WOMEN'S SOCCER-
Soccer Splits First Week, Continues Homestand this Week
SAN LUIS OBISPO (September 2, 2008)- Last week: The Cuesta Women’s
Soccer team opened its season at home with a pair of games last Thursday and Friday. The Cougars opened the season with a narrow 2-1 victory over Citrus on Thursday, but lost by the same margin to Taft on Friday. The Cougars are 1-1-0 on the season.
This Week: The Cougars will play three more home games this week, beginning on Tuesday with West Hills. The Cougars will face the Falcons at 4 PM. On Friday and Saturday the Cougars will host Evergreen, Diablo Valley and Saddleback Colleges. The Cougars will face Diablo Valley at 4 PM on Friday, while at the same time Saddleback will play Evergreen on Cuesta’s upper field. On Saturday the Cougars will face Evergreen at 11 AM, while Saddleback faces Diablo Valley at the same time.
Notes: 2007 All-WSC First Team selection Esther Neel (Santa Cruz) scored two goals, including the game winner, to lead the Cougars to victory in their 2008 season opener. Neel scored only four goals last year, but was second on the team with 11 points. Coach Bob Wilson expects her to get more scoring opportunities this season. |
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL-
Cuesta Drops Opener to Porterville- Plays in San Diego this Week
SAN LUIS OBISPO (September 2, 2008)- Last week: The Cuesta Women’s
Volleyball team opened its season with tremendous promise, but little team chemistry, in a five-game loss to the visiting Porterville Pirates. The Cougars were only halfway through their second week of school and were still learning the Cuesta system and the names of their teammates, especially since the 2008 team has only two players back from 2007. The Cougars did have moments and served for the match three times in Game 5, but the Pirates steadier play allowed them to pull out a 19-17 victory in Game 5 to win the match 3-2, despite inferior individual statistics.
This Week: The Cougars will travel for two games in San Diego. The Cougars will play Southwestern College on Friday (6 PM) and Grossmont College on Saturday (Noon).
Notes: The Cougars enjoyed a 20-kill game from Northern Arizona transfer Cory Hunter (Springville), however the former Porterville High star could not lead the Cougars past her hometown college. Hunter was one of three Cougars to record double digit kills- Stacey Taylor (Santa Rosa) 13 and Sara Kidd (Taft HS) 11- yet the Pirates' Olga Velasquez (New Mexico) led her team to victory with a mere 12 kills. Cuesta also received stellar play from their as good as advertised middle blockers, Heather Shaug (King City HS) and Kayla Cribbs (Sutter Creek), who combined for 15 total blocks; Velasquez led the Pirates with four blocks.

Cuesta Women Poloist Open at Home this Thursday
SAN LUIS OBISPO (September 3, 2008)— The Cuesta College Women’s Water Polo team is ready for its tenth season with a diverse group of young players. The Cougars have six sophomores and eight freshmen on this year’s team, however three of the sophomores are returning from 2005. The Cougars have won the past two Western State Conference titles and with their mixture of experienced veterans and talented newcomers they plan to make a run at their third consecutive title. Coach Pete Schuler (175-95-3/ 10th year) says, “This team has been working hard to get everyone on the same page. We are moving forward and have a chance to be contenders this season.” The Cougars lost five starters from last year’s team, but still have enough experience to field a contending line up. Coach Schuler says, “The great thing about our sophomores, is that they have been very willing to help the freshmen become acquainted with collegiate level water polo. They have been very positive and unselfish”
The Cougars will hit the pool this Thursday (5 PM) when they host 2007 playoff qualifier Modesto College. Both teams will play in the Central Coast Tournament on Friday and Saturday, which also includes Cerritos College, who knocked Cuesta out of the playoffs last year |
