SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Agriculture Technology Program with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo

The Agricultural Technology program is a cooperative educational program between Cuesta College and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The program enables qualified Cuesta students to enroll in specified Cal Poly courses in the College of Agriculture while concurrently attending Cuesta College. Students enrolled in this program may earn an Associate of Science degree in any of eight majors: animal science, crop science, dairy product technology, dairy science/dairy production, fruit science, environmental horticulture design (floral design concentration), environmental horticultural design (landscape horticulture concentration), environmental horticulture (plant production concentration), or fruit science.

Agricultural technology students complete general education and elective course work at Cuesta College and major courses within the College of Agriculture at Cal Poly. Fees are paid to each institution for every term and grades are posted to the student's transcript at the institution where the course was completed. Upon completion of the required course work, Cuesta College grants Associate of Science degrees to students in the program.

Students who have been academically disqualified from the College of Agriculture at Cal Poly are not eligible to participate in the Agricultural Technology program until all conditions for readmission to Cal Poly have been met.

Interested students should contact the Cuesta College Admissions Office at (805) 546-3140 or the Cuesta Transfer/Career Services vocational counselor at (805) 546-3162.

Exceptions or appeals shall be directed to the Dean's Office, College of Agriculture at Cal Poly (805) 756-2161.

Cuesta College may admit minors currently enrolled in grades K-12, who in the opinion of their school principal, would benefit from concurrent enrollment in advanced scholastic or vocational coursework at Cuesta College. Students must complete both the high school approval process and Cuestas Enrichment admission process to qualify to register in degree applicable courses at Cuesta.

Enrichment Admission Process begins:

April 1 for summer and fall terms

October 1 for the spring term

San Luis Obispo Campus Student Support will relocate from behind the cafeteria to the renovated library during the Spring 2007.

Enrichment students, who will be concurrently enrolled in grades K-12 and Cuesta College, are not considered continuing students and must submit an admission application and Permit to Enroll form each term until they receive their high school diploma, or equivalent. The Permit to Enroll must have specific courses identified as beneficial to the student and approved by the school principal along with the signed consent of the parents.  Students that are home-schooled must attach a Private School Affidavit.  If privately tutored, a copy of the tutors teaching credential should be attached with a Permit to Enroll.

  • Grades K-8 Part-Time:  Students must submit academic records from the previous two years and make an appointment to meet with the Director of Admissions and Records (805-546-3130) or the Executive Dean of the North County Campus (805-591-6220). All K-12 students are limited to a maximum of 11 units in fall/spring semester and four units in summer session and may not be approved for Physical Education courses.  Enrichment students in grades K-8 enrolling as a part-time student must complete a Permit-to Enroll in addition to an admission application before they may register for classes.
  • Grades 9-12 Part-Time:  Students are limited to a maximum of 11 units in fall/spring semester and four units in summer session and may not be approved for Physical Education courses.  Enrichment students in grades 9-12 enrolling as a part-time student must complete a Permit-to Enroll in addition to an admission application before they may register for classes.
  • Grades K-12 Full-Time:  Students may enroll in up to 19 units in fall/spring semester and nine units in summer session. An approved letter from the governing board of the school district in which the student is enrolled authorizing full-time attendance at Cuesta College must be obtained in addition to a Permit to Enroll and admission application before they may register for classes.

Be sure to list course department and number (i.e. ENGL 1A) and list alternative course selections in case first-choice courses are unavailable
or if assessment test results place the student in a different level of English or math.

Obtain Authorized Signatures
The Permit to Enroll form requires a combination of signature approvals including the student,
parent and/or guardian, and high school principal. All signatures are required.

Schedule an Orientation
The high school counselor can advise the student when an Enrichment Orientation at their school
is scheduled in spring or fall. Students may also complete Cuestas admission application and

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS:

Family Education Rights & Privacy Act of 1974
All college coursework is governed by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act which allows release of academic information, including class schedules, grades, and transcripts, to the student only. Cuesta College academic information is not released to parents or third parties without the written consent of the student. Upon consent by the student, information is only released to the authorized party (may be required to provide identification) in-person and in-writing. This law applies to all students attending Cuesta College, regardless if the student is under 18 years of age

Information for Parents, Students, and Principal
By entering a college environment, students who are minors will be exposed to a diverse population in educational programs designed for the adult learner that may involve sensitive topics that might be considered controversial or offensive in the secondary setting. Students also have open access to the Internet on campus computers and access to family planning (pregnancy testing, HIV testing, condoms) in the Health Center.

If a class does not meet at its scheduled time (i.e. cancelled class or ends early), Cuesta College does not inform parents or guardians nor will staff or the instructor assume responsibility for students once a class is released.

A:
11 units in fall and spring semesters; 4 units in summer session are considered less than full-time
attendance.

Q: Can I petition to enroll beyond the maximum units?
A:
A student may petition for full-time attendance at Cuesta College by obtaining a letter of release from his or her governing school district with an approved Full-Time Admit Permit to Enroll form. Full-time Enrichment students are not granted an enrollment fee waiver, but may be eligible to have the enrollment  fee waived through the Community College Board of Governors Fee Waiver Program (BOGW) if they and their families qualify. The BOGW can only be used for college course credit, not for high school credit.

Q: Is financial aid available for part-time Enrichment students?
A:
No. Federal financial aid cannot be made available until an individual has obtained a high school diploma, a GED or taken the Ability to Benefit test administered by Cuesta Colleges assessment services.

Q: What restrictions exist for summer school attendance?
A:
The 5% restriction has been removed for summer 2007. However, the principal of a school may only recommend Cuesta courses that have been approved for general education breadth for the UC (IGETC) and CSU; courses that meet career-technical education degree/certificate requirements; and courses necessary to help students pass the California High School Exit Exam.

Q: How do I know if a Cuesta course will transfer to a 4-year university?
A:
Cuesta identifies courses that are transferable to the CSU and UC system at the end of each course description in the schedule of classes. In addition, a list of transferable courses to the CSU and UC systems can be found at www.assist.org.

Q: Will my Cuesta class count for both high school and college credit?
A:
Yes, if the course is Cuesta degree applicable and/or transferable to the CSU or UC system it will provide college credit. Please check with your high school counselor for the amount of high school credit you will receive.

Q: How does the Cuesta transcript get to my high school or to my future colleges or universities?
A:
The student must submit a written or online request to Cuesta for the transcript to be released (sent) to the high school and/or university. The students signature is required to release the transcript. The first two copies are free (except online request).
