   SAMPLE LETTER

ACADEMIC (GPA) OR PROGRESS (UNITS COMPLETED) PROBATION STATUS

This letter is to advise you that you have been placed on academic or progress probation as of the end of the spring or fall semester. This placement is in accordance with the Cuesta College Academic Probation and Dismissal Policy or the Progress Probation and Dismissal Policy, depending upon your particular situation. You are not subject to dismissal; and, therefore, the college will take no further action at this time.

You can determine your probationary status (academic or progress probation) by reviewing your semester grades. Grades can be obtained by (1) looking them up on the myCuesta Student Portal, or (2) requesting them from the Admissions and Records Office with a photo ID.

Following are brief definitions of these two policies. Please see the Cuesta College Catalog or the Cuesta College web site at www.cuesta.edu, for the complete description.

PROGRESS PROBATION: A student is placed on progress probation if entries of "W," "I," and "NC" or "NP" reach or exceed 50 percent of all units in which the student has enrolled. (Three consecutive semesters on progress probation result in dismissal from college.) A student may have excellent grades, but still be on progress probation due to the number of units that were enrolled but not completed.

ACADEMIC PROBATION: A student is placed on academic probation if the student earns less than a 2.00 grade point average for one semester. (A student is subject to dismissal from the college if the student earns less than a 2.00 GPA for two consecutive semesters.)

As mentioned previously, the college will take no further action at this time. However, it is my sincere desire to assist you in reaching your educational goal. Some areas of assistance I would like you to consider are:

  • Counseling Services for assistance in developing a plan to improve your academic standing

  • The Tutorial Center located in the High Tech Center, room 3300

  • Office hours instructors make available for consultation

  • Academic Skills classes ( Cuesta College courses designed to improve basic skills)

  • The Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Office if you have a learning or physical disability

I strongly recommend that you utilize these resources as soon as possible to develop a corrective plan of action.
