Cuesta College students who are called to report for duty in support of our country's military activities are asked to contact the Veteran's Office on the San Luis Obispo Campus, Student Services Office on the North County Campus, and the Student Services Office at the Arroyo Grande Center.  We have important information for you.

Veteran Information

Cuesta College is approved for the training of veterans under the various public laws of the United States and the California Veterans Program.

Any student who plans to enroll under a federal or state program should contact the Cuesta College Veterans Office, which will supply all necessary forms and information.

Students who are children or widows of veterans who died as a result of military service, or who are dependents of veterans who are totally disabled as a result of such service or peace time military service since September 16, 1940, may be eligible for assistance from the Veterans Administration or the State of California. Satisfactory scholarship and attendance are required for all students receiving benefits from any federal or state agency.

Rules and regulations pertaining to veterans' training are subject to change at any time. Veterans are advised to check with the Veterans Office at Cuesta College to receive a copy of the latest requirements, rules and regulations. It is the veteran's responsibility to inform the Veterans Office of any changes to his or her schedule and program.

Veteran Benefits

Students might receive benefits:

  • If he or she is a dependent of a veteran?

  • If a veteran, did they pay their $1,200 for their education benefits? The California National Guard are eligible for benefits, if currently active and have a six (6) year contract. The different chapters are 30, 31, 32, 35, and 1606 (106).

How do I apply for my benefits?      Return to top

If the student has never applied for benefits under Chapters 30, 1606 (106) or 32,  the student must complete the Application for Education Benefits Form 22-1990.

A student who has been receiving benefits under Chapters 30, 1606 (106) or 32, will fill out form 22-1995, which will transfer their benefits to Cuesta College. Official transcripts from previous college(s) MUST be forward to Cuesta College.

All students must declare a Major and have a Student Educational Plan (SEP) on file in the Veterans Office. The SEP can be completed through the Counseling Office. Please make a counseling appointment by calling 805-546-3138 between 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday. The student must bring a copy of the SEP to the Veterans Office to receive benefits.

Forms are available in the Veterans Office, which is located on the lower floor of the Library Building in Room 3130 - Student Service Center.

The toll-free number and their WEB site provides:

  • Information on VA education benefits

  • Ability to ask questions or send an inquiry.

  • Obtain information on your own benefit account if you receive

  • Speak with an Education Case Manager, Monday - Friday during normal business hours.

The student must apply for these benefits through the Veterans Office at Cuesta College. It is recommended that the student apply before they register for school.

Chapter 31 - Vocational Rehabilitation

The student must apply for benefits through the Los Angeles office. Call (310) 235-7722, to make an appointment with the representative in Los Angeles to apply for this benefit.

Chapter 35 - Dependent

This is for a dependent of a 100% disabled / deceased veteran, service connected only. The dependent must complete Form 22-5490. If they are transfer students, they complete Form 22-5495. Official transcripts from previous college(s) MUST be forward to Cuesta College.

Restored Entitlement Program for Surviving (REPS)     Return to top

This program is for the child/children of a deceased veteran, who are under the age of 22. The veteran must have died on active duty before August 13, 1981.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive the benefits?

  • Normally it takes 8 weeks; however, it can take up to 2-3 months to receive clearance from the Department of Defense.

How do I receive an advance check?

  • The student must sign up for an advance check at least 30 working days before the first day of school.

  • Please confirm with the Veteran Representative whether you are eligible to receive an advance check.
