorable Mention selections. Coach Mike Napoli led the powerful Cuesta team to an undefeated 2009 Western State Conference title and was named 2009 WSC Coach of the Year for the 8th time in his 22-year career.
Cuesta #1 Singles Player Chloe Redman (Morro Bay HS) is only the second Cuesta player to twice be named WSC Player of the Year, joining Assistant Coach Jessie Ritchie who completed the feat in 2004 and 2005. Redman posted a 21-5 record as a singles player and advanced to the State Tournament, where she fell in the semi-finals. In doubles she and partner Erin McGurty (Atascadero HS) advanced to the quarterfinals in the State Meet. Redman, who earned All American honors in singles in 2008, became the first Cuesta player to earn All American in both singles and doubles. Her 42 career singles wins tie for the second most in school history. In doubles Redman teamed with Whitney Whiting (Santa Cruz) during the regular season and was named to the 2009 WSC First Team, although she teamed with McGurty in the post-season. She was a combined with 16-5 overall in doubles this season.
#2 Singles Player Erin McGurty (Atascadero HS) followed Redman to the 2009 All-WSC First Team. McGurty began the season at #3 singles, but moved up when an injury knocked 2008 All-WSC First Teamer Devin Merigold (Irvine) from the line-up. McGurty was 6-0 at #2 and 17-3 overall in singles play. She earned All American status in doubles with Redman, but was named to the 2009 All-WSC First Team with partner Hannah Crampton (Arroyo Grande HS). She began the season paired with Merigold, but joined Crampton after she went down. Overall McGurty was 13-6 in doubles play.
#3 Singles Player Whitney Whiting (Fresno) had also selected to the 2008 All-WSC First Singles Team as a #4 player last season and began her sophomore campaign with an 8-0 mark at that position. She moved to #3 spot filling the vacancy caused by Merigold’s injury and was named to the All-WSC First Team again after posting an overall singles mark of 13-3. Her 29-5 career mark lands her in third place on Cuesta’s all time winning percentage list (85.3%) and 8th on the all time win list. She also earned 2009 All-WSC First Team Doubles honors with Redman, but did not join her for the post-season. She was 13-5 in doubles play this season.
#4 Singles Player Hannah Crampton (Arroyo Grande HS) also made her second appearance on the All-WSC First Team. Crampton won her first 11 singles matches this season, but struggled with four straight losses to end the season. She also joined McGurty on the 2009 All-WSC First Team Doubles. She was 11-5 in doubles play this season.
#5 Singles Player Laura Haines (Ventura HS) was the only freshman from Cuesta’s team to be named to the 2009 All-WSC First Team. She did not begin the season in the starting line-up, but earned a spot at #6 for the Cougars’ third WSC match. She was a perfect 8-0 at that position before closing out the WSC schedule with a 3-0 mark at #5. She was 13-1 on the season and was at her best in the post-season, where she lost only won game in four playoff sets. She and teammate Bre Rowan (SLO HS) were selected to the 2009 All WSC Honorable Mention squad in doubles. The duo only played three matches together, but Haines was 6-6 in with four doubles partners this season.
Cuesta College Head Coach Mike Napoli was named the 2009 Western State Conference Coach of the Year after leading his Cougars to a perfect 11-0 record on the way to the 2009 WSC Title. Napoli is 270-96-1 in 22 seasons at Cuesta and was also selected the ITA National Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2008. VOLLEYBALL-
Cuesta Spikers End Season on Low Note
SAN LUIS OBISPO (November 24, 2008)- Last Week: The Cuesta Women's Volleyball team finished up their season with a loss at home to Santa Barbara. The Cougars fell behind in Game 1, 17-12, but caught Santa Barbara at 21-21. The Cougars served three times to win the game (24-23, 25-24, 26-25) before losing 28-26. The Cougars were not down after the loss and came out strong in Game 2 forcing Santa Barbara to burn its time outs at 15-13 and then 18-13. The second time out worked and the Vaqueros evened the game at 20-20. Santa Barbara then scored five of the last six points of the game to take a control of the match with a 2-0 lead. In Game 3 the two teams traded the first 18 points until a mini-run by the Vaqueros gave them a 12-9 lead and Cuesta tried to regroup with a time out. The Vaqueros didn't slow after the break and raced to win Game 3 and the match 24-14. The Cougars are now 12-11 overall and their 5-5 record in the Western State Conference landed them in third place.
This week: No Contests, season over.
Notes: Sophomore Outside Hitter Sara Kidd (Taft HS) had two service aces in the Cougars loss to Santa Barbara last Tuesday, which lifted her season total to 42. Kidd's total tied the school record set in 2004 by Kati Purchase. Kidd's 44 career aces rank 8th all time at Cuesta.

Cuesta Men's Polo Lands 8 on All WSC Teams

SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 3, 2008)— The Cuesta Men's Water Polo team finished in second place in the Western State Conference and failed to win its fifth consecutive Western State Conference title, but still managed to reach the post-season for the 30th straight season. The 2008 Cougars finished the season with an 18-14 record and was upset in the first round of the playoffs by Saddleback. These accomplishments were recognized at the post-season meetings, where the Cougars landed eight players on the 2008 All Western State Conference teams.
Four members of the Cuesta water polo team were named to the 2008 All Western State Conference First Team led by freshman Two-Meter Player Hunter Hamaker (Buellton: Santa Ynez HS). Hamaker was also named to the 2008 All Southern California Second Team and garnered All American honors. He led the Cougars with 88 goals on the season. Hamaker also scored nine of those goals on October 18th as he led the Cougars past Riverside. His goal total was the highest by a Cuesta player in decade.
Sophomores Blake Richesin (Clovis) and Eric Cavanaugh (Fresno) and freshmen Jake Akins (Lemoore HS) were also named to the 2008 All Western State Conference First Team. Richesin was the Cougars second leading scorer and developed into one of the most dangerous outside shooters in the State. Richesin emerged this season after spending his first season as a reserve. He also earned 2008 All Southern California Honorable Mention. Cavanaugh is a two-year starter and had been named to the 2007 All-WSC Second Team his first year. He is the Cougars primary defender and also added 26 goals on offense. Akins is the Cougars sprinter and used his speed to add 31 goals to the Cougars offense.
The Cougars also placed three players on the 2008 All-WSC Second Team. Drivers Alex Reyna (Lompoc: Cabrillo HS) and PJ Perez (Santa Ynez HS) were joined on the unit by Guard Karl Weit (Atascadero HS). Reyna moved into the starting rotation after being buried on the bench as a freshman reserve in 2007. He scored 7 goals this season, while his freshman counterpart, Perez, added 22 goals. Weit scored only four goals on the season, but was an adept playmaker and good defender that helped set up his teammates.
Freshman Goaltender Thomas Martin (Santa Maria HS) earned 2008 All-WSC Honorable Mention. He played every second of the year in the goal and recorded 244 saves.

Cuesta Women's Polo Lands 8 on All WSC Teams
Thompson Named Co-Player of the Year

SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 2, 2008)— The Cuesta Women's Water Polo team finished third in the Western State Conference after knocking off previously ranked LA Valley at the WSC Championships. The Cougars suffered through the program's first losing season with a 13-21 record, but improved all season long after losing eight of their first ten games. The Cougars had won the previous two WSC titles, but by the seasons end the squad had earned the respect of the rest of the State. Their accomplishments were recognized at the post-season meetings, where the Cougars landed eight players on the 2008 All Western State Conference teams; including WSC Co-Player of the Year Morgan Thompson (Paso Robles HS) as well as, three other 2008 All Western State Conference First Team and four other all conference selections.
Freshman Morgan Thompson (Paso Robles HS) shared the 2008 Western State Conference Player of the Year honors with Citrus' Crystal Fabela and Ventura's Bonny Bordwell. Thompson ended the season ranked 4th in the State in scoring with a Cuesta record 95 goals. The WSC was home to three of the State's top five scorers, including Fabela, and that fact and 11 goals on the Cougars final weekend encouraged the loop's skippers to elevate her with the rest of the trio. Thompson also added 16 assists and 35 steals to the Cougars cause.
Sophomores Tammy Barksdale (Atascadero HS) and Meagan Bebb (Victorville) were joined on the 2008 All Western State Conference First Team by freshman Erin Gray (Atascadero HS). Barksdale, who was voted Team MVP, made her second appearance on the all-WSC 1st team after earning a spot on the squad as a freshman. Her all around game was a key to the Cougars success this season. She led the team with 40 assists (2nd best ever at Cuesta) and 34 ejections drawn, while placing second on the team with 47 goals and 49 steals. Bebb, the Team Captain, was a stellar help defender for the Cougars and led the team with 88 steals. The 2007 all-WSC 2nd Teamer season started the season slowly and needed six games to score her first goal of the year, but Bebb ended the season with 43 goals and a team-high 43.9% shooting percentage. She also added 32 ejections drawn and 18 assists. Gray was the Cougars leader on the power-play and added 23 goals and 17 assists to the Cougars season.
The Cougars also placed two players on the 2007 All-WSC Second Team. Goalie Mallorie Green (Arroyo Grande HS) and Driver Krystine Sargent (Modesto). Green posted 284 saves and added 23 assists as she helped turn her saves into possible goals with her passing on the counter attack. Sargent scored 10 goals and added 10 assists and 30 steals, despite missing six games and playing limited minutes in eight others because of a wrist injury.
Freshmen Aubree McAtee (Roseville) and Kat Shellooe (Atascadero HS) both earned 2008 All-WSC Honorable Mention. McAtee became a starter in the third week of the season. She is regarded as one of the Cougars top defenders and also added four goals and 17 steals. Shellooe was the Cougars top player off the bench. She added a spark with her speed and ability to fastbreak. She scored 11 goals for the Cougars and drew 22 kickouts.
